Topic: What does "Retro" mean to you?

I would say the 32 and 64 bit consoles were retro. I mean let's face it, the N64 came out in 96. For now, I consider the 128 bit consoles to be modern.

Going off topic a bit, I have noticed that since the 360 and PS3 have come out that nobody talks about bits anymore. Anybody know how many bits the PS3 and 360 have?

Retro, IMO, is a style from a past generation.

A retro system should be one that was discontinued no less than ten years ago.

The N64 was discontinued in 2001, which was ten years ago.

Retro means nothing to me! Nothing!

I think it has to be 10 past it's ending point to be considered retro. I think once we go back 20 years, it becomes vintage. That's how I rate musical gear as vintage. I may be saying the same thing with a different term, but that's how I view it.

This is a nice discussion topic considering the age range of this site's members.

/sigh...

I'd say a good dividing line would be pre-disc era...although that itself is a bit muddy since there were some hybrids in the 16 bit era. Personally, SNES games have a fluidity of control that makes it kinda tough to truly call them retro, but they're old enough by today's standards to count I think.

I agree--this is a good topic, and one I expect to contain a great amount of variability in response.

Thanks Stuffy Stuff and Sewer_Murd. Its kinda interesting seeing what each persons veiw is. I mean we all very here and there and than again we differ as well. Age is a factor too to people. I mean I grew up in the NES area so by all means NES up to N64 are retro in my book, but I guess to someone who started with during the N64 era a NES might be consider an antique lol.

For me, NES would be retro. Maybe SNES as well, but I really can't bring myself to call the N64 retro, it just feels wrong. Maybe I'm just old.
