I agree with Sean, the series doesn't offend me too much, and the Wii U version was a solid, fun, colourful and beautiful game to play with lots of content and level variation.

But I also agree with the sentiments that a change is soon needed. What can you do with a 2d Mario game though to change it? I'd certainly like a change in the boss fights. It gets a bit tiresome fighting the same 8 guys at the end of each world.

I'd maybe like to see a 2d Mario go "extreme" and really change the formula for each level. I want giant giant sized enemies, upside down levels, levels going from right to left, top to bottom. Heck, even vary the enemies such as giving the goombas turtle shells and have cheep cheeps popping out the pipes instead of Pirahnas. Of course doing all this would majorly risk alienating a giant fan base.

Would it work if this series of games adopted "realistic" environments such as the castles found in Rayman?

I doubt it alienate anyone to make it more interesting. In fact, I think the sales would probably go up if it did, since a significant amount of people are getting tired of all the repetitiveness (as this thread makes pretty clear).

I love NSMB2 and NSLU made the Wii U version a classic for me. I understand the hate and the "why, why, why, Nintendo,!?" but I say keep em coming! :)

I'll be honest. I wish they would change it up more like the 3D Marios. Heck, 3D Land was much more inspiring than NSMB2...

I remember thinking NSMB was amazing when I got that, and I spent an inordinate amount of time Playing Mario vs. Luigi with my friends, haha! We are probably better at that mode than anyone else in the world, hahaha! :P

...I actually thought NSMB2 was a little bit better than the original, though; but then again I never played the Wii or Wii U games, either... so NSMB2 was actually my second. And I've poured a ton of time into Coin Rush - not only is it one of my favorite modes from a Mario game I've ever played, but it makes brilliant use of StreetPass, which I really appreciate. :)

So... basically your hting the word "new" in the the name? its not like there would be much difference if there was a new mario game with out "new" in it. Such Judgementel, very disapproved.

When are they gonna put this tired series to rest?

I feel obliged to remind you that they only release one game per system (New Super Luigi U was DLC. It doesn't count) so we won't be seeing much (if anything at all) of it anymore.

If we do get another NSMB game, it'll be released in a Post-3D World... well, World. NSMBU was the product of Nintendo thinking they knew what we wanted ("what we wanted" being a solid, albeit on the samey-side, platformer). 3D World is Nintendo after realizing what we actually want (a solid, inspired, even FUN platformer).

With all of that in mind, I personally don't think the next game in the New series (if we get one anytime soon) will be like the last four.

They still have only made one per console so far. It's pretty far away from games which are milked every year.

I think that is even worse! The fact they have released it on the past five consoles and shown very little evolution in the series is sad. Even the graphics are very much the same. The sequel on the 3DS was the closest it was to change and it was not all that good. Or even New Super Luigi U was a decent change with the difficulty spike. But the games are so unchanged across all the platforms that it seems like Nintendo just trying to fill their lineup. On the NES, the lack of change is forgivable. Even then, however, they had plenty of change within those titles. Throwing in a couple suits in each one does very little to make me crave the next entry.

I didn’t really care for New Super Mario Bros. 2 on the 3DS (level design was kinda “ehh”, and the whole coin gimmick was pretty lame IMO), however, I thought New Super Mario Bros. U was a pretty solid, fun little title, it felt fully fleshed out, and worth the money. I think I played through it completely twice, and New Super Luigi U was a decent for what it was………. I don’t mind the series, and if they release one “New Mario Bros.” per a console, I have no problems with that. It sells well.

That being said, I agree with you………..playing Rayman Legends (a superior 2D platformer) showed that the New Super Mario Bros. series is just playing it too safe. I don’t think it’s the best choice for a launch title either. Your core audience are the early adapters, and New Super Mario Bros. dosen’t really fit the bill, considering most people can blow past it in two or three days if they don’t care about the gold coins.

They kinda are "putting it to rest" considering they are not releasing one until a new console is release. @BioMadd :P

They shouldn't be releasing another 2D Mario until the next console, so they have more than enough time to make it and get it right.

The series hasn't been bad for me, and I actually quite like NSMBU. However, I am tiring of the series and wish Nintendo would do something new for 2D Mario next time. From an Iwata Asks about Super Mario 3D World, Miyamoto said that he would like to "design 2D Mario games in an easy-to-understand way within certain restraints." That sounds like New Super Mario Bros. to me, but hopefully I'll be wrong.

I had the original and the wii version was great at the time, real coop multiplayer was fun with my lil bro!
Lost the games now so... The wii u and 3ds versions could replace them when I get one of those consoles.

But I do feel slightly offended that they're so similar to each other.
