Exactly @MrWalkieTalkie, when Nintendo does something new, (Wind Waker, Sunshine, Sticker Star, Luigi's Mansion) people go beserk why it isn't the same as the old games. And yet people always complain the NSMB series is the same.
Some fans just dont know what they want.

This. Most fanbases in general will ask for something that they'd just complain about if it happened. I welcome anything that's just fun to play because of it's, y'know, a video game and that's partly the whole point of them. You're only ruining your own fun times by comparing new stuff to old stuff. "But back in the day, we had this and that and..." I DON'T CARE! That was back then, this is now.

Not to mention that if they want to play their old games, they could either purchase them on the Virtual Console or hard copies otherwise

Exactly, I mean look, I liked SMB1,2,3 & Super Mario World because they were fun to play.
I like the NSMB series too (a little samey but if it ain't broke...), wanna know why? 'cause it was fun to play.

Moaning that the newer games don't have something that the retro games do at this point, is like going to a new bakery store, buying a cake and saying "Hey! The old bakery next door does these better!" in front of the store owner. Why? Just go to the old bakery and buy theirs so you can enjoy it.

Wait, some people actually understand that games are about having fun?

It would be better if the series had a new art style every game, like the Legend of Zelda.

Eh, I'm done with the series, I just got the 3DS version because it seemed more interesting and it seemed better off on a handheld. But until they change things up (and get rid of the freakin' "bah!" music), no more "New" Mario for me.

It's official, Megumi is now in love with crimsontadpoles and no one else....I mean, she still loves me and she's still one of my top waifus, but-...you know what just shut up.

Wouldn't saying that NSMB needs a new art style be the same as saying all mario games need a new art style? The NSMB games has more or less the same art style as th 3D ones, just in 2D of course.

I don't care much for the style. It's pretty soulless, but it works and characters are easy to distinguish from the backgrounds etc. I always feel as if I know exactly where I am in the NSMB games, which I like.

They can keep the current style IMO.

Looking forward to: ZeldaU & Hyrule Warriors

I'm in the group that appreciates a new look on titles. I loved Super Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion, Metroid: Other M, etc;
I'm not too keen on samey titles. Mario Galaxy 2 is a fantastic game and the NSMB titles are still good platforming, but the lack of change does start to show through.
Those who complain about both fresh and old outlooks can suck it.

Anyways, the 2.5D look is what pretty much defines NSMB titles. I do think a new art style would be nice, but then it wouldn't really fit with the series (or subseries I guess).

@LZBirdboi
I would play that! I'd love for Nintendo to experiment with more diverse graphic styles. It keeps things fresh, as long as the gameplay is still AAA quality.

Unlike the Mario franchise, the Zelda franchise is just one series on its own. Therefore, a befitting deviation in art-style is welcome every now and then, especially seeing as it doesn't alter the tradition of game.

However, the Mario franchise has a range of series (and spin-offs) - New Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Galaxy, Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi, Yoshi's Island etc. Each game has its own respective art-style that fits with its theme and overall, the variation of visuals in these games all together mean they needn't be changed individually (unlike Zelda). So technically, it does have a new art-style every game, but each series needs to maintain its art-style to avoid clashing outside of its zone.

NSMB was a rebirth of 2D Mario. It's also the pinnacle of Mario Level design. I had a friend over today and we were trying to play through Rayman Origins since Legends launches soon. I said trying because we reached a bunch of levels where it felt like there was something wrong.
The NSMB series doesn't do that. It has perfected the Mario brand level design IMO. Now that they have the best in the franchise as a launch title for the Wii U, I see no reason why they won't reinvent Mario's 2D platformers again, since they wouldn't release NSMBU2.

They wouldn't.
I'm expecting the next 2D Mario to be something new.

@TysonQ7: Replace every word relating to Mario with Call of Duty and send that to Activision, pl0x.

I dunno if CoD really has it perfected though. I'm not into it myself so I can't judge it well, but from what I've heard there is room to improve.
I just dunno if Activision ALREADY knows that and is just slowly upgrading to squeeze more games out, or they just haven't realized it yet.
Going with the former.

Anyways, I really want to see them take the level design of NSMB and put it into a new style.

@TysonQ7: Let's be honest, Activision knows they have the industry in their wallets and they're telling us the same joke over and over, even though it's still not perfect. Conversely, I'd say Halo 4 is one game that I see to have currently perfected both itself and the current standard of the FPS genre as of now (visuals, multiplayer, controls etc.) - in addition to Activision's tedious ways, we need a change of formality for these games now, or it'll all go downhill from here.

We now interrupt this episode of Off-Topic Conversations for a commercial break. We shall return with more conversation on Mario after the advertisement.

I find it funny how Call of Duty is brought up in nearly every topic on this site. "Battlefield on Wii U?" Call of Duty. "Wii U's CPU issue?" Uh oh Call of Duty. "Favorite Mario game?" Call of Duty.

Only on Nintendo Life.

Just for you.

Well, it's one of the most profitable franchises ever, so obviously it'll be prominent, and it's apparently quite jarring in the scores from critics to users (http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/call-of-duty-black-ops-ii).

I'm pretty sure Halo was like that during the original trilogy. It's basically one of the games likely to come up in any discussion when gaming is brought in, alongside Mario or Angry Turds.

Forgive me, Lord Jackson. Never again shall I utter such irreverent blasphemy on the sacred Call of Duty in any location deemed unfit.
