Consoles. There's no reason to play video games on the go as they're too distracting and there's too much to experience in life than to limit one's self to something that can be done at home on his day off.
And what big life experience is there while im waiting for half an hour to an hour at the doctors office or the DMV? Not exactly the best quality of people i want to get to know either while im sitting there. Or how about a long train/plane ride where you are just sitting there anyway. Half the time my fellow passenger is falling asleep anyway. Not every place outside the home has some exciting experience waiting for me
In general, handhelds. There's just something about being able to curl up with a game anywhere, not having to mess with cords or TVs, not having to worry about power surges, etc. that just make them irresistible to me.
Handhelds, all the way. That way I can watch TV and play at the same time.
You're quite majestic.
I tend to play stuff that's either turn-based or not necessarily action-oriented, so it's not like I have to pay attention to both at the same time. I just jump back and forth depending on if whatever news or sports I'm watching is in a stretch that's interesting.
Can't do that with a console, so I chose handhelds.
For multiplayer, obviously consoles are the way to go.
Consoles. I like the larger screen, and most of the time I just play my 3ds at home anyways (I get too distracted playing in public), which takes away its only advantage (being portable) over home consoles. Also if I feel like playing in bed, I can just use the Wii U gamepad!

Of course it doesn't apply to every moment you spend outside of your home, but putting down the toy in return of actually living isn't necessarily, well, unnecessary.
I don't understand how you can dismiss getting to know people you've never met. Trying doesn't hurt and neither does acting human.
My original point was that, if you're on a business trip, going on vacation (especially if you're riding in a car), or even riding the bus to work, don't associate yourself with video games. It's unnecessary. speaking of 'unnecessary', please don't go out of your way to make things personal — TBD
Definitely handhelds! I just like them much more now. They're quicker and easier to turn on, portable, and lately have been having more games I'm interested in.

So are you saying that cellphones/iPhones should only be taken out and used in public if you urgently need to contact someone? Nobody really needs to use facebook, Twitter, the Internet, or phone games when they are out and about. Please don't take this as an attack. I'm just trying to follow your logic.
Edit: On continuing to think about it, reading a book or magazine when in public would be just as bad.
When I was younger, I used to play consoles more, but I've moved on to portables.
I don't have the TV to myself enough nowadays to really get invested in large console games, portable gaming is slightly more affordable, and I have something to do while waiting in the laundromat, ect.
