Because it doesn't make sense without it. The force is something abstract like imagination or faith, but there is still a biological reason it exists. One of Descartes big ideas was that the idea of a soul interfaces with the body via the pineal gland.

Midichlorians are a similar concept.

Ha!!! It doesn't make any more sense with midichlorians. You've just relocated the magic madey-uppey stuff. Which is pretty much the exact response modern philosophers have to Descartes' idea about the pineal gland.

Just was about to post this when my modem went haywire, so I had to restart my computer.

And so I find Dezzy has totally beaten me to it in terms of that "microbes" topic in the meantime. Kudos!

Anyway, here's the actual post:

That was unbelievably bad.

Not the only thing, by far.

And that'd be perfectly fine!

Because it's MYTHOLOGICAL. It's MYSTERIOUS.

That's not a bug! It's a FEATURE!

And it had been for THREE FLIPPIN' FEATURE LENGTH movies straight! Who complained? Safe some severe cases of Asperger's, perhaps?

And since you're trying hard to get all philosophical here: introducing those microbes doesn't even fix the frickin' issue those squareheads, if anyone, take with it! LOL It's just shifting the problem by one instance, tainting everything with some futile pseudo-scientific gibberish and ridiculous imagery.

Sorry, but no matter how you twist and wiggle it: That's just totally uncalled for, piss-poor story-telling with the sensitivity of a blunt-edged block of highly enriched uranium.

Ah, I understand about the clones now. I didn't realize they died out. I assumed they just kept making more.

What? I'm not relocating anything. I'm just saying that abstract attributes have a biological interface. The Descartes reference is just an example.

Nothing quite like a bunch of psuedoscientific babble to borify high fantasy.

"Midichlorians make sense because there are biologicaZZZZZZzZzZzZzzZz"

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

Henmii

"Exactly the opposite. With a lightsaber like that many Jedis/Siths could keep their hands safe from other lightsabers"

I was thinking that too! And we haven't seen his or her fighting yet. Who knows what kind of awesome stuff this person can do with that light-saber?

"Same can be said for the acting as well; people act like Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher did Oscar-worthy performances or something"

I agree! Starwars was never a acting juggernaut.

"Ah, I understand about the clones now. I didn't realize they died out. I assumed they just kept making more"

Many people think that the Storm troopers are just clones with new armor, but as far as I know that's not the case. I always thought (and still are thinking) that Storm troopers are just ordinary people. But I don't get why they still are around AFTER episode 6. Have the new Sith re-installed them? Only time will tell.

I also feel that the movies may have a similar story to Avatar: Legend of Korra book 4. There all of a sudden people got wind-bending powers. I guess in Starwars all of a sudden people feel the force in them. That leads to a renesaince of the light side, but also of the dark side. Maybe after episode 6 the force went in some kind of sleep. Who knows.

One last thing about Episode 3: Not only did it have the most corny acting as I said before. But Anakins transformation felt abrupt. They made such a long stretch before the transformation, yet when the moment arrived I didn't make enough impact. Its hard to explain, but that's how I feel. Maybe it is because right after Anakin says: What have I done, he says: I do anything you want.

One of my favorite things about the original trilogy is watching Mark Hamill grow as an actor over 6 years. His acting is much more mature and effective in Jedi than it was in ANH.

And the acting in the original trilogy was mostly a stylistic choice. It was intended to feel like a 1950s sci-fi serial, with all the cheesy acting and dialogue. It was charming for that reason. In the prequels though, there was no such influence, but they doubled-down on the cheese and hammy acting. There's a pretty distinct difference between an intentional B-movie and an unintentional B-movie.

Even disregarding that though, the acting in the original movies was better than in the prequels. No, Hamill, Fisher, and Ford didn't win any awards. Hayden Christiansen and Amhed Best did though! Both received Razzies for their performances as Anakin and Jar Jar, respectively.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

iKhan

Hayden Christiansen is an awful actor with a horrible script. It was especially bad because I liked Jake Lloyd's performance in Episode 1. Leave it to Episode 2 to completely destroy any sympathies I had for the character.

But I don't get why Best got a Razzie. Jar Jar was a poorly written comic relief character, sure, but it's not like his lines were delivered poorly or anything. There just wasn't anything good in them in the first place. To use the saying, you can't polish a turd. I don't think even Leonardo DiCaprio could deliver those lines well.

Ironically, the often cited "bad acting" in the prequels is what's been bothering me the least about them. I wouldn't even have noticed!

Not sure if that's just a cultural difference as I'm not from a native English-speaking country or if I'm actually seeing through to the real issues here, which actually lie not within the acting. <shrugs>

I agree the lightsaber not only is impractical, but is not much to look at either. Doesn't hold a candle to Maul's double blade.
As for my hopes for the movie. They just shot straight up. When Disney bought Star Wars I had little to no hopes for this movie. When I found out the original actors were coming back that skyrocketed my hopes and then finally this trailer raised my expectations further. I can't wait for a full blown trailer for the movie. I was hoping the trailer could have at least showed a glimpse of Leia, Han, Luke, but that will have to wait for the next trailer.
A lot of work still needs to be done for the movie. And the most depressing news is that the movie is still over a year away.....

Ahmed Best is a trooper in every sense of the word.

I admire his continued stance against raging fanboys, even after all these years (look up his Reddit AMA, some people actually showed positivity towards his contributions, others shouldn't even be allowed on a computer) Jar Jar's roles in TCW show used him in a much better fashion overall, and really showed how much he grew since Episode I; especially in the Disappeared two-parter from The Lost Missions.

