Topic: noob question: does it take your eyes time to adjust to the 3d?

finally saw the 3ds in a store today and while i really liked the thing i found the 3d pretty hard to work with; pilotwings resort was on and with the slider all the way up it was a mess, instead of increasing the depth the image just seemed to be broken with some doubling. granted this was locked into a store display so it was hard to angle it right, but i squirmed a little and still couldn't make sense of it.

the slider 'sweet spot' for me was maybe 1/3 of the way up which seemed pretty low to me, anything over half became unviewable. did any of you 3DS'ers have this problem at first? knowing how new glasses can take a few days to adjust to, did your eyes get more comfortable with the 3D as you went on? or is pilotwings resort just a bad example for 3d?

No, that never happened to me.

3D is best viewed when...

1. you look at it straight on.
2. you are about 8+ inches away.

I've always have been able to become accustomed to 3D on the spot, so I never really had that big of a problem. From your description, though, it sounds like the unit was just in too weird a position to really get in the sweet spot, so that's probably your issue.

I'm pretty sure I think I'm funnier than I really am.

I think the other posts are right. You probably couldn't get the right position and viewing angle on the display model. However, I have found that the more I play the more I have become accustomed to the 3D. I started with the slider about 1/3 up also and have gradually been able to increase it to about 2/3 up over the past couple of weeks. The effect changes with different games also. I don't think you'll be disappointed when you get your own 3DS though.

i definitely would have held it closer if the display would have let me, it was probably two feet away. i was impressed with how good it looked when the 3D was just right though, wuhoo island looked every bit as good as wii sports resort (not that it was too impressive in the first place), makes me really want to see what mercenaries looks like.

I went to best buy, and it took me forever to find it... I had to get really close, and ajust the slider just right.

But now I've got my own and it seems perfectly fine!

Romulux I felt the same way at the display at best buy when I first seen it. Its a whole lot different when its in your hands. Pilot wings is a rough one since its real heavy on the 3d depth. When I first seen it I was a little unimpressed with the whole 3d aspect but it really does work well. Yes some times its hard to stay in the sweet spot but not to bad at all. If you have the money to spend I highly recommend you get it. What game or games were you thinking about? I have six of the launch games and will help in any way if you like!

Pilotwings Resort seems to have trouble when you push the slider all the way up. For that game, I put it at halfway but Lego Star Wars III and SSFIV I'm fine with it being all the way up as I don't see double images in those games compared to PR.

But yes, after awhile, you will get used to it- I posted a thread about seeing things "pop out" when you're on the computer or reading text. It's like your eyes turn to mush. I'm fine now though lol

Yes, eyes do have to adjust to the 3D. Even then you may still notice some ghosting when your eyes lose focus. This happens to me when I stop being "in the zone." When I first got my 3DS I had some minor headaches. When I got around to turn the system off, 2D images even looked a little funny, from my PC to my poster on the wall. I'm glad those issues passed.

YES. I'm still not sure I ever acclimated (played the most, and the longest individual sittings, shortly after getting the console and not much since), but I had the floaty-text syndrome on virtually anything that wasn't the 3DS for days after starting to use it. Everything just seemed off for a few days....now I seem to be able to switch between 3d/non-3D screen (both top-bottom screens on 3DS and between 3DS/PC screen) without any trouble, but it's been a while.

@Romulux - I had the same issue with the display unit at 2 feet away, but when I got closer to the screen that wasn't a problem (though, I also liked about 1/3rd best when I was playing around with Pilotwings, more than that seemd unnecessary to me, but it looked fine, no double vision or anything). It was uncomfortable to play that way, because the demo unit was at 8 year old height. You may just want to go back and try to mess around with it a bit to see if you can find the sweet spot.

It did feel a little weird for my eyes, but I get headaches from some 3D movies too after about an hour or so.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

i'm waiting for ocarina of time and RE mercenaries next month. i'm not in any doubt about whether i want to buy a 3ds, i just can't justify doing it until there are games to play on it (unless i want to have it around just to look at... it's been hard to hold back!). the launch ones don't float my boat so far.

i wonder if the lighting in best buy also could screw it up. at home in a darker environment it'd probably be a lot better. i was surprised by how small the thing was in person, the photos made me think it'd be bigger. it felt like a nice little mini-snes controller.

As long as my head is right in front of the DS, adjustment to 3D is instantaneous.

Romulux I'm pretty sure if you just give the system at the store a little tug it will pop out of the display. Its corded to the display so know one can steal it. Give it another shot. Mine came right out and it was much easier to play. It cracks me up watching rather tall people bending over to play the dumb thing. It should have some type of note on the display somewhere that tells you that but none of them do for whatever reason. Maybe they want you to bend over or something. I know you said that none of the launch games float your boat but when you get a chance ghost recon is excellent. Street fighter is the real deal as well but I suck at fighting games. Pilot wings is a lot of fun as well but I would wait till that drops in price to 20 or something like that and give it a try. If you like racing games ridge racer is also a lot of fun but I just wish it had some online races I would kill at that game since racing games are my strong point.

It only took me a short time to get used to the 3D; about a minute. Keep in mind Pilotwings is known to make you lose focus in full 3D, so my optimal setting for that specific game is about 3/4 of the way up.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

Quite. My eyes are quite sensitive to 3D, which I don't mind because I can see it fully at the lowest setting (next to 2D that is)

Hey, quick question:
Does it seem like the level of the depth slider really affects how much depth there is, or does it just seem like once teh 3D is on, its on?
