I'm pretty sure I've heard a reviewer from NL be skeptical about a game before it was released because of the publisher.

Without question we're nervous about developers who have underwhelmed us in the past, and excited about new titles from those who make the games we enjoy. Why wouldn't we be? We want to have fun, too.

But rest assured that every review takes into account that particular game's merits and demerits. We may mention the developer or other games in order to provide a frame of reference for the reader, but no game gets dismissed or praised on the strength or weakness of the developer alone. We will always evaluate a game for what it is.

While we're guessing the score that Phil will assign to a game we're not even sure he's reviewing, I'm guessing 6/10. That is, if the game's excellent presentation wins him over as much as it did me. The rest of the game is nothing special.

Nintendo World Report gave it a 4.5/10. Said G&W inspired levels were poorly paced, and felt like a cr*ppy version of Donkey Kong. Said that the beat 'em up segments get really repetitive fast.

I'll still wait for NL's review, but it's not looking good.

Wow. I totally disagree! I think it's not only innovative but fun, and yeah, things can get repetitive but any game is like that if you analyze it to death. I think this is a great game so far, the old school levels along with the newer 3d levels integrate well together and i love how it all comes together. I still stand by my positive review and I highly recommend this to old school gamers like myself

That's your opinion, and you are more than welcome to it. I stand by my positive review. Let's see what NintendoLife has to say about it. I applaud this game, however, for it's original design and interesting mix of old and new, in a unique retro package A+!

Haha! Nope...just thought I'd jump into the discussion since it was about reviewing in general. This week I've got Kirby's Pinball Land and Sword of Hope II. I'm interested to see how this one pans out though!

I decided to bite the bullet on this game and purchase it. So far, I am having fun with Johnny Kung Fu. In my first attempt with the game I got to floor 11 before the game over screen reared its ugly head. Each time you lose 3 lives, you can either quit your game or continue by sacrificing 5 minutes off your 60 minute time window (to reach the top of the building).

With a game like this, I was worried that all of the progress I had made was gone, but there is a continue system after your initial 60 minutes expire. When I made it back to the main screen, there was a continue button which placed me at level 10 with the minutes I had at that checkpoint in the game (24). Thus, I can start from there and continue my way to the top, or I can start a new game and attempt a better run through the initial levels to have a lot more minutes for my next level 10 save point.

Also, I unlocked a game & watch style mini game I can access at any time from the main menu. Hopefully the game unlocks the beat em' up stages as well.

Found another review, this time from Canadian Online Gamers. They gave it a 4/10.

They said the game has style, and the G&W levels were very unique, but they said it becomes repetitive, as you eventually start replaying segments, just at a higher difficulty level. They also said that in the later areas, the difficulty is so high that it's entirely based on luck, instead of any attainable skill.

I usually don't play games until it starts repeating anyways, so this game is perfect for me. Short quick bursts. I'll make it up as far as I can go and stop eventually, but so far after playing it for the past few days I love it. I also activated the g&w mini game which can be accessed from the start of the game. I think this might be one of those games that different gamers score drastically different. With that said, I could see this game getting scored as high as a 7 and as low as a 4. I never go sorely by the scores given here at NL. I love many games that this site has scored poorly. It's all just a matter of taste. As far as presentation goes, though, this game takes the cake!

Don't worry, I'm not saying the game is bad (I haven't played it, so I can't make that judgement). I just figured people might like hearing about various reviews (I go to Metacritic every once in awhile to see if they have anything new in, and the two they currently have just happen to be negative). I first did it with Family Tennis 3D, and will try doing it with future eShop releases as well.

How are the people who bought this game finding it? I'm on the fence, because here it was given a bad review, but CGRundertow just reviewed it and really liked it. I really don't know what to do with this game

Don't get it. It has about five minutes worth of enjoyment, and from there it just gets worse and worse until you wish you have stopped after five minutes. There's a review in my signature if you want to more, but suffice it to say this game's charm and gameplay potential is destroyed by the artificial difficulty and lack of content.

The more I've played it, the less I like it. Originally I said the beat 'em up levels were fun and the game and watch inspired levels were hit or miss. I ammend both statements, each kind of level grows very tiresome over time. I also said I thought the game might be worth $1.99 if it ever goes on sale for that cheap. I take that back as well, it might be worth $1 but even then I'd have a hard time recommending it, it's just not a very good game imo. It's the only e-shop purchase I've made that I regret.

I agree.. I think the review was not how I perceived the game.. in my opinion it does get repetitive but it didn't bother me as much as some, not if you think of it like an arcade game like its meant to represent from back in the day.. I would give it a 6 or 7/10.