Its unfortunate that Lucasfilm, according to Best, holds fan opinion in such high regard. Because then its like Lucasfilm might as well let them be in control of the future of SW, instead of doing what they want to do. I'm truly glad Best never gave up on Jar Jar.

The worst thing to come out of Star Wars was the Holiday Special, bar none. These people who have such venomous hatred for a fictional character, need to seriously grow up. If Jar Jar was as terrible as the internet would have you believe, why do we still see him 15 years after his debut? (TCW, Star Tours, official comics, figures, Legos, etc.)

I'm glad Jar Jar's still around, we have too many "badass" characters in general anyways. Sometimes a fun, light-hearted character is a nice change of pace.

^ Boba Fett was introduced in the Holiday Special, and he's still around 30 years later. Time doesn't really seem to be any indicator at all of how well or poorly a character is received. I think it's pretty telling that Jar Jar went from a central character in Episode I to having like 2 scenes and 4 lines in Episode II.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

The SW fandom is one of the worst judges of how good or bad a character is. This is the group of people who propped up Boba Fett and Darth Maul, despite them being rather unimportant and completely undeveloped. They were both really plot devices that happened to "look cool". It's also the fanbase that argued that said Jar Jar, an albeit overused comic relief character, ruined Star Wars, despite him being almost completely insignificant to the plot.

I don't disagree at all. Boba Fett and Darth Maul are both completely useless and boring one-dimensional characters. I was only raising a counterpoint to Austroid, who asserted that Jar Jar appearing in later media was some kind of proof that Lucasfilm had confidence in the character despite his low popularity among fans.

If anything, Boba Fett, Darth Maul, and Jar Jar are all great examples of how easily susceptible Lucasfilm is to caving to fan demands. The former two were crappy characters that looked cool, so they became popular were fans and were awarded a ton of new appearances and stories... despite both having died on screen. Jar Jar resulted in huge fan backlash, and as a result was practically dropped from the next two films entirely.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

On the bright side, this gives some reason to hope JJ Abrams is not THAT different in that respect and drops that laser hilt in post-production...

People don't like the clone wars......WAT!

Anywho was going to post my thoughts in the main wars thread but this one gained much more traction. I guess I can go shot yby shot.

-We get some foretelling of an Awakening by an Unknown voice and it hits to John Boyega our new male lead clad in stormtrooper gear. Its pretty cool that not only do with see the next generation but its on a planet that's supposed to envoke the feeling of a new hope. You can even here the tie fighters and Falcon in the background, it looks like the empire is still after him after hetried to defect.

-Boom small Ball droid that will be the R2 for out new crew, its small but he's cute and is a much better kid thing than Jar Jar was.

-The storm troopers look mean and probably can shoot someone, someone pointed out that this is probably where we first meet John Boyega. This really reminds me of the clones from the clone wars cartoon when they were deploying from battle.

-Next we see Daisy Ridley the new female lead on a weird speeder cycle, she seems to be on the same planet as Boyega and the Falcon and if the rumors are true it sort of makes sense with her being Han and Leia's daughter. This shot most reminded of the prequels in framing and just overall desgin.

-Rounding out the new trio is Oscar Issac as an X-wing pilot and its rumored that he will be the new Han Solo of the group, This is followed by the mad boss shot of the X-wings on the lake or ocean of a unkown planet.

-The Dark Side with the new siith and his cross guard saber. I wonder who this is in the scene becuase leakes of concept art and casting gives three possible characters who it can be. We do know that this charcter is called Grave Digger and he collectors sith artifacts having a Vader, and Revan helmet.

-and the Light with the big money shot of the Falcon taking on tie-fighters.

-than we get a lightsaber sound which GMA confirmed to be Lukes blue lightsaber he lost at the end of Empire.

WAT!

Okay, the my hype has settled down, and I need to get this off my chest.

Here are my overall hopes for Episode VII:

  • Every lightsaber battle from here on should be modeled on the Anakin vs. Obi-Wan fight. It's a perfect blend of the well done choreography of "Darth Maul vs Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon" and the intense and meaningful atmosphere of "Luke vs. Vader" in Episode V. I want to be able to see the emotion and stakes in the fight, but I also want to see awesome looking fights too.
  • I don't want the Empire to be the villain anymore. That storyline is done. Episodes IV-III completely wraps up the story of how the empire came to be and how it fell. I am seriously hoping that all the Stormtroopers we see in the trailer are actually part of the new republic. Give us an idea of peace time after "Episode VI".
  • Please don't tier the villains. This is a recurring problem through 4 of the 6 existing Star Wars movies. The main villain we are supposed to focus on becomes much less imposing when we consistently see him taking orders. Grand Moff Tarkin made Vader seem like an errand boy in Episode IV, and the Emperor made Vader feel a bit disposable in Episode VI. Episode 1 and II do the same thing with Nute Gunray, Darth Maul, and Count Dooku. Only Episodes III and V properly focus on one main villain (yes, the Emperor appears in Empire, but the role is minor enough that the focus on Vader isn't obscured).
  • John Williams should be the head composer, but let's be real here. He's not gonna live forever. They need to bring some collaborators in that Williams can pass the mantle to.
  • I like the mixing of CG and practical effects, and I'm really excited for what that can bring to the table.
  • No Benedict Cumberbatch. He was a horrible Khan (I should know), and he is really only capable of doing one role.
  • Don't rely on the old veteran characters. They should be there to pass the torch on, not carry it themselves.
  • Speaking of, it would be really awesome if Mark Hamil did his Joker laugh somewhere in the movie. I don't care if it doesn't fit, it's just so perfect.
