Core fans saw the Wii as a betrayal just because games like Wii Sports existed. But I dare argue that the Wii had a diverse first party like the Gamecube.

I mostly believe it as well, I think they realize now that the Wii casual audience is mostly gone for good, as Miyamoto says himself, they have their tablets now. Kyoto tried to market the Wii U at the same demographic, and it was mostly a failure.
I still expect Nintendo to produce a yearly part game, Mario Party being the least offensive, and the Japanese seem to have liked Wii Party U, but I do believe they are kind of in Gamecube mode now.....pump out quite a few first party titles to be augmented by exclusive second or third party titles, and make the most out of the current situation.
Does Miyamoto mean 'Core Gamer' as in likes the cliché of the Dudebro FPS player, or does he mean 'Core Gamer' as in someone who buys all the machines to get all the AAA games, or does he mean 'Core Nintendo Gamer' that wants Nintendo/Japanese craziness with substantial and interesting gameplay and not Wii shovelware games?
I betting the 3rd first, then the 2nd, not the 1st.
Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?
I feel he means "Core" as in the people that follow the game industry and purchase more than two or three games a year. Which includes all 3 of your guesses
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

You do realize those markets tend to intersect right.
The problem nintendo faces is an obvious one. When I first went to buy my gaming console of choice I looked at it like this.
"Do I like Mario, Zelda, Metroid"
"Yes"
"Is it worth it not getting Batman, Mass Effect, and Destiny"
"No"
So I bought a PS4 and when I sold that I got a Xbox One .
It's not a question of whether I want a console that has Mario, Zelda, etc. It's a question of whether I want a console that has Destiny, Mass Effect 4, the Witcher 3, the next Grand Theft Auto, Halo, The Division etc. Until they can solve that problem they'll face the inroads of diminishing console returns.

@shingi_70 My thought process was like this:
"Do I like Nintendo games?"
"Yes!"
"Do I like third parties?"
"Yes!"
"Do I love Sony exclusives?"
"Yes!"
"Have I ever owned a Microsoft console?"
"No, but I'd love to try one"
"Do I have any money?"
"No."
My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

Last gen I was a one console man, but I think i'm going to try to get a refurbished Wii U early next year.

In an interview with EGE, Shigeru Miyamoto said that he does want to focus on making games for people who only have a "passive" interest in them, instead showing more interest in stirring up the passionate fans.
“[These are] the sort of people who, for example, might want to watch a movie. They might want to go to Disneyland. Their attitude is, ‘okay, I am the customer. You are supposed to entertain me.’ It’s kind of a passive attitude they’re taking, and to me it’s kind of a pathetic thing. They do not know how interesting it is if you move one step further and try to challenge yourself [with more advanced games]."
"In the days of DS and Wii, Nintendo tried its best to expand the gaming population. Fortunately, because of the spread of smart devices, people take games for granted now. It’s a good thing for us, because we do not have to worry about making games something that are relevant to general people’s daily lives.”
Dang you beat me to it, I was going to make a topic about this --This is not the first time Miyamoto has said this kind of thing & gamers didn't fall for it like @Mitsuko_Chan said. I think he's right they should go back to its core like many years ago. That the place to play is Nintendo Systems....All I can say its about time that someone at Nintendo says this...
LONG LIVE NINTENDO

Does this mean he wants to get back in the arms race for the most powerful console and lure 3rd parties back?
Yeah see, this is the problem Nintendo has, is that they can't find a market that they like and would be strong enough to support them. Nintendo fans just aren't enough anymore. So they either need the casual audience or the dudebro audience, and Nintendo doesn't really like nor is good at appealing to either one of them. The market is just shifting in a direction that opposes Nintendo's core philosophy, and I have a feeling that in the long term it's not going to end well for them.
tbh, while it might be another example of Nintendo going with the times and taking shots against the competition, anything that makes fun of gamers that complain about actually putting in effort or games that are insultingly linear and automated is a good thing in my good. While I don't usually get to play bad games anymore, there are some games like Ryse or Beyond or the recent Metal of Honors that are kinda insulting for people who like quality gameplay or game design.
If they want the kind of gamers that ps4 is getting, they need to work with third parties next Gen. Probably too late now but they'll never be anything other than a secondary console choice unless they get their support sad but true

Wouldn't this change in philosophy bring back 3rd Parties? Not the fact that Nintendo is saying this but when they act on it. If Nintendo is going after the Core audience almost exclusively again, wouldn't 3rd Parties want to think about coming back to Nintendo? I see this as a step to get 3rd Parties back.

Well if this really is some major change, they'll need to convince third parties to take them seriously. But that's something that can take years. But a long journey starts with a single step
