Never apologize for your hobby. If people is offended that your hobby is different from theirs, tell them to go suck it.

That'll teach 'em for calling you childish!

Other people's opinions do matter if you have or want to have a social life.

Its best not to give others ammo to use against you.

Believe me, one's sheer existance is ammo enough. Worrying too much about that kinda stuff is only going to make you more likely to come off as weird...

...not that I'm good at taking that advice, but I'm already set in my ways...

I find it best to have a social life with people that support you rather than attacking your hobbies

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Doesn't matter. You still have to go to work, school or wherever. Some places aren't appropriate to stand out as an individual unless you have the charm and charisma to back yourself up.

That's kinda what I meant. If someone has the gall to call you out on something that isn't affecting anyone else negatively in anyway, they're the ones who are in the wrong, and there's nothing you can do to stop those kinds of people, since they're just asking for trouble...worrying about them is only going to give you gray hairs over nothing...

True, there's limits, but the only sensible one is when it actually affects someone else in a negative way. If you dressed like a clown and went out to a busy street, but just acted normally, you'd draw attention, but no one should actually have a problem.

Now if you started juggling in the middle of the street? That'd be a problem. (Though I'm sure there's a law and/or tractor trailer for that one)

A guy in a clown suit walking down the street wouldn't likely create enough of a disturbance to lead to a confrontation, but other people walking by would definitely look at him and think (or say to their friends) that the guy is a weirdo.

Which is not a problem. So long as they do anything or say anything to you, everyone's free to be a weirdo if they want. Being worried about whether or not people are going to think you're weird or not is ultimately pointless because we all have something that goes against other's personal norms.

Is worrying if strangers think you're childish for playing a video game childish?

That mentality is so outdated at this point. All I can say is to not give a crap and tell her to deal with it, and if she has a problem with it there's the door.

It's kind of baffling to me that someone would ridicule someone else's interests like that past high school. It's more childish than the actual act they're claiming to be childish.

This is perfect right here.

"Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."

Love this quote. Pretty much my feelings exactly on people obsessed with being perceived as an adult (and to an lesser extent, gender and what it means to be "Black"... but they're entirely different beasts so won't go into that). My measuring stick of "adulthood" ends at my late grandmother. She said her feelings honestly and bluntly, she did what she wanted to without seeking anyone's approval, and before she was disabled, she packed up and went wherever she wanted to go. And no one was telling her was too old to enjoy Disney films or be playing Toypop, Dr. Mario, and Legend of Kage either.

Well, the 3DS does look like it was designed by Fisher Price, so your girlfriend is partially correct.

If you play a sleek looking handheld like the Vita in public you will have girls crawling all over you.

A Vita? Do you want to get laughed at by other gamers?Or by everyone?

Not laughing per se but every time I've casually mentioned buying a Vita to someone I've gotten funny looks. Most of them had no idea wtf it was and the one person that did just wanted to know why l'd even bother lol. I'm kind of looking forward now to the puzzled/confused reactions I'll probably get once I play one in public.

Is playing a 3DS childish?

Absolutely not.

As others here have said, never be ashamed of your hobby. It's no more childish than reading a book or watching tv.
