Topic: Is Sony playing it too safe on the PS4?

I do not think Sony is playing it too safe in its current standing. The console still has much to offer and I think they are not trying to submit all their good items all at once.

Ogreatgames.com is a great place to go for video games and much more!

@Ralizah: and a couple do the other way around (Witcher 3 for example) while both looking equally terrible.

Developers needs to understand that 1080p its just way too much for both consoles, they kinda did with the XB1, so they rather stop at 900p and get stable frame rates or go for 1080p decrease graphics quality and get stable frame rates.

Sony, MS, and the majority of 3rd parties both have set up their stalls to appeal to primarily 12-30 year old males for the first 2 years of console life. We've had Sandboxes, Shooters, Driving, and Sports. Lego, Skylanders, and Infinity are all well and good, but I get the feeling a lot of young gamers play them on last gen systems instead. The truth is for these consoles to hit really big numbers like the Wii they need to cater for kids, females, and older gamers- the sort of people who play games on iPads and Phones.

For all the negatives about Nintendo not having enough games (which is true), the same could be said for the other two machines if you're not in to the genres they're selling. I'm a 36 year old gamer and I've only just bought a PS4 for Arkham and SF4, but my next purchases are a while away in Broken Sword 5 and Disgaea 5, because I simply don't like AC, COD, or FIFA. Beyond Indies there isn't much more for me this year from Sony's camp. You can sort of see a change coming on the PS4 next year with a bit of variety (not so much the XB1), but it's still a while off.

Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?

@MrGawain: Yea, I despise Fifa, but CoD and AC really aren't as bad as people make them seem. Have you tried them? Personally, I really do enjoy the AC series, but I definitely don't play them at the rate of 1/year like Ubisoft wants me to. I'm still on the AC 2 expansions.

@MrGawain: If you wanted SRPG (Disgaea 5) games and Adventure games (BS5) you should get a PC, we have no shortage of those games and even gog.com has all the old-school games you can imagine (which run in pretty much any decent laptop)

@rallydefault:

I've tried AC3 and AC4 on the Wii U and really hated them, the storyline and dialogue put me off and I found the control of the character a bit hit and miss. I look at games like the Witcher 3 and Mordor and wonder if I'll have the same issues with them. With COD I have a real aversion to 1st person perspective as it makes me feel ill.

@Faruko

I've tried PC gaming once, but the whole system requirements thing bothered me and I'm not interested in pulling my computer apart to swap things in an out. I just want simplicity in a box, a cable, a TV, a controller and an on switch.

In reality the two machines that were personally made for my tastes are the Wii U and the 3DS- just a bit of fun for a bit without the competitive aspect or wild goose chase I find in a lot of games, I also tend to agree with almost all of Nintendo's business practises. But obviously were looking at a fairly dry spell in 2016 (and perhaps beyond), which is why I bought the PS4 to bolster my options and grab a few key titles (like Arkham that I adored on the Wii U).

The difference isn't huge, but multiplats usually reach a higher resolution on PS4 than Xbox One. Also, a couple of games run at a higher framerate.

The difference might not be huge, but I would prefer to play the better version full stop and 99.9% of the time, it is the PlayStation 4 and that's quite a sustainable enough difference for most folks. I would also rather play a 1080p game on my 1080p television too; anything less isn't making the most of my television, is it?

Going back to the topic in hand, I don't really think Sony should be singled out when both Microsoft and Nintendo (albeit to a less extent) have been 'playing things safe' too. All three companies are pretty guilty of it (so far).

Yeah, most of the stuff I want this holiday season are coming to the 3DS and Wii U, except for Fallout 4.

That said, the PS4 has a ton of good stuff coming out between August and the beginning of October. Because I like lists...

N++
Sword Art Online Re: Hollow Fragment
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture
Toy Soldiers: War Chest
Gauntlet: Slayer Edition
The Talos Principle
Until Dawn
Dishonored: Definitive Edition
Mad Max
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Nobunaga's Ambition: Sphere of Influence
Tearaway Unfolded
Blood Bowl 2
Toney Hawk's Pro Skater 5
Samurai Warriors 4-II

^And that's just the stuff that interests me, plus one or two obviously big ones that others seem to care a lot about.

