I got a DS because I tried my brother's before and fell in love with the touch screen... Then I got a DS lite because my old DS's R-trigger broke... Then I got a DSi mainly for DSiWare... the camera and sound thing were pretty fun distractions too...
I'm working on a game that's coming out soon! Cipher Trailer
i got it strictly because i could get it, and i was curious what the DSi ware games would be like. i'm expected a DSi XL in the mail when its released.
I bought the first DS a few weeks after launch. There were some imported US ones before it released but those were very expensive so I waited for it to rlease here.
Eventually my DS' casing broke because it fell. I found a replacement shell somewhere on a webshop which I ordered, but I broke the DS while repairing it. I then bought a DS Lite. I haven't seen a reason for me to buy the DSi just yet so I guess I'll skip it. If there's ever gonna be a handheld VC I think it is not gonna be until the next DS.
Dsi- Well my last portable gaming machine(N-Gage) broke the summer of 07' and I never really consider getting another one. I was trying to hold out untill Microsoft came out with a handheld gaming device, but that never happen. Then Gamer Informer had 3 great DS articles in their May 09' Issue. One was the review of the New DSI where they gave it a A-. On the very next page they had like 30 or so top must have games for the DS. Finally close to the end of the magazine they had reviewed the hand held game of the year, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, which they gave a 9.25. I was pretty much sold after that. My very next paycheck I purchased a Black DSI with GTA and havent put it down since.
A few things made me want to buy a DS back in the mid Noughties:
NGC - the precursor to NGamer (natch) - used to give away DVDs. One on of them was an E3 2004 recap, which showed a Sonic The Hedgehog demo. It later turned out to be the bonus game in Sonic Rush, but I thought it looked amazing.
I played a demo of WarioWare Touched in Gamestation. It was bloody brilliant - I wanted a DS so I could play that.
Lastly, the UK price was quite generous. It wasn't the £200 that I thought it was gonna be - think it was actually £99.99. Affordable and enticing enough for me.
I got my original DS because I'm the biggest Nintendo fanboy ever the whole touch screen thing looked cool plus the fact that it could play GBA games too.
I got my Lite because it was smaller and cooler looking.
I got my DSi because A) My Lite was about to die for good B) I liked the idea of a camera and voice recording and downloadable games and stuff.
I got the DSi because my DS Lite has the infamous cracked hinge, plus the Touch Screen is very worn down so only games with finely tuned touch-screen calibration work worth a crap.
i got the Lite because it was the next nintendo handheld, and the touch screen looked awesome I want to get a DSi because the camera, while being bad quality look fun to mess around with, and the DSi WAre service. might wait for the XL though...

DS Phat - wanted the next new console so I could continue playing my favourite franchises. DSi - DS Phat hinge broke, had enough money for one. Got it over the Lite because DSiWare looked promising, and I still have a GBA SP for my GBA games.

I got my first DS for Pokemon and then I got another DS Lite because my old one broke, haven't got a DSi, Im fine with my DS Lite. And I don't want any game on DSiware, and the ones that I do there are full retail version anyway.
