I got really into an MMO for 3-4 years. Not doing that again. Not interested in spending 8 hours a day grinding, raiding, crafting, etc just to try stay competitive.
So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.
Nintendo are quite similar to Apple in the sense that they like to keep a certain amount of control of things so they can dictate the kind of tone of their games. I think that's where their cautious approach to online gaming comes from.
In general, I dislike that sort of thing. But I think it works for Nintendo. You can't really control what happens in a real MMO, and it's probably a mistake to try. But at the same time, if you're riding through Hyrule and some spoiled teenager starts shouting racial slurs at you (my general impression of what a lot of online gaming consists of), that's really not Nintendo any more. So I for one wouldn't mind if they just gave the genre a pass.
I'm going to be devil's advocate and say... a Nintendo MMO would be cool. As long as the issue Dezzy mentioned is cracked down on by admins, I think it'd be a fun idea. Maybe something with Miis? Your Mii could go on adventures to different Nintendo worlds, fight monsters, buy hats and clothes (I'm a sucker for the hats on the 3ds). Or maybe a MMO of an already existing IP, like Animal Crossing. shrug
I wouldn't call New Leaf an MMO by any stretch, but all my online multiplayer experiences have not been the best.
Formally called brewsky before becoming the lovable, adorable Yoshi.
Now playing:
Final Fantasy XIV (PC) | The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch) | Celeste (Switch)
I agree, I did try out Ultima Online about 15 years ago, but stopped soon after I'd realised I'd wasted a day on my life clicking on a cliff face to mine ore. Never again!
Never understood why an MMO is the "must have" game for Nintendo. The years and years of people demanding a Pokemon MMO still leave me scratching my head...
While I enjoyed my time spent with Guild Wars 2, I don't think Nintendo would handle an MMO well. It would either be too much like a normal game, or too much like the free to play World of Warcraft clones that plague the PC gaming market.
My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.
Better not. Aside of Nintendo most likely not being able to make a genuinely good MMO, there's also the issue with innovative mechanics. It's really hard to come up with anything fresh for MMO's nowadays, and the heavy competition makes it hard to bank on such features anyway. But what is even more important is that Nintendo could ruin any of their series with an MMO game, especially Pokémon or Zelda.
With an MMO in place, people would mostly ignore the "main" series and demand every new Poké/enemy/weapon/location to be added via expansion or update, effectively destroying the profit potential of both.
What I'd actually like to see, however, is a turn-based strategy RPG á la Project X Zone (minus the action-based Combat) based on Smash Bros., but with more flexibility.
I'd rather they stay out of that space. Too much competition, too many resources involved, and not enough return unless yours is a big hit.
Yeah, this is a huge problem too. World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, Final Fantasy XI... and there's pretty much your complete, comprehensive list of MMOs that didn't plummet in playerbase within the first 6 months. Rate of retention for MMOs is pretty awful.

Thing is now MMOs are yesterday's news. Now it seems MOBA's are the in thing now. It would be interesting to see a Nintendo MOBA with characters from different Nintendo franchises like what Smash Bros did with the fighting genre but I honestly I think that would be overkill.

Surely FF14 is doing quite well? I would've thought a lotta the FF11 players switched to it?
