If Nintendo gave users a internal HDD they definitely wouldn't be removable meaning a Wii U HDD of doom will need to be sent back. If my $70 2TB dies I can just switch to the backup drive then grab a new one whenever I want... Better believe the MAB is highly certified D4L
So much better to have the Nintendo option of adding any HD any size you want so easily.
For more money on top of paying for the Wii U itself.
... they're still stuck in the Stone Age.
You're forgetting that high speed broadband hasn't reached %100 penetration so adding additional cost to the console for something that all their customer base won't necessarily use just doesn't make a lot of sense. Given you can buy a 1TB for fifty quid I cannot see why I'd want to pay more for less storage that I cannot easily upgrade. Giving users flexibility and reducing the number of returns due to faulty disk drives along with a lower price point is the best option considering the climate.
Someday we'll be paying subscription for games and streaming them from the cloud, but not now and probably not for more than a decade. I've got high-speed fibre broadband, but I know I'm in a minority in my country - I certainly wouldn't assume that all online services would assume the world lives like me any more than I'd predict the imminent death of physical media just because I've stopped buying it for awhile.

Exactly.
Besides, Xbox One and PS4 currently don't support ext. HDDs. You can't even upgrade the internal HDD in Xbox One, yet, but you can with PS4.
In this respect Nintendo is actually ahead of the competition.

Well, they could use the USB 3.0 ports for something different, but that's just stating the obvious... You can't replace or upgrade the internal HDD, and external HDDs aren't supported, so they must have something else planned.

Pretty sure all of them allow you to use an external HDD in the way that the Wii U does.
From what I understand, neither do. PS4 never will and and Xbox One will "in a future update". Wii U FTW.
Oh, that's surprising. Especially given that they made a point of including USB3 ports. Very strange indeed.
Not really, as its a fairly intelligent anti-piracy move. If the PS4 gets cracked, people won't be able to plug in 2TB HDs filled with dozens of games and play them. The Wii (and potentially Wii-U) on the other hand.....

The Wii U on the other hand formats any external hard drive with a Nintendo proprietary file system, which mean connected to any other device the thing is a glorified paperweight. So, piracy is not an issue and costumers can easily upgrade their storage. Best solution by far.

Yeah, well, not to mention that if the USB is there, then with piracy, you could connect the Hard Drive despite Sony not wanting to for legit purposes. It doesn't prevent anything.
500gb Buffalo ministation with y cable cost me around $55 on Amazon. Works great.
I have the 1 TB MiniStation Stealth (with the y-cable) and it works very well. If I was going to buy one now, I would stick with 500 GB and save a few dollars. I can't imagine ever going past 500 GB on the Wii U.
i dont know how people keep forgetting that the wii u got an ssd and not an hdd which is a significant leap in technology in before sony or ms which use hdd.
so to say the question would be if it was better to replace the ssd with an hdd where u got more space with less money but much slower.

You do realise that you can still swap out the HDD on the PS4/XBOne right? USB is no more vulnerable than SATA. If they can "crack" USB then there's no reason why they can't "crack" SATA.

If it hasn't been reverse engineered already I'm pretty sure its only a matter of time. I don't think it really makes that much of a difference in terms of piracy. What it does do is make it clear to the layman that that storage is for Wii U content and not for general media.
Think of it this way, look at what Steam does. You can use whatever storage you want to put your games on. USB, SD, SSD, HDD, Firewire, SATA whatever. You can probably even mount a network share if you wanted, I can't see why not. Them allowing that doesn't make their software more easily pirated. Because every now and then the game is checked against your account to see if you actually own it. The Wii U does this already, the Wii did it, all consoles do it.

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"
I got a 500 GB Toshiba Canvio USB 3.0 HDD from Amazon for $50. I also got a y-cable from Amazon for $1!
I think that's a good route to go...no problems so far
