Yeah, this is a huge problem too. World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, Final Fantasy XI... and there's pretty much your complete, comprehensive list of MMOs that didn't plummet in playerbase within the first 6 months. Rate of retention for MMOs is pretty awful.
Surely FF14 is doing quite well? I would've thought a lotta the FF11 players switched to it?
They're still slowly graduating players to ARR, but FFXI apparently still gets new content so some players are still finding there's little reason to upgrade just yet.
Personally I upgraded solely because ARR's graphics didn't look like @$$.
The only problem would be that if Nintendo decides to use real money to get game stuff, it won't really attract a LOT of players. games like Sprial Knights could have been great if it wasn't for the forced cash to get game stuff.
Personally this really isn't going to do much for Nintendo because if they make something like this and when they start the next gen console, it will cost them even more to support the game from the previous gen and if they shut down the wifi, gamers will get angry. Not only that but Nintendo only makes genres that work and the ones that don't are made by a second party dev.
As someone who has played mmos almost everyday for the last 14 years I would have to say not a good idea. The entire genre is collapsing in on itself due to greed and ever decreasing attention spans. Ten years ago it might have worked.
I thought that fantasy life was for an equivalence to a major console/PC MMO would be, or am I under a wrong impression. Level 5 did release WKC and it was a MMO to a certain extent and considering that they are the developers of Fantasy life (which also has online) you would think they would implement something similar for the N3DS to WKC's online quests. If not you always have MH4U next year.

You forgot one, Eve Online, whose playerbase is still growing (recovering after a brief backslide, the first in its history) and has been for the past decade. FFXIV is doing phenomenally well also.
I'd love to have an MMO I could play on the Wii U. Actually, I don't understand why Wakfu isn't on the console...
