Topic: GLBTQI gamers unite! and of course anyone else

I guess what prompted this thread was the growing perception, mainly in the western gaming community that video games are mainly a heterosexual male medium. I personally think they are a much more universal form of entertainment. Yes of course with the over abundance of sexualized female characters, from Bayonetta, to the recent versions of Samus in her Zero Suit varieties, to more blunt games like Senran Kagura Burst, there is obviously more fan service towards a certain audience.

I want to make it clear, i don't want a conversation about sex or politics, just chat about games from various perspectives. I personally am a gay man who lives in Japan, and is married to someone of Chinese background. The world is very diverse and we should celebrate that.

So just as a starting discussion, how do you think GLBTQI people have been portrayed in video games recently. I personally like the portrayal in games like Mother 3, or anything in the Final Fantasy series, as opposed to recent portrayals such as in the GTA games.

Anyone is free to join in, regardless of their gender or background. I want this to be an all inclusive discussion.

I'm a bisexual male gamer that is currently single, and the western video game industry has actually had more LGBTQIA themes put into games latley, most notably, Mass Effect and The Last of Us.

Like crap.

If they're inserted in games, most of the time it's tokenism or it's very poorly done.

Well im curious, since cultural representation is so different, what was the representation in The Last of Us, since thats the more recent, award winning game.

One of the characters in the main game (forget his name) mentions his partner.

In the DLC, Ellie and the other girl share a kiss.

Hmm, thats interesting, and makes a case for recent games being a bit better at least. For a lot of the last two decades we got mostly hints. The big ones i can think of from when i was younger were Muki and his friends from Final Fantasy VII, and Tony from Earthbound aka Mother 2. I think the latter has a lot to do with the Mother series being written by a single person, and not Nintendo as a company, so he was given a little freedom with the writing. That he came out years later to reveal those details about Tony was interesting, but its nice that Nintendo didnt try to refute his comments.

I am familiar with Mass Effect, and from what I've heard thats the most progressive as far as openly allowing those themes to be present, but according to the players preferences, and not a story that is set in stone. I think Fable had those same options to a lesser extent.

I looked on the Ace Attorney English wikia and there was no info about that. I guess i have to play the game myself.

@swiket is The Last of Us a Ps3 or XBOX game? I have been a strictly Nintendo guy for a while now. If its PC I might get it at some point.

I really really wish you spoiler tagged that part about the Last of Us DLC. I guess this is what I get for going this long without playing it yet.

I would've, but a) I don't know how to use it and b), wasn't it hinted at in the main game?

Anyways, sorry 'bout that Swiket.

I think you're fine, as long as its not The Crying Game anything like that shouldn't be counted as spoilers right? Then again I've never played the game . Isnt it about zombies? What do two girls kissing have to do with that?

Magikarp3

I'm a straight male gamer, but I honestly thought the scene with Muki in FFVII was quite... demeaning to LGBTQI culture? It used a lot of those elements as the butt of a very extended joke.

Also, obligatory mention to the indie game lately which has a wonderful portrayal of a LGBT relationship. It's a Crying Game style spoiler though, so I'll tag the game.

Gone Home.

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

To add on to that, how does everyone feel about the current representation of GLBTQI people, even in smaller roles as opposed to ten or twenty years ago? Has it gotten better?

Thank you for chiming in, and of course i want people of all backgrounds to add to the conversation. And honestly, i understand the Muki criticism, but for me its about representation, and for a lot of groups its sort of a take what we can get sort of situation.

You will have to expand, since its an indie game, what is Going Home?

Edit: wow, i just read a bit about the Muki scene. I guess as an innocent kid i never thought about it too much, but yeah...im curious to read a bit aabout the writers intentions with that scene. Earthbound had Tony, who had a crush on Jeff, according to a later interview by the writer. Thats nice, but Muki. Wha does that mean?

I'm straight and male, but I am highly supportive of LGBT rights, etc. (Also, question, I've never seen it abbreviated as GLBTQI, what does that stand for?) And you know what? I've never once stopped to think about it being in video games or not. I don't think I've really ever seen it in a video game, and that is a shame... of course, I don't play a lot of games with any sort of love interest(s) at all in them, so... there's that, too...

Im gay, and as someone still in their 20s, its new to me still but was introduced to me as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersexed, and questioning. Its meant to cover all people, but asa gay nerd for a long time i didn't know for a long time what this meant. Its a very broad term, but still doesn't include straight people who want to comment on these kids of topics. There are very militant gay only sites, but i am not very political, and am just a nerd who wants to include as many people as possible. Thats my only goal with this.

@ MAB You're going to have to explain thought a bit.

@Tsuchinoko alright, I'd never seen it with a Q at the end, that threw me off a bit. Thanks!

oh no thats cool! Believe me i hadn't seen that version of it until recently. From what i understand thats the current all-inclusive term. Of course straight could be put in there as well since ive met many gay friendly straight people, both in the west and in Asia.

@Tsuchinoko well, I am very "gay friendly", as you put it. I have a high level of sympathy and understanding for gay, etc. people, and I believe that people are people and everyone should be equal, no matter what distinctions (racial, sexual, etc.) you can make between them... we're all just people!

I don't like it when games where there is romance like Fire Emblem Awakening don't allow same gender romance...
I never got the Avatar's child in that game because I couldn't get myself to make them marry the opposite gender
It makes me feel lonely and like I shouldn't exist =(
