Besides the obvious choice, which would you say is the most challenging to beat (simply to the end, not 100%). It doesn't have to be a Platformer, but if you pick something else you can add in what you believe is the hardest Platformer as well!
Probably the Lost Levels if it's just considering beating it normally. The obsession the game has with hammer bros and spring boards always gives me trouble.
If 100% were included I might also consider:
Mario Sunshine: The harder Retro Challenges and Blue Coins are a nuisance.
Mario 3D World: Champion's Road ALONE (especially with all five characters) makes this a runner-up
Mario games in general are usually pretty easy though, but there are definitely instances of legitimate challenge.
Probably the Lost Levels if it's just considering beating it normally. The obsession the game has with hammer bros and spring boards always gives me trouble.

Well, i would definitly go with Sunshine. One of the only Mario games i wasnt able to 100% (yes, i know that 100%ing isnt the point of thi sthread)
Some of its challenges, especially the ones without Fludd are fiendishly hard, and the wonky physics dont help either.
Other than that, if you play the original SMB for the first time or after years of being used to more modern Mario games, its anything but easy. Doable, yes, but it takes some getting used to.

I know you'll laugh at me but the hardest I've played is Super Mario Bros. 2... I can easily beat any other Mario game but this won't let me beat it. I haven't played The Lost Levels so I don't know how hard it is.
Often I've heard many people say that Sunshine is the hardest Mario game, it's the only Mario game I have ever 100% completed.. I don't know if that's good or just sad...
I have to go with 3D World, the main game isn't that difficult, but completing it 100% is just annoyingly difficult.
If just playing it without doing the infinite lives thing or cheating to continue or using warps. The first Super Mario Bros. (Presuming the Lost Levels isn't included as the obvious choice and just getting to the end.)

Either 1 or 2 I think. It's been a while since I've played 2, so I'll go with 1. 3 has some tough levels, but there is generally a way to get around them and you can get a lot of lives. In 1, on the other hand, world 8 is a brick wall until you get really good at the game. (Which I tend to think is fine for a final world.)
The hardest 2D Mario game would be Super Mario Bros. 2 or Lost Levels. The hardest 3D Mario game is definitely Super Mario Sunshine for being the only 3D Mario whose main content isn't a sleepwalk to do, though it could use a bit more challenge for my taste.
Lost Levels or Sunshine. Sunshine's retro stages are devilish. There's also that S8-1 stage (the golden flag stage) in 3D Land that gave me a tough time..
God first.

1. Lost Levels
2. Mario Galaxy 2 Perfect Run
3. Mario Bros. 3 original NES, on anything else its rather easy due to saves states/restore points
4. Mario 3D World Champions Road, its easy with peach, a cat suit and a reserve raccoon tail
5. Mario Sunshine - that pachinco mini game and poison river bring up bad memories
