Topic: Graphically, what % of performance is 3DS currently at?

A friend of mine and I were chatting today after having both played the Resident Evil demo. We're both pretty stunned with the graphics for the 3DS at the moment following Mario Land 3DS and Mario Kart 7, but RE has just taken it to a new level. We then got talking about how much better the graphics, if at all, could be in years to come since we are only in year 2 at the moment.

I have a feeling the 3DS is really only using about 30-50% of its capabilities at the moment. In 3 or 4 years, it wouldn't surprise me if we have quality that isn't too far off XBOX 360 (considering that Resident Evil looks good in only its second year).

What do we think?

I'm pretty sure it's using all it's capabilities at the moment. (By the way it's still in it's first year, year 2 starts March, or Feb. for Japan.) And a "public service announcement" to all the fools on the internet who think the following-- handhelds can't be HD this point in technology , unless you want them to be as big and heavy as a consle. I hear a bunch of jerks say, "Oh the 3DS has such bad graphics, the PSP is HD". Point 1, the PSP is NOT HD. Point 2, consles can not be HD, stated above. Just letting the PS360 fans know.
But yeah, I think the 3DS is using at least 85% of it's power graphic-wise.

Yeah, but those are different. They don't have extra space for the game data (the 3DS/DS/PSP does, which leaves no room for HD power), and apps are tiny. Plus the 3DS/DS/PSP all have to have room for the buttons, and their functions. Phones don't have all that, just room to make graphics pretty.

Yeah. I'd guess 3DS is at 75%. Don't expect 360 grade stuff, but expect it to get comparable.

its bad that there was a comparison between a game on the 3ds and a psp(maybe or a vita)the 3ds lost in graphics, but maybe the creators of the game wanted the psp to look better?

PSP has a 480 X 272 pixel screen. It's 4.3 in. The 3DS' upper screen has a 800 X 240 (400 X 240 per eye). The 3DS screen is 3.75".

Graphically the 3DS should be on the same level as the Wii. I get disappointed when I see how beautifully smooth and detailed games like Super Mario Land 3D and Resident Evil Revelations are and yet MarioKart 7 doesn't look as smooth as MarioKart Wii (in my opinion, still looks great but the tracks aren't as smooth as I feel like the 3DS is capable of). Hopefully Nintendo and other developers just keep on pushing the limits of the 3DS and bringing out its full potential.

I'd say probably about 70%, which is really great for a handheld I think its definitely at the same level as the wii, if not higher cus of 3D!

It's always a while before developers reach the true graphical peak of any system.

60%?

Really? I think MK7 has better graphics than SM3DL and I think its graphics are pretty close to MKW.

If your talking about Revelations, (The best looking game on 3DS) I'd say about 75%. Most games are probably using around 60% though.

As Nintendo Life said in their Mario Kart Wii Review, it looks like Ninty put "sheen" on the game, but ended up making it look worse graphicly. And btw, it wasn't me who said the PSP was HD. Seriously, about 50 fanboys on IGN, Gamespot, and other sites think their handheld is "HD". IT IS NOT HD, FOOLS! Rage quit

@grossemariofan

its not he but the illusion of hd. unlike nintendo Sony doesnt cheap out on the screen tech. stuff like the oled and pixel density makes some mighty fine graphics.

but yeah the 3ds is a prety weak system pure spec wise. but who cares.

I like the "glowing" look of Mario Kart Wii, but I also love the flatter, more "matte" look of Mario Kart 7. However, one track they have in common--Maple Treeway--looks far better with the bloom effects and lighting on the Wii, in my opinion. With the Koopa level, on the other hand, it's a toss-up, with both looking very impressive yet different.

@shingi_70 you left out the part where they cheaped out on having an extra awesome dimension without glasses though.

Not only does the 3DS come with an SD card, but it also happens to come pre-installed with one, additional dimension.

You do realise that the 3DS has to process the graphics for both the left & right eye meaning it's actually doing about 150% of the work that the Wii has to do for the same game. Plus I personally think the graphics on MK7 are a little better & have more texture to them... seriously go back to a texture heavy track like Mushroom Gorge and I think MK7 is a LOT better.

From all that I've read (assuming that at least 80% of the things I've read on the net are true), games developers could make a 3DS game that makes the Wii look like a 16bit nightmare BUT inorder to do that they'd have to drop 3D altogether. Can you imagine a developer/publisher brave enough to do that? It's bad enough Sega didn't give us the Sonic Rush/Sonic Adventure version of Generations some of us were after.
