Hmm I always thought I paid around $400 NZD for my Wii closer to launch... maybe not :S. It still could be a lot cheaper. It's not exactly cutting edge hardware...
Exactly Kirk, this little "six week study" seems to have missed the point of the games entirely (and several commenters here too). If you're young and playing the games to get "smarter" then yes, you are right to have given up... Especially if you're not enjoying it. Brain Training is simply a way to keep your brain stimulated. Which IS beneficial in the long run.
I'd assume that would be the solution to the chord problem. Define a chord and just play the root note or something (maybe). Might not be so great on the fly, but it's just for fun anyway.
Actually sounds pretty cool! (Note: the original games other than Sonic 1 didn't really sound like this - it's been slowed down to what it would have been like in 50Hz).
@Ren: So what... do nothing about it? I don't care if it's likely or not. Sitting around and doing nothing makes it even less likely they'll take notice. If they want to make a reputation around being backward and biased then I'm not sticking around to be a part of it (the digital download scene that is... I couldn't bare to live without Nintendo games ).
This is just plain unfair. I mean not only do we pay more (taking exchange rates into consideration), but we get a vastly inferior product. Nintendo is laughing in the face of progress. Not a good look for a company that prides itself on being forward thinking and innovative. Something has to be done about this eventually. Do you think it would be at all acceptable if in a couple of generations time... we STILL have 50Hz?? it's already bad enough now...
This is why it's great that Nintendo Life have done an article like this. From the comments you can see that some people never realised they were playing an inferior product. The more people are made aware of this problem, the more likely something will have to be done. Nintendo can keep quiet about it and hope that the general public won't notice; but the internet can be a powerful thing. Word just has to get out, and it can have a real impact.
Case in point (forgive me if I get this wrong - just going off what I can remember): Just recently when Cadbury started using Palm Oil in their chocolate here in NZ, there was a huge public backlash - it got all over the news, and eventually, due to rapidly decreasing sales, they were forced to take it out. Don't underestimate the power of the consumer .
I hope we can all be more vocal about this (we as in, gaming sites ), Nintendo has to take notice eventually if they're getting bad press. They can't just keep giving rubbish escuses. We're not going to buy that.
Edit: Great! Just joined the group. Hope it'll be successful.
Thankyou for writing this! I'm not usually one to get really angry over something gaming related. But this was just going too far. I sent a few angry emails to Nintendo a couple of years ago. Of course all I ever got in response was "we want to be true to the original experience". Which only made me more frustrated of course and I haven't bought a VC game since.
This should never have happened in the first place... treating paying customers like idiots. I decided to PAY for these games, rather than go the easy road of emulation. And this is the "quality" Nintendo experience I get??
If that Wosblog thing is true, then I think it would do more harm than good for Nintendo. Personally I think it puts them in a very negative light as a company that has no compassion, and doesn't care if it ruins someone's life. As you can see here:
The results of the poll indicate that most people don't think it's right. Which according to Wosblog it isn't... Doesn't seem very clever really. Gives off the wrong messages. Although maybe not to 90% of the blindly loyal fanboys here who obviously think that ruining someone's life over a petty crime would be a good laugh.
The game I thought I'd never see... But now I'm kind of worried... if they mess this one up, then they mess up a quality series! I already think they could have done quite a bit more visually... I mean, sure I thought the same when I first saw NSMBW - and changed my mind when I actually got to play it (some of the levels were beautiful). But I don't really have the same faith for Sega anymore. Just because a game is 2D doesn't mean it can't look stunning. I'm not exactly holding my breath... but if it gets good reviews it'll be a must buy .
Actually, now that I think about it, it's the MUSIC that will make or break it for me.
They've destroyed Sonic's name so throroughly this last decade (alright, I did like a few of the handheld games...) that it's going to take something pretty special for me to forgive them even a little bit.
I take it you're all environmental experts then? Some of you guys are just sad... "Oh no, something bad was said about Nintendo! Lets attack whoever said it because they must be wrong. Just because!"
Hmm, I'd sure love an "episodic" Sonic side scroller on WiiWare or something. At least I think I would... It's amazing how they can ruin just about anything these days. I wish they'd stop trying to make him "cool", it reeeally limits his appeal. Also take a page out of Link's book and ditch the talking.
I agree with Aonuma here. Also he didn't totally rule out the possibility of a remake somewhere along the line. I believe he just said they'd need a very good reason or a great idea to bring the old games forward or something like that, before they'd consider it.
I've bought the games more than once before... I can do it again ! Assuming they're quality ports, and they don't mess them up somehow. Great news for me... Although I'd prefer more games... (yeah, Mean bean Machine).
Well personally I've owned a Wii since release (in NZ) and I think, now I've got an HDTV, it's about time I bought a PS3. Far better off with a PS3 than a Blu-Ray player of pretty much the same price... besides, I've got loads of games to catch up on (about half the console's lifetime worth).
Anyway obviously the Wii has to lose momentum eventually. Not EVERYONE in the world is going to buy one, and so many have sold already. This guy's just trying to make a story out of nothing.
I never really understood what was so special about this game... Maybe it was special back in the day? Wouldn't have a clue... didn't have a SNES back then. But is it really all that great now?
I think it's pathetic the people thinking it should be left out just because it caters to "casuals". Why should it bother you if you're so great and hardcore that you'll likely never see it? What difference does it make if some lesser skilled gamers get a chance to make it through the game? It's just being selfish.
I'm sure there are other reasons that the game shouldn't include the feature but that one is just poor. Some "hardcore" players really need to get over themselves...
Personally I play sport for the competition, and games for the entertainment. They're two very different things. If you want to play for the challenge (I do) then great! If you just want to have some fun... regardless of whether you win or lose, cheat or not, there's nothing wrong with that either. It's a game.
He's going to stay without a voice. That's the part I like. I hope he means forever. I think I recall some review of Twilight Princess, might have been Gamespot, criticizing the game for it's lack of voice acting. Which apparently is a necessity in this day and age... I couldn't believe it...
It would lose so much of it's quirkiness if they added voices. The weird little noises the characters make when you speak to them are perfectly fine thankyou .
That's pathetic. There are so many awful games on the shelves here... I'm sure the same is true in the UK. Everyone should go in and ask for the game at these stores (whether they actually need it or not ), so they can see their stupidity.
Heh well I guess that's a point, people are spoilt these days!
"Back in my day son, we played on screens THIS small!"
I suppose not everyone will be as tolerant as us.
Oh, and as for the actual article... don't like it if it's true. Sounds like it would be huge :S, and I just can't imagine who they're aiming it at. What's the point if supposedly in the next couple of years they're going to be coming out with a true successor?

Re: New Zelda Aims for Easier Controls, Big Surprises
After seeing Galaxy 2 I have complete faith that Nintendo will not let this be anything other than utterly brilliant.

Made a little size comparison:

Personally I don't think that looks too small. It is a handheld after all.
Just add a simple border or something to tidy it up.
