This thread didn't even get to the second page before people started bashing Sony, lol. I would rather focus on the potential of the PSP2 because the 3DS doesn't interest me as it is now. A machine with less than a 5 hour battery life, 3 hour charge time, a small area of focus just to make the 3D work, and a lineup full of ports of games I already have is not worth anything over $149.
Bashing Sony? We're just telling the truth. Obviously, the 3DS is going to kill it because the DS already has such a huge headstart and because everyone in America just loves 3D.

3D's just a fad, really. And the one who starts first often ends last. Hell, the price difference alone could give Sony the edge.
It's likely the PSP2 will cost a lot more than the 3DS if the rumours about it being technologically on par with the PS3 are true.
On par with the PS3!? That's impossible, even for a handheld! Regardless, it's probably going to be a couple of years down the road before I even buy a PSP2, because I will be doing good just to purchase the 3DS at launch.
u al no teh P$p willl beet teh 3dS and $onie wil b n top n teh endz!!!1!11! Trollolololol
Irony.
Pushing fanboyism aside for a minute though, it would be fair to say that in the short term the 3DS will probably be the better performing console. It's coming off the back of the very popular DS, it's offering an exciting new technology (or possibly gimmick, see below), and it's going to have a head start on the PSP2.
But longer term? We don't know which console will be easier to develop for. If the PSP2 is a 'handheld PS3', then developers can take existing engines and make portable games relatively cheaply. The 3DS requires an entirely new approach to game design. That can be great for consumers, but developers don't like it so much, because it's a resource drain. If the PSP2 then sells enough units to be competitive with the 3DS, then there are developers that will jump ship.
The PSP2 is also likely to draw along a legion of existing fans. By being integrated with the PlayStation Network, the PSP2 esentially already has a legion of users, just like Apple basically won the mp3 war thanks to iTunes, Sony has a platform now that encourages consumer lock in. All Nintendo has is promises for the future and DSiware when it comes to this kind of thing, and I promise you all, loyalty to PSN is bigger than DSiWare loyalty.
We also don't know whether 3D gaming is actually going to be a gimmick, or a successful technology. If 3D doesn't prove as exciting long term as it does initially, than all Nintendo's going to be left with is an expensive platform with minimal benefit to developers. They got it right with the DS, but that, too, was a risk. I'm not discounting 3D here, but there is the potential that a more focused, straightforward approach to games that we assume will be the PSP2 will be, will be the right one if Nintendo's gambit doesn't pay off.
And finally, Sony actually made a handheld console that remained viable and supported. It's the first vendor other than Nintendo to do that. It's the first vendor to introduce genuine competition into the handheld console market. It's incredibly premature to dismiss he PSP2 yet.
Now, one thing I hope the PSP2 has is a 3G connection. Because if the PSP2 IS going to be a download-only handheld, It's going to be more convenient to have a 3G connection [free or paid]. If the PSP2 does have a 3G connection, I might even consider buying it at launch.
I'm quite excited for the PSP2 personally...As long as both analogs feel better than the PSP's analog stick (my main problem with it) and that they engineer it ergonomically to minimize hand discomfort (my second problem), I'm super excited. With a bit more robust of software support, and this interesting "PS3 games on the go" idea I've heard hinted....It seems like a great console.
Hopefully Sony got their handheld missteps out of the way with PSP and all its various generations...PSP 2 has me a lot more excited. My 3 of my 4 favorite portable games of this portable generation are for PSP (DQ9 being the only one on DS...and nothing being on iPhone )
