If so, I nominate this

Not that there's anything really wrong with the current one. But it's getting old. Which is funny, because it's supposed to be new. I think Nintendo has used up the current art style, it's gone from DS quality to Wii quality to 3ds quality to HD!
Alternately, that van gogh level was good. I would love to play a mario game based on this kind of painting!

the first image would do great for a NEW Super Mario All-Stars release, imo. What do you think?

P.S. I've only played the DS and wii versions. Watched videos of New Super Mario Bros U and saw screenshots.

The New Super Mario Bros. art-style is pretty much the conventional style for the series - one look at it, and you know it's traditional Mario. I doubt it's going to see itself change anytime soon, especially not with no new game in the series due anytime soon.

NSMB needs to stop existing.
Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario world are generally considered the best games of the series.
Nintendo aren't going to repeat that success by releasing the same game over and over again.

I make Pixel Art on occasion, and sometimes sell them as Game Assets.

To the first sentence: It's a cash cow, it sells well. But Nintendo needs to reinvigorate this.
To the second sentence: I agree, and I'd like to toss in Yoshi's Island as well.
To the third sentence: That depends on what way you mean this. Clearly, they're making oodles of money. There's always a new mario kart, a new mario party, etc. On the other hand, the artstyle and music never 'clicked' with me. I've only played the DS and Wii versions, not the two newer ones, but from what I've been reading it seems that the newer two are superior to the former two, but the artstyle and music drag it down, with people just being tired of both. There's clearly a reason people will get the new mario versions of something previously released, but not want the 2d platformer. Could be wrong about the 3ds. You aren't changing my mind on the Wii U, I've seen videos of the game and the levels (well at least the castles) look good.

I think you should get the Wii U, totally, I've tried it in London and it is AMAZING! NSMBU is beautiful and feels really new, the levels feel really nice and the graphics for most levels are 9/10!

Well if Nintendo hold true with their one New Super Mario Bros. game per system thing then I'm not going to spend too much time worrying about a game that's not going to exist until the 3DS successor.
Just hurry up and give me an epic 3D Mario game for the Wii U.

I think after this last Installment Nintendo will reinvent something else... I'm not saying it will be totalling different but enough of a difference to warrent a different look and feel from this current series...

I'm hoping for another SMB2 or yoshi's island remake..... sounds like a good time to explore this... would be a safe bet IMO.

@arrmixer I hope you are correct on that. I love Mario, and I love 2D Mario, but I'm really in the mood for a change.

The 2D titles in the past made big changes between each one (physics, art style, level design, gameplay, etc.). That being said, that still happens with 3D titles, those old 2D titles were often quite far apart, and now we're getting MORE Mario (3D and 2D and Paper/RPG). With that much Mario, I suppose I shouldn't expect too many changes in the 2D realm ... hence the dilemma of NSMB: I love 2D Mario and want to keep getting 2D Mario, but I really would love some more innovation and change in the 2D titles, but, then again, I also don't want it to consume all resources away from 3D Mario titles.

BTW, Does anyone else think the physics in the NSMB series are not as desirable as those in some of the older 2D titles? Perhaps a bit ... I don't know ... 'floaty' ...

I would like to see the wondrous return of pixel art. Timeless and classic and something of a lost art in today's mainstream console releases. The Iwata asks (i think that's where I read it) for kirby mass attack was quite interesting in how it explored the place of pixel art. So yes, more of that please.

New Super Mario Bros has a certain visual aesthetic but my god the music is hideous!

arrmixer

@mookysam yeah the music does suck.. it sounds better on the gamepad then on a TV.... hey maybe nintendo will make a 8bit DLC! that would be kool....
@EJtheK agreed with the floaty jumps.. I had to get used to the squirel suit a bit too... but either way I'm happy with the game nonetheless...

@arrmixer Thanks for the agreement! I'm glad I'm not alone.

I too am very happy with the game overall.

@arrmixer No, no, no. Not 8-bit pixel art. HD pixel art. Kinda like Wario Land shake it. NSMB should've been pixel art in the first place in my opinion. But I'm not going to complain that it's not.

Anyway, I like the NSMB games. I've been waiting since Super Mario World for there to be a new Super Mario Bros. game and so now I'm happy that the series has returned. Of course, I wish people didn't complain about it so much...

And, like @BenAV said, Nintendo is only planning on doing one NSMB per console, so there's even less reason to complain. You're still going to get your 3D Mario adventures. There's no need to cry about the NSMB series. That's like complaining that Mario Kart is coming out instead of a new Super Mario game. It's just another side series. Just because it's not the one you're into the most doesn't mean you need to complain. There are plenty of people that do genuinely enjoy the series.

I want a super-realistic Mario game. Closer to the Smash Bros. Brawl stage as was posted originally. A gritty and highly detailed HD Mario game would be neat. Though I can't imagine Nintendo doing anything of the sort. They don't exactly like to stray too much from the family-friendly image.

MrWalkieTalkie

People keep saying they want a new art style to Mario, but whenever a company like Nintendo does change a game series' appearance, people complain saying they shouldnt have changed it, that its not as good as it used to look, just look at how people complained about Wind Waker and how it looked yet now people are complaining that there isnt any new Zelda game with the Wind Waker look. What do you people want!?

Exactly @MrWalkieTalkie, when Nintendo does something new, (Wind Waker, Sunshine, Sticker Star, Luigi's Mansion) people go beserk why it isn't the same as the old games. And yet people always complain the NSMB series is the same.
Some fans just dont know what they want.
