The Q could also stand for queer. Straight people can be included with the letter A, which stands for Allies.

A is for asexual, not ally.

On the topic of it being in video games, I want it to be used in a game in a way that's not special; as in not thrown in as a token or to be "oh look, we put gay people in a game!"; I want it to just be there, and used in a way that makes sense for the stories or characters, if that makes sense.

Also, I should probably actually identify myself as "asexual", which is only an approximation, really.... my sexuality is kinda weird, and... that's all I'll really say here.

I've never seen asexual included, but I guess that works too.

I'm a straight male on my early 20s, and there are a few games that pitray LBGT in a good way, buy this is the industry that still can't portray anything that's not the Nathan Drake archetype that well or in mass.

Last game.of note that impressed me was Mass Effect 3 with Cortez who happened to say but it did't define per say. (It was more the loss of his husband for why he reenlisted). Kelly was also well done, even with the obvious Edi jokes.

WAT!

@May_Nyan

i havent played the game. you can make babies there or what do you mean with "avatar's child"? you can't get babies from homosexual sex so...
but yeah the whole topic is still underrepresanted in games. it shouldn't be so hard to add something else than the usual heterosexual stuff.

@Tsuchinoko well, I am very "gay friendly", as you put it. I have a high level of sympathy and understanding for gay, etc. people, and I believe that people are people and everyone should be equal, no matter what distinctions (racial, sexual, etc.) you can make between them... we're all just people!

Thats cool, thanks. And the thing is, especially in recent years, the number of gay men and women that have come out as nerds and gamers has grown. So instead of the gay lesbian kid that just gets beat up in school, you might meet the GLBTQI kid that beats you in Smash or any other game.

For example, I've beaten people that have played in tournaments, and i main Zelda.

I never got the Avatar's child in that game because I couldn't get myself to make them marry the opposite gender
It makes me feel lonely and like I shouldn't exist =(

I love Fire Emblem, and for me I don't really think too much about games which have characters reproduce. In the real world my guy and i can't make a baby, so I understand i guess. I dont think games like that could include gay couples unless there was an adoption option.

Yeah, and thats a new addition. It basically means anyone who doesn't have a label. I wanted to add straight, thats why I added "and of course anyone else". In the States, Canada, China, and japan i have straight friends who are very supportive of their gay friends.

@Aviator I said it also could stand for queer, and I've certainly seen it stand for queer. It works both ways. I guess since I have a background studying queer theory, I just am more familiar with that.

I'm a straight male so I really hope I don't come across as insensitive here (because I am not against different orientations at all, heck my mom's bf has a gay son and he's awesome!), but I think the reasoning in Fire Emblem is the "marriage" system is more in place to mask its purpose in "breeding" characters. The setting of the game makes adoption very unlikely, and the children are designed to be offspring, so gay/lesbian couples would throw a wrench in the whole thing. I mean, it sucks that you can't marry the character you want (unless you make your avatar the opposite sex), but I think it's constrained because of the children characters (not to mention all the other characters in the story are straight and, well, people don't just change their orientation, though that's a different story, obviously there could've been bi characters).

@ MAB You're going to have to explain thought a bit.

In the indie game Knytt Underground, there are two fairy partners that travel with the protagonist, and one of them is very openly a lesbian (even talks about a girlfriend whose parents were conservatively religious and found out and pretty much disowned their daughter). As she's a main character, her struggles are mentioned a lot. I suggest checking it out, it's a great game!

In fantasy and sci-fi games they could use technology/magic to reproduce.

@ShadJV: The setting of the game makes adoption absolutely likely — there are all kinds of villages being destroyed, people dying, children potentially orphaned. They could easily have had the parents adopt an orphaned child that somehow had the same 'bred' characteristics from the adoptive parents. The real problem (I think) is that it would've opened the game up much more than it already had been. It already takes an insane amount of time to go through and see every single conversation available between the characters, imagine how many more they'd have to come up with for same-sex couples and their ensuing children... not to mention all the children they'd have to invent for the fathers since all the current children are tied to the mothers, and the extra conversations between those kids and the other kids and the avatar and holy crap, it'd be absolutely insane. amazing, but insane.

After grinding conversations in that game for a few weeks (and i'm still not done! i have to go back and finish... someday), as much as I would've enjoyed having same-sex relations an option in the game, I have to admit I can see why they would have left it out as an option. Perhaps in the future they'll switch things up with how 'breeding' works and have the kids tied to specific characters that aren't all female, but for this first foray into the deal, I came to accept it for what it is.

The world is still too politically correct for more widespread homosexual content, but this might change in the future.

It's on its way. Maybe it's just perception, but gay and lesbian relationships seem to have made quite a bit of headway in the last 5-6 years. A decade ago, a celebrity coming out of the closet was a Big Deal. Today, it's usually a footnote. Or maybe Ellen is just that awesome. Who knows.

Not to mention homosexual couples really wouldn't have worked in the premise. While they could adopt, it would just get complicated with the children characters.

Asexuals aren't sexually attracted to anyone or anything though, so doesn't seem very approximate at all.
