Topic: Do you feel like the high cost of everything is just to get more money after the failure of the Wii U?

Everything is expensive. The console, the online, the controllers, the games, the amiibo, the DLC. Everything. This just makes it seem like they need to get more money from the failure of the Wii U so they are making everything more expensive.

Also, please don't say "other companies do it so it is fine for Nintendo to do so" because Nintendo never had to copy Microsoft and Sony.

Nope. The Wii U managed to break even eventually. The high cost is probably due to real world manufacturing issues like recouping the r'n'd for HD Rumble, hefty licensing to NVidia (remember those guys that make the chips!), global economies and currency exchange and maybe...just maybe...a decent build quality.

I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.

For the Switch itself, yeah. But there's enough that seems more expensive than necessary that I can't help but think we're being nickled & dimed to make up for lost revenue. Probably because of the Wii U. That's the reason for all of our recent troubles, I tell ya!

I'm not sure that's true, they did an accounting trick of writing off the costs so they can then say after that point every Wii U sold was for a profit.

I don't think the system itself is overpriced. I'm not sure if the JoyCons and Pro controller are overpriced because I don't know enough about the tech inside, but the dock definitely is. 90 dollars for a hunk of plastic with almost nothing inside is ridiculous.

I am not sure its got anything to do with the wii u failure. Nintendo has got lots of money.
The high pricing is imho an attempt to test the waters and see how much of a success its gonna be. How many early adopters, die hard nintendo fans and how much they are willing to pay.
Nintendo is a business and all business is set up to make maximum profit at minimum costs (money drainage nothwithstanding).
If it works then prices will remain stable if not we should see price cuts.
Like I said numerous times, its best to wait at this point and see where this is all heading to.

@KirbyTheVampire Has that price been confirmed. I really want a second dock and I can't see them on sale anywhere.

What's even crazier is how similar products sell for over $100 (see Microsoft tablets).

The Joy-cons are rightfully priced. Heck, the DS4 is $65 a controller, so $5 is not a big difference.

I don't think too that prices are that much high, especially considering all the tech inside (refering to joy-cons and pro controller). And by the way no, i don't think prices got impact from Wii U's failure. Would not be smart move from Nintendo and with Kimishima-san they're doing big improvements on a really good number of aspects. Instead i have to admit i like his work since he became leader at Kyoto!

You really think the console itself is overpriced? I completely disagree.

I think the dock on its own is overpriced, but I respect the pricing on the Joycons and Pro controller due to the extra tech.

shrktank

i am ok with the base price. The only thing I feel is gauging is not including the charging base for the joy-cons. I believe it is 29.99 seperate.

You could always choose a less expensive hobby.

lightningbolt79

@AlexSays so you believe I should choose to do a hobby that I don't actually enjoy just because it is cheap? I am allowed to share my views on things such as the price of the Switch.

You're asking me what you should do?

1) Find a higher paying job
2) Choose a less expensive hobby

I'm glad you sought out my help here. If $500 or so for the console, games, and controllers is too expensive for you, you'd be best to go with the previously mentioned options.

I don't know what alternative you're asking for. I would like to drive a Nissan GTR but they are just outside what I'm willing to pay. Do I go on the Nissan forums and be like 'listen guys... anyone else think this whole sports car is just a tad pricy?''

We have new threads all the time about people and their personal finances. Like little Jimmy in Uzbekistan probably isn't getting a Switch at launch either, go play with him March 3rd.

@Mellor2000 Yeah, it is. $90 for a USB to HDMI adapter second dock.

@lighteningbolt79 Going by your profile, you're in the UK where most games are already available on Amazon and elsewhere for 20%+ less than their RRP.Zelda can be had for £42,no different than what Xenoblade,SM3DW and the likes were available for online when they released, give or take a quid or 2.The controllers are only a little more expensive than the 3 year old PS4/Xbone equivelants and packs more tech inside.amiibos I'm not really sure about as I don't follow them but from what I've read, they are a lot better quality than before hence the more expensive price. The online subscription,if going by the Japanese price,is around half the price of the competition..The DLC I'm not really sure how you can say it's expensive when we know nothing of it really. The extra Zelda story could end up being a massive adventure on its own and well worth the price. And last of all the consoles price in the UK is more to do with the weak pound than it is Nintendo trying to fleece us

So no,I don't think it's expensive. It's a premium built console unlike the plasticky toy feel of past Nintendo consoles and it has a lot of tech packed into it to more than justify it's cost, even at the UK price.

So many words in the title, still such an unclear premise.

Everything is expensive because the Switch costs less. Duh

To be fair compared to other things on the market it's not that expensive. The price for the console itself is in the same ballpark as other high-spec tablets on the market. The price of the Pro Controller is about the same as the PS4/XBOne controllers, a little bit more but it has NFC. The Joycons? Yeah, they're pricey. But they're also packing the same hardware as TWO controllers.

The only thing that's kinda expensive is the Dock. Even then a second dock isn't necessary at all for you to enjoy the Switch and it's not that expensive. Sure you can get a discounted random Chinese brand USB Type C hub for like $40US on Amazon. Some of the more name-brand ones are closer to $70US. The only Australian retailer I can see stocking something similar to the Dock? They're charging $99AU, the dock RRP is $119AU. Is it overpriced? Yes. But not as much as people are making out.

Lastly there's the unavoidable fact that the Switch is two consoles in one. Consider the list of stuff I got ten years ago in order to get the full Nintendo experience at the time, from memory:

Wii - $389AU
2nd WiiMote - $70AU
Zelda:TP - $99AU
DS Lite - $199AU
Mario Kart DS - $59AU
Total: $816AU -> $1035AU adjusted for inflation

vs what I'd need to get on the Switch for the same experience:
Switch - $469AU
Zelda:BotW - $89AU
Mario Kart 8 - $89AU
1-2 Switch - $69AU
Total: $716AU
