Bullying and Harassment (The sensible definition not the disagreeing with somebody that states something publicly one that some people seem to want to use)

Is completely separate to trolling which is posting something deliberately to wind people up. (That might not even be what you actually think).

We "all" are not campaigning for anything. Everyone so far (besides OP) have said that stopping bullying and trolling is not possible, and not the answer. I think @rayword45 was just trying to say that even though we cant stop bullies, online harassment is still an issue, and it does occur. Yes it is easy to avoid certain sites, but not everyone has the good sense to back out when they might get hurt.

I'd say we should get back on topic, but at this point I'm pretty sure the discussion is over.

First, people have said to stop bullying and trolling online in the past because of suicide among other things. Not necessarily important to state but worth noting.

Second, who was forcing the kid to go onto the Internet in the first place? When you go onto the Internet, anyone in their right mind should know the potential consequences of their actions, and almost anyone that posts on a forum or other site should be old enough to realize the consequences and know to not take stuff seriously. Emotional abuse can be avoided if you take it as a joke (just trust me with this. I know. I have experience on the matter).

Third, what exactly are all of you campaigning for? A purely factual Internet? Because if you want to end trolling, you have to get rid of every forum ever, because 99.9% of all posts ever are biased in some way or another, which could offend someone, which could be seen as bullying/trolling, which could lead to a suicide. You may think I'm kidding, but somehow singing the Pledge of Allegiance in America is offensive to some Americans, so even the slightest bit of bias anywhere on a news site could upset someone. And that's emotional bullying, when you're offending someone.

Yes because everyone is tough like you, that we can ignore it.The kid who killed himself wasn't he was not tough if you learn more about what happened to him, he was a very sensitive.Don't know why he was on the internet maybe he didn't know people are on it,who knows. Now lastly we get it you made your point with those two giant posts, move on old sport move on.

Trolling will exist as long as people exist.

People just need to be prepared for what happens when you have anonymity in basically any situation; people let parts of themselves out in a way they wouldn't act in person, whether it's a bathroom wall or the internet.

People also need to be more aware of the various mental illness things that exist, like depression. It's something that can actually be treated. People need to realize that, and realize that plenty of other people also struggle in the same way, so you're not alone.

@ReindeerDasher If you looked at the post before that, you'd know that I clearly don't advocate for any sort of attempts to stop internet bullying. I was simply telling you that internet bullying DOES have effects and they shouldn't be disregarded. It's like when people tell victims of abuse to "just walk away", it's not always that easy.

I'm just sitting back waiting for this thread to get trolled somehow or another.

There's a difference between bullying and trolling.. trolling is more or less pranking or messing around while bullying is just being a ####.. and there are plenty of those out there, people are just too sensitive in this era to get over it or ignore it.

I may agree with you on the part about how we shouldn't expect a perfect world, but you've lowered the bar too much. I don't care if it's over the internet or something you should get over, only one hell of a ********* would encourage people to kill themselves, especially at random, and while nobody's forcing them to read it let alone follow through with it, have you ever met anyone emotionally unstable? Yeah, people need to learn to put up with these things, life isn't fair, but are we to be cynical merciless robots for the people who can't? Your concerns are a strawman argument, just cause one can be oversensitive doesn't mean that moderators shouldn't try cleaning things up a bit. When someone clearly has malicious intent to such a strong degree, they should be punished, maybe even legally. You have freedom of speech, but when you're a sociopath exploiting emotionally unstable people for sick kicks (not oversensitive people offended by the Pledge of Allegiance), you should be held accountable. The Libertarian strawman argument trying to fear-monger people over the potential of losing their freedom of speech in the name of prosecuting scumbags is pathetic. You just sound like a political tool regurgitating propaganda, not even thinking about what you're saying. Society needs thicker skin, but that doesn't mean that justifies exploiting it. Those who intend to have people suffering from depression commit suicide should be prosecuted, we shouldn't avoid making laws because they can be misinterpreted, if that's the case it isn't the law that should be removed, it's the one enforcing the law that should be removed.

Huh, I guess I'm a little different from most people in how I approach this. Sure, you can never fully end racism, bullying/trolling (can be a fine line sometimes), but I'm not afraid to stand up to them every time and everywhere.

People say "get thicker skin", or "avoid the situation", and that's not bad advice...necessarily...but I won't give in to the dreck of humanity who thinks they can just step on the sensitive people (like being sensitive is a bad thing...heck we could use more sensitive politicians).

Just because something seems impossible doesn't mean you shouldn't try. The United States--often known for it's pretentious and bigoted ways--is within a hair's breadth (lol, like 10-20 years) of passing a law that federally allows gay marriage. Haters and Bullys can't be stopped, but we can fight back. They asked for the war. I say we make sure they don't win.

It's happened before and it'll happen again. Is it unfortunate? Yes.

But it cannot ever possibly end. Because trolling and bullying are things that to some degree, are impossible to ever get rid of. You can try, but... it's just never going to happen.

And as said, there exists an awkward line between what's classed as trolling or bullying or whatever else. On the more extreme end, it's obvious. If someone's harassment calls them to commit suicide or something... yeah, that's obviously bullying. But most stuff is in a grey area which is far harder to 'police', and could have worringly implications for freedom of speech if someone ever tried to properly 'police' it.

The odds of the internet being able to stop "bullying" are about the same of the world ending racism/sexism/etc.
