When there's no Hedgehogs in sight.

When a character is two or more of the following:

• fat
• greedy
• thin
• Italian
• pink
• red
• yellow
• purple
• green
• round
• a monkey/ape (not in a ball)
• likes bananas
• follows his brother
• throws barrels
• tells you to do a barrel roll
• rides a motorcycle
• can't decide on which world he should stay in and/or what clothes he should wear (seriously, it's like there are two different Wario universes)
• rides in a spaceship
• is a fox
• is a frog
• is a dinosaur
• lives on an island
• owns and/or lives in a castle/castles
• is a turtle
• lives in a place that has mushroom or any food related thing in the title
• is a princess
• won a mansion
• is a professor
• makes inventions
• has a baby version of themselves
  (P.S. This is not a full list of traits for a Nintendo character, I just wanted to point out some of them)

When the ending boss isn't human

not sure about you guys, but for me

When you die 5 times in a row and aren't angry, but still eager to keep going.

This sums up my experiences with Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, pretty much all the classic nintendo games.

When they've changed the minimum amount from game to game (somewhat...sometimes), and you have no issue with that, try as you might. (see: Kart 7, Mario and Tracks, Spirit)
