Topic: N64, what do I need.

I can get a N64 for really cheap. But I'm afraid it isn't complete. What kind of cables, accesoires and stuff do I need to connect it to the TV, power and to play it. It came with one controller, but if I can remember correctly there were different packs available. And are games saved on the cartridge or do you need some sort of memory controller?

Oh, and what are the must haves for the N64.

All you need are two cables; one to connect to plug into a power socket and the other to plug into the TV. As for the games, most of them do save on the cartridge itself, but there are a few that require a memory card to save, and some which require the expansion pak to play properly...

Now for game essentials:

Super Mario 64
GoldenEye 007
WCW/NWO Revenge
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo-Tooie
Mario Kart 64
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Army Men
Army Men: Sarge's Heroes
Battletanx
Battletanx: Global Assault
NFL Blitz 2001
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
Super Smash Bros.
Mario Party 1-3

I'll cut off there for now...

@Metroid You forgot DK 64 and Star Fox 64

@Sneaker If you have a Gamecube, you can reuse its video cable for the N64.
Most games save to the cartridge, but a few memory-intensive ones, Like Madden, require a memory card for things like season mode. Altogether, the memorycard was a very underused feature. I have about 12-15 retail N64 games and only madden took advantage of my memory card. Be warned managing save files has to be done in-game and not all N64 games have good data management software.
As for the rumble pack, GET IT around 40% of the games used it. If you buy a third party one, like I have, you can plug both the rumble pack and memory card in at once.
EDIT: You should deeply consider getting an expansion pack.
The N64 had many other seldom-used accessories like the Mic, game-boy reader, etc., skip them! They only worked with one or two games.
This on the other hand might pique your interest.

@shinesprite: I only included games that I've actually played/owned, but I'm not the only game in town, I'm sure DK 64 will show up on someone's list eventually...

The powercable was included, how does the video cable looks? I assume it goes from N64 to composite, but how does the N64 plug looks? Is it the same as the Wii (or is that just wishful thinking ).

I can do without a Controller Pak, not sure about a Rumble Pack but from what I've read I really need an Expansion Pack. Otherwise some games won't even work.

Perfect Dark is another essential game.

List of games that uses the Expansion Pak among other things.

Oh yeah, the Rumble Pak is pretty good for games like Star Fox 64 and FPS games. On fresh batteries it gives a stronger rumble than the GC controller. The rumble is intense during the crumbling of Ganon's Castle in OoT from what I remember, and fishing was fun with it.

The N64 and Gamecube composite cables should fit the same, so if you have a spare Cube laying around then use those cables. As for the Controller Pak, I'd recommend just getting one -- they're not terribly expensive and will come in handy down the line.

Other games I'd recommend:

  • Space Station Silicon Valley
  • Body Harvest
  • Shadow Man
  • San Francisco Rush 2049
  • Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

Mortal Kombat Trilogy is another good game especially if you like the MK series. Also any of the wrestling games are good too they are by far some of the best to date.

I'd like to add Duke Nukem 64 to the list of recommendations. Its an excellent port. The only downfalls are that there's no ingame music, little edits here and there to remove adult stuff (and rename steroids) and you need a memory pack to save your game (you can use cheats to start on certain level too). Overall, its still the king of FPS games with excellent level design and four-player multiplayer, and you can use bots too! Its also one of the few (probably only) N64 FPS games that has two player co-op!

Wrong. Perfect Dark, Hexen and Turok Rage Wars are also N64 FPS with 2P co-op. (Hexen is the only one with 4P-co-op)

I forgot about Hexen that was one of my brothers and mine favorite games on the N64.

Perfect Dark also has counter-op. One player is the good guy, the other player can be various bad guys in the level. I thought it was pretty fun, although a little easy to win as the bad guys once you spawn as a good character or have a good weapon.

Havent played Hexen or Rage Wars, but I cant belive I forgot about Perfect Dark! Definitely good choices for Co-Op and Counter-op mode is neat idea. And it gives players suicide pills.

Thanks everyone, so if I can get the N64, I should really invest in:

  • An Expansion Pak (was planning on picking up DK64, Perfect Dark and StarCraft 64, so I have to get the expansion pack).
  • A power cable (only have a spare one for the Wii since I now have component cables)
  • A Rumble Pak (although I don't think it's worth the price and trouble to find and get it)
  • Still not sure about the controller Pak. I've only seen a few games on wiki that only uses it that I don't think I really need it. Besides, I have Mario Kart 64 on the VC and don't like it (sorry lockelocke, I think it's the worst so far).

And from the stories and all the great game recommendations, it's clear that I need to get an extra controller .
