For me I wanted the DS because of Advance Wars DS. As soon I learned it was gonna be released, I freaked. I didn't finally get a DS until like 2 years after that game came out however.
The main and only reason for me getting a DSi was for the possibility of a DSiVC. Still waiting on one, but its not so bad a wait when there's eBay for classic Game Boy games and some excellent DSiWare games being released every now and then. EDIT: Oh, and my Lite had a pretty big crack on the hinge part and the screens were getting kinda filthy, so I figured I'd upgrade.
I bought a DS for Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. Being a fan of the last Castlevania game, Aria of Sorrow, I just had to play it. I haven't bought a DSi, and I don't think I ever will, unless DSiware brings GB games to the service.

DS - To be honest, I wasn't really interested in one, as GBA games were still awesome. I got one when I decided everyone had one and I wanted one, and because the Lite looked cool in black.
DSi - Two and a half years into my second DS Lite (I lost my first one), my L button no longer functioned and my A button was about to die. It was then that the DSi came out in Japan, and the whole "downloadable games" feature won me over.
phat ds- was because it was it was was 3d (if u know what i mean) and that it had touchscreens i heard about that was really interesting and there was some games like animal crossing ds the idea of playing a console game though not the same game portably excite me and the fact that there was super mario 64 ds. cant remeber the exact reason though as it was like 4 or 5 years ago lol
dsi- was because of the digital download servce, had sd card, hopes of a dsivc, i only have 5 gba games, and it had all those neat little features like the camera and listening to music and the internet, etc plus it was more slimer in a way plus brighter screens and bigger ones.
I got my Ds Phat because I loved the Idea of Wireless multiplayer, the touch screen, the dual screens, etc. Then I wanted to get a DSi because my DS started dying, and I wanted a Camera anyway. I still have my DS, gamestop actually had a replacement battery 5 years later

I was going abroad for a year and couldn't take my Wii, so I wanted to get something to hold me over, so I could at least get my Mario Kart fix. To be honest, I almost went with a Lite for the GBA slot, but I decided to get the DSi just in case they came out with a VC or the download service got any better (then I could buy new games without paying an arm and a leg shipping them here at least).

I received my DS Lite as a birthday gift soon after it came out. The main reason that I asked for it was that I play in a lot of chess tournaments, in which I would sometimes spend over than an hour waiting in between games. I had already beaten most of my GBA games and read a lot of my books, so I decided to get the DS for its new games. Also, a friend of mine had one and I loved the touch screen.
It was made by Nintendo. I don't think I even knew what it really was supposed to be like or what games were on it until, like, 3 days before I bought it.
Of course, then my brother used the DS money I gave to my mum to buy a PS2, and the DS went untouched for over a month.
For the DS, I really was content with the GBA. Embarrassingly, the selling-point was probably Nintendogs, which was the only DS game I was interested in, at the time.
For the DSi, the selling POINT was my DS phat (or a specific point on my phat). My DS phat's hinge broke, so I decided to get a DSi.
Well for me it was today. I was at Gamestop and a guy came in to sell his but it was missing a piece of the serial # sticker so they couldn't take it in. I asked the guy what he wanted for it and he said "ten bucks and it's yours" (they said they give 20 in cash for the phats). Well I don't use handhelds very much but since I have to go to the doctor a lot anymore I figured, "what the hell?" So I handed him a ten, then picked up Spectrobes Beyond the Portals and Sonic Chronicles of the Dark Brotherhood for 4.98 each at Target. Not a bad way to spend a twenty.

I love this question, made me finally make an account so I could post. (Hi, all, by the way)
When the DS was out, I wasn't much into gaming at all, except a PC game here and there. I thought I had outgrew video games for good or something. I got a DS originally for one reason: Zelda. I had played (and adored) Wind Waker on my Wii, and as soon as I heard a direct sequel was coming out for the DS, I had to buy a DS. If I recall, I actually bought my DS about 6 months before Phantom Hourglass actually came out and a little thing I did not expect happened while I was waiting: I fell in love with the DS!
I couldn't tell you what it is specifically, but I just find it FUN, plain and simple. Something about the variety of games are among the best I've ever seen on a system. I don't care about graphics, haven't in years. I love the DS because it has good, fun games. I've had an Xbox 360 for about a year. I have it hooked up to a big HD TV, and I have a whopping 2 games. I have over 50 DS games. It's just a great little system.
I know I am crazy for this, but I have a DS Lite, DSi, and I will be getting (Via a trade in of my DSi) a XL. I do love the DS, but I hope that's the last iteration for awhile. Heheh. I game at home pretty much 100% of the time, so I want those bigger screens!
Anyway enough rambling. =)
PS. You can imagine my joy last year at E3 when they announced ANOTHER DS Zelda game. I was like...Life is good. That of course was Spirit Tracks, which I finally finished this week, actually.

I bought a NDS because I'm starting to travel more and I wanted something portable to help me pass the time in airports. I don't think I'll get a DSi because I really do enjoy the GBA slot and I'm steadily building up a library of some classic GBA RPGs. There are a couple of DSiWare games which have caught my eye, but for me it does not justify the purchase of a DSi.

I bought the DS mainly thanks to G4's Nintendo DS Day coverage. The games looked fresh, touch screen intrigued me, portable 3D was finally here IMO and I just wanted it BADLY.
The DSi: I bought it for the extra features, and DSiWare since I'd be buying my own games instead of asking my dad to go to Gamestop with me.
DS- Because it existed. Seriousy, I picked up Super Mario 64 DS to give me something to do with it, but there actualy wasn't much I was interested in the DS for when I first got it.
DSi- Because Flipnote Studio existed. Well, that and my original DS had taken quite the beating over it's first four and a half years.