...actually, now that I look at it, October-December has Disgaea 5, Trackmania Turbo, Darksiders II: Definitive Edition, Rock Band 4, Star Wars: Battlefront, Just Cause 3, and Tales of Zesteria as well....nvm, I have no idea how anyone can say that there's no games coming to the PS4 soon - that's way more than I could possibly afford in a short span of time...

I hope no one is throwing shots at the PS4 in this thread. They are selling well for a variety of good reasons. My point earlier in this thread was that... of course Sony is playing it safe with 1st party exclusives. Most of their money is going to advertising and 3rd party exclusive content. I wish Nintendo would focus on making series like Golden Sun and Advance Wars more prominent on console and handheld than go through Yoshi Wooly World and Kirby: Canvas Curse. And that's not a shot at those 2 games but I don't care that much for them.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

@CanisWolfred: Unless you own previous Rock Band games on PS3 I strongly recommend going for the XB1 version of Rock Band 4.

Why? I kinda can't buy a game for a system I don't own.

Not that it matters. I plan to buy it used two months after its released, and then buy the PS3 instruments on eBay for cheap.

@Ralizah: well 2 generations ago both gamecube and xbox were more powerful than the ps2.games always looked better on the xbox for exmaple. yet the ps2 outsold both, because all the teen girls wanted singstar version 389546.

everybody is playing it pretty safe this gen. except nintendo. but nintendo is doing a lot of other mistakes.

the ps4 only has one must have game for me up till now. but i will play mgs5 on my pc instead. no need to pay 400€ for a ps4

The PS2 had better third-party support and exclusives than any other console that gen. As long as a console isn't significantly weaker than the competition, it can dominate through a combination of effective marketing, strong software, and sustained levels of hype.

@CanisWolfred: Because all your already purchased content transfers over from 360 to XB1. As you know there's been a significant amount of content lost due to relicensing so if you purchased any exports or certain DLC such as Don't Stop Believing, Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" album, Smooth Criminal and all Spinal Tap on 360 you'll never be able to play it again unless you own the XB1 version (all purchased content transfers over to the upgraded console 360->XB1, PS3->PS4).

I only played Rock Band at other people's houses. I have to start from scratch, anyways...nor do I like any of the songs that were removed. <_<

Thanks for passing along the info, though.

So I have been thinking. I think the reason why PS4 has been doing so well is their focus. Microsoft was trying to sell an everything box to people. It was the One Box you needed under your TV, this did terrible and made their advertising look really unfocused. Nintendo was trying to target everyone, from the most casual player to the biggest hardcore out there. It made their advertisements look like they didn't know who they were targeting. Sony came out and said, we are a gaming box. We are here for people that want to play games. It kept their focus on games and that is what sold. Sony gave people exactly what we were looking for, games. (now the games may not appeal to you but that is a different subject) People wanted a dedicated gaming machine and that is what Sony delivered. We didn't want the iPod but for our TV, we wanted a gaming machine.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

@DefHalan: Ironically, it still does a lot of other stuff, but you're right, they don't focus on it at all. No one cares if it does anything besides games. There are too many things crowding for the same space, so people mostly wanted to play games on the PS4. And that's all I've been seeing in their ads and most of the last two E3 conferences.

@CanisWolfred: It is kinda funny to say but it doesn't matter what your system does or doesn't have, as long as the message is games and nothing but games, you will succeed. Gamers have been telling big companies this forever but they didn't want to believe.

I agree that Sony has won big with people who are gamers so far, but there is a bigger audience out there who they aren't catching at all. I can see the PS4 getting to 30-50 million sales on 'us' (the gamer who knows the difference between Grand Turismo and Grand Theft Auto), but for it to top 100m the box needs to sell to families (basically the Wii's patch) where Mum wants to play the fitness game, sister wants to play the just dance game when her friends come round, and little Billy wants to play a game that takes his attention away from his iPad. They need to justify the £330 price tag to play these sorts of things with more must have universally appealing games.

@MrGawain: Hrm...you may have a problem with Mordor, then. I would say the character movement/weight feels pretty darn similar to AC's, and in some ways, perhaps even a bit floatier. Which is not good. The combat is definitely tighter, though.
