Hardest mainstream Mario platformer? Probably either Galaxy 2 or 3D World (in 3D) or Lost Levels (in 2D).
Hardest Mario platformer in general? Yoshi's Island DS, because it's cheap as hell and borders on kaizo in the secret levels. Endless World of Yoshis in the GBA version of the original YI isn't a slouch here either:
Seriously though, A Light in the Dark and Yoshi's Island Easter Eggs are hell. Like this:
Hardest Mario RPG? Mario & Luigi Dream Team. Especially in hard mode, where the giant battle arena becomes downright near impossible. Three hits, no healing, five extremely hard battles where the bosses hit about ten times per turn... jeez that's hard.
That's normal mode. Hard mode is brutal.
The Impossible pack in NSMB 2 is hard as well, although it's a toss up whether it can compete with Yoshi's Island DS for brutal level design.
And then you get the fan made stuff. Not countable here, but damn it can get insane:
If you're ever nuts, just look up the list on TV Tropes' page for 'Platform Hell':
Gotta say, Champions Road is the hardest Mario level I've ever played. Even harder than Lost Levels because I was actually able to beat that game. Champions Road though? I'm still working on it. It's RIDICULOUS
Mario Sunshine is hard but for the wrong reasons. It's not hard because it's difficult, It's hard because of its wonky physics, poor slope detection and its abundance of glitches. A lot of times. you just either have to trick the game into beating it or get very, very lucky.
The hardest Mario GAME though as a whole game, is probably Super Mario Bros 3 for me. I don't know why, I've NEVER been able to beat it. I still can't do it! It's kinda weird how this game is giving me so much trouble but Lost Levels was beatable for me.
Huh? I always felt Sunshine was a very polished game for the time. I strongly disagree with the notion you have to get lucky, the leaf minigame is hard but not insane and once you get it you get it and the pachinko game does have a very strong element of luck to it but from what i recall that's it.
I agree that Mario 3 is probably the hardest besides Lost Levels, 6-7-8 are pretty tough, and some levels on world 8 can still give me a tough time despite the fact i've beaten it countless times. Champions Road was awesome, i died way more that i'd like to admit but i also didn't "cheat" and go get powered up or use Peach/Rosalina.
Out of the ones I've played... yup, that one downloadable pack in New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the 3DS... you know the one but I guess that doesn't really count though, since it technically doesn't count in beating the game. Lost Levels are definitely the toughest to master. Super Mario World, admittedly, gives me a hard time. But then again, playing the Virtual Console version on a modern TV without the orignially-intended controller doesn't help much. Sometimes I wish I had a SNES instead of a N64 back in the day . . .but only sometimes

I have always had trouble with the original Mario games on the NES. It is a shame really because Mario is probably my favorite franchise in gaming. I actually think Super Mario 64 is harder than Super Mario Sunshine because I have had 64 for about 6 years and still only have about 30 stars.

I've still never beaten the American Super Mario Bros 2, so I'm going to claim it's the most difficult. Especially since we're disregarding lost levels.
Then again, it's also one of the few I never played after age 10.
Overall, I've got to go with Mario Galaxy 2. And not just because of the Perfect Run star. Plenty of the boss fights in that game are incredibly tough... and then having to do those boss fights again without getting hit once??? Yikes.
My game library ranges from Mario Kart to Call of Duty to Tales of Xillia to Diablo 3 to Forza. To me gaming is about having fun - not blindly supporting only one company while thumbing your nose at "the evil other systems."
I really can't see anything being harder than Super Mario Brothers 2 (Lost Levels.) I've played it before and couldn't make it past World 3.
The original SMB is a walk in the park by comparison.
Guess you've not played many Mario games that aren't platformers then. Quite a few of the spinoffs make the Lost Levels look like a cakewalk...
And which ones would that be? I've been around since the NES and I don't remeber any Mario spinoff being even nearly as hard as Lost Levels, let alone as hard as to make LL appear like "a cakewalk".
