Topic: Movies you like that everyone dislikes

There are tons of movies every year that do well or bomb miserably. In most cases these are due to the fact that the movie being good or bad in itself, or word-of-mouth spreads that its either or. What are some movies you’ve enjoyed that you feel that everyone else hated?

I’ll start…

-Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace: When you look at it in retrospect, Episode I is the most original of the Prequels, like seriously; not to mention it had (more than a handful of) actual sets, props, ships, and puppet characters. Compared to Episode’s II and III, which were 97% CGI and borrowed heavilyfrom the OT (and I love Episode III). Sure the plot is kind of boring at times, (I can’t stand the entire Coruscant sequence) but there are plenty of shining moments like the Bongo Sub chase, Podrace, and of course the three-way battle on Naboo with arguably the greatest Lightsaber duel of all six films.

One last thing I have to address is the supposed universal ‘hatred’ for Jar Jar Binks and the Gungans as a whole; if OT purists can find an excuse to like the Ewoks for whatever reason, I don’t see why these “BA” amphibian aliens can’t be treated with respect. They are a far more interesting society than the Ewoks and have a much richer culture. There was even a Gungan Sith at some point in time. As for Jar Jar, I liked him. He was a light-hearted sidekick who cared for his friends, and always did what he knew was right; much like a certain Protocol droid. He’s there to remind adult fans (who won’t “grow up,” so to speak) that SW was and will always be a series primarily aimed to children. I also probably laughed at his antics when I first saw the movie like most kids did (and still do). Plus his involvement in the Galactic Senate throughout II and III, showed that he ‘grew away’ from his comedic side. He also knew what he was doing, and is an intelligent being. (Giving Emergency Powers to Palpatine doesn’t count as stupid, because he doesn’t know what will happen like the audience.) A decade-plus of hating seems a little childish at this point.

-Dragonball Evolution: The most common reason people hated this was that it didn’t stick to the source material… yeah, it would’ve been “way better” if: Bulma’s hair was all blue, Roshi had a long beard and wore sunglasses, Piccolo’s antennas were sticking out, etc. The characters were all fine as they were, and the simplistic plot was quite honestly a breath of fresh air; especially when most films these days have to have a “plot-within-a-plot, with sub-plots.”

-Jurassic Park III: Most agree that the first JP is the best, and it’s always Lost World and JP III that constantly get compared and contrasted. What makes III better to me is that the plot is simple and straightforward, with a lot of fun and exciting dinosaur encounters; kind of like… the first JP. All the main cast members did a great job with what they had to work with, and Sam Neill’s return was a major plus; because he’s awesome. There’s no “dinosaur animal rights” message or severe lack of iconic moments that Lost World didn’t have. Plus how can you go wrong with Sam Neill?

-Speed Racer: This one I can see why it didn’t do so well, its literally live-action anime. With all the exhilarating races complete with flashy colors, it’s a wonder there wasn’t a seizure incident! But beneath its eye candy atmosphere, is a fun story with sincerity from its over-the-top actors; who truly breathed life back into an all-but-forgotten Japanese classic. It unique approach to storytelling simply makes the movie a joy to watch.

I'll say I also liked Phantom Menace. And the first film (Episode 4) bored me enough that I've never watched any of the others. Go figure.

While I do love Star Wars IV, I will say that it has not aged too well.
Star Wars V is a masterpiece though and Star Wars IV still holds up pretty well too.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I'll never understand why everyone hated it so much. It's cool to hate what's new, perhaps?

Dark Shadows. This seems to have been Depp's worst-received film in a long time, which astounds me, because I loved it. Great mix of comedy/drama, gorgeous cinematography, great acting, etc.

The Starwars prequels, I didn't think Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull was bad either, and if we were talking about the other side of the spectrum, I would say that I never liked WALL-E.

I used to travel the stars, then I discovered Earth, and these incredibly addicting things called 'Video Games.'

I still think Monsters Inc. is a vastly overrated film, whereas A Bug's Life is underrated.

This happens off the internet too, in case you haven't seen it.
Star Wars fans in general tend to lose it when people mention Jar Jar.

I also liked Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I never understood why people hated it so much. Even if it wasn't as good as Raiders of the Lost Ark it was still a great action movie.

I liked the Star Wars prequels, except episode 2.

A Bug's Life being underrated, thirded. I actually watched that film again last week.
I like both The Lion King Sequels. I don't understand why so many people seem to hate them. They definitely weren't as classic as the first one but I still think that they were great.
Also, this
Untitled
gets too much hate. I guess isn't that renowned because you wouldn't understand a lot of the movie if you hadn't read the books, but a lot of people were upset about the changes in the movie(and there were a LOT of changes). It's not one of my favourite films ever, but it is one that I like to watch again from time to time.

I really enjoy Water World and Willow. I don't care for Indiana Jones in general, just something about Harrison Ford that really bothers me.

Star Trek (2009) I thought this movie was amazing, it was also one of the only few things Star Trek related that I've watched. But everyone at school instantly hated it because it was Star Trek, therefore it means its for complete losers with no lives... seriously?

I generally hate the Star Wars prequels, but I thought Episode II: Attack of the Clones was pretty good.

And while I don't think it's hated, The Last Unicorn is a fantastic animated movie from the 80's that doesn't get the respect it deserves.

Pirates of the Caribbean 3. I mean granted, the problems of parts of it feeling a bit too pandering to fans of Jack Sparrow to ridiculous degrees or having too much things going on that could be their own movie are entirely true. But as a whole the movie's incredibly fun, and honestly far less of a rehash than the 2nd one. While I wish there was more of the 9 pirate leaders or the character deaths or the purgatory Jack ends up in, all of it is really entertaining. The humor's as good as the first movie and all the backstabbing and double crossing is done very well and it's a great conclusion to the series.

Pretty much any Adam Sandler movie. I think that a lot of his movies are hilarious, while the movie critics seem to hate them. I also like Phantom Menace. Jar Jar isn't really that annoying..
