So, the official site has a decent amount of information on classes, characters, streetpass, etc.
It looks like this game retains the guild card system, and actually expands it in certain ways. "The characters attached to the exchanged Guild Card may appear in events within the labyrinth. Perhaps you’ll encounter your friend’s character there...? It seems there will be various events that result in obtaining ingredients, items, and even helpful tips from them...!" Seems like a really neat use of the streetpass feature!
Another interesting feature. "Adventure Episodes: The mini events that occur in the labyrinth allow you to gain experience points, depending on what you experienced during those events. Each mini event now comes with a title and summary to further immersion into the game experience."
So, I've just made the headlong jump into emulation and have started up 7th Dragon 2020, a sister game series to Etrian Odyssey (same director and some similar gameplay concepts). One thing that really stands out: you can actually see your characters when they attack. They slide in for their normal attacks and skills get fully animated with dynamic camera angles. I'm not sure why EO hasn't done anything like that, because it looks nice and is something I wish it did (Persona Q kinda did it already).

@Spoony_Tech I'll miss the overworld as well, although I do like how they're trying to go back to the style of EO I and II with this game. No more crazy class/subclass combinations or grimoires. Probably no weird dungeon gimmicks like in 2U. Just simple, classic EO.
@CrazedCavalier Probably because of the throwback nature of the series. The whole mapping function was calling back to people who would draw their own maps of Wizardry dungeons and such. You never actually see your characters in those games. It takes retro design sensibilities and combines them with modern, more sophisticated gameplay systems.
Edit: PWNED. I retract my clearly fallacious statement.
@Ralizah 7th Dragon III on the 3DS has Etrian-level customization (if anything, EOV's expanded color pallet and character feature editing was directly inspired by it) and still kept the character models-- it's mostly just texture editing.

@CrazedCavalier I acknowledge your superior level of knowledge on this matter.
Still, as I said, it's probably to keep with the retro thing the series has going for it. Probably the same reason you can download an FM variant of the game's OST.
@Ralizah Yeah, you can switch between FM and the normal versions of the OST and EOV lets you avoid selecting voices for player characters. So why not let you enable/disable attack animations in the same manner?

@Tsurii I agree with the wallet. This is gaming overload but it's what we wanted for the last 4 years right!? I'm going to have to pick and choose as I don't have that kind of time to play all that I want.

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.
@Ralizah I'm dl'ing here in a bit but I to won't play till tomorrow. I count at least 10 games I need till the end of the year this being one of them. This is crazy and I though 2013 was the best. This year beats it hands down already.

@Spoony_Tech 2017 is one of the best years in gaming I've ever seen. Started off strong with a slew of fantastic Playstation 4 games and then shifted into high gear with the release of Breath of the Wild and the Nintendo Switch. It has just been non-stop fun all year, and I'm going to spend the majority of 2018 playing catch up with all of the excellent 2017 releases I haven't had time to dig into.
