Sega has announced that it will be bringing the first four Sonic the Hedgehog games to the Nintendo DS in March 2010.
The Sonic Classic Collection will feature Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. All four games originally appeared on Sega's 16-bit Mega Drive/Genesis console in the '90s.
We've had Sonic collections in the past so this news is hardly going to set heats aflutter, but the addition of bonus content and the ability to "save anywhere" might entice a fair few Sega fan-boys (James, we're looking at you) to make a purchase.

Sweet! Portable Sonic Classics! I thought it was going to be another ,in the long line of many, horrible new game.
Awesome!! Instant-buy for me!!
Is it possible to have too many Sonic the Hedgehog compendiums?
Yes. Yes it is. Already have all these games in various forms, so Im'ma pass, if it's all the same to you guys.
What are they gonna use the second screen for? Probably a big pointless Sega/Sonic logo.
I am a big Sonic fan! Yes, I will like to get this when it comes next year.
Meh...
...couldn't it be the Advance series instead?
Or maybe as well?
Wicked! It has save states. So cannot wait for March.
I already own Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the PS3, but being able to play these classics on my DS sounds sweet...may buy it in March.
Not terribly excited. Not just cause I knew beforehand but it's just that the collection could be a bit stronger.
Lame. In other news, Sega has more or less nothing besides Sonic to cash in on these days.
If I can use a virtual lock-on feature that links Sonic & Knuckles to the other three (including Sonic 1 cuz of the secret bonus stage), I might be interested. Otherwise, I already got at least the first two on my PSP.
Hmm. Yeah, adding the Advance series would be a good idea. A few unlockable Sonic Team games like Ristar and Chu Chu Rocket would be nice too. I'll probably pick this up...
Just did the math, and including tax it should sell around the same price as it would if you downloaded them all on the VC. I hope the bonus content is good.
I'll probably get it. I'd rather they port Sonic CD, but this'll do.
I'll get it once it's cheaper, but only if there's some sweet extras. If it has a museum of sorts (like in Sonic Gems) then I'll be getting it.
You know what'd be sweet? If it had online, with one person being Tails and the other Sonic, but Tails now had his own screen, instead of having to be in the same place as Sonic.
OMG Awesomeness!
Umm...pathetic. Four games? No thanks. I already have Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection anyway.
Mehhhhhh...
That's my expert opinion.
It'll be nice to finally play these games on the DS (legally)!
Actually... I think I'm going to buy this.
Yeah.
I'll probably pick this up, as I don't own my Sonic Mega Collection on my PS2............. but this should include MORE sonic retro games (even to include advance series maybe?!).
I have Sonic TH 2 downloaded from the VC though.
I'm picking this up just because I really would like handheld Sonic, and these games haven't been on any other bazillion games or anything. That would be just silly, right?
Will it let us play sonic 3 and knuckles? If not then no and besides I prefer playing on my TV anyway. Also I think Sonic and Knuckles is supposed to be released for the VC before the end of the year so I'm probably not gonna get it.
I think I'll get it, being the first time I'll get to play these games on the go
How fun!
Awesome, I never got the chance to play the games before. So this would be a perfect opportunity to finally get my hand on those games.
Already got the first one on my iPod with full save functionality, so I might not buy this. also, the others dont appeal to me as much as the first one does.
Make it Megaman and I'm sold... or Castlevania... or Metroid or Fire Emblem or Mother... crud, Sonic is the only one who's had a dozen Collection games, if anyone else did it it'd be a breath of fresh air, but it's just Sonic AGAIN so it's stale...
I like it, especially if they throw in Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles... possibly that unreleased version of Sonic the Hedgehog & Knuckles that got scrapped... but so far I'm on board.
But I concur with BlueBandanaJake. Mega Man (classic), Castlevania (through SotN), Metroid, Mother, or even Mario would be much-wanted too.
AWESOME!
I already used to own the ps2 collection, and now have Sonic 1 & 2 on VC. Still I might get this just because I seem to get more of a chance to play games on my ds.
Of course I want all four Sonic games on my DS! I don't own the Mega Collection and I don't have any of these original games downloaded yet. This is absolutely perfect for me.
I have 1 through 3 on Virtual Console and plan on getting Sonic and Knuckles when that ones released as well. Not sure if I really have any reason to get this myself because of that, obviously.
As long as it's not over 20 bucks, then this
is definitelymight be worth it. I don't own the Mega Collection because I heard it has the same amount of bad games as it does good ones."Is it possible to have too many Sonic the Hedgehog compendiums?"
Yes. I'm pretty sure the original Sonic the Hedgehog game is in the running (pun not intended) for "most ported console game of all time," and the other three probably aren't that far behind.
They also better have this at a discount price straight from the get-go. Portability and save states are nice and all, but when for the same thirty dollars you can net the 360/PS3 Genesis Collection with these games and 45 others, you really have to question how much these four games are worth.
When this game comes out, it'll probably be about $20-30. I dropped $20 for Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, which has more than 40 games in it I believe. Though I'll say it's good that they've been made portable for the DS.
I'll be getting this. Can't have enough classic Sonic
I think I'll be getting this even though I sold Mega Collection for GCN a while back.
No thanks. Just another sonic collection.
While the abilitly to save anywhere is definitely a plus (the one thing I hate about old-school Sonic games is the lack of a save feature), I wouldn't buy this. SMC is the only Sonic anthology I need.
Now this looks like something I might get!
Pass. I already own Mega Collection for the Cube. One with the Advance series would be welcome though.
I never cared for classic Sonic. I had the Collection + and eventually traded it in. Well-done levels, just not that fun for me.
THANK GOD! I remember when I got the Sonic and Knuckles collection for pc when I was younger and man is this going to rock!
Plus, saving anywhere sounds good, but what could they possibly add as bonus content that's NOT already been done?
Multiplayer like sonic 3 online?
AWESOME IDEA.
instead of porting this how about the advance series or another rush game.
Choir Music plays in the backround
Finally, my prayers have been answered. No longer do I have to find myself yearning to play Sonic 3 & Knucles each and every time I leave the house. Now Sonic and I will never be apart! EVER!
Hugs Sonic plushie...then remembers he doesn't have one, and wonders what the f*** he just hugged
I knew there was a reason why I hadn't bought any Sonic games on VC...now I can just get all 4 on one DS card!
HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sure, I own Sonic Mega collection, Sonic the Hedgehog Genisis, and Sonic Gems, but ON THE DS!!!!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They need to have the lock-on masterpiece, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, available in the collection.
@Bulbasaurus Rex
According to the rating, they should be included. Chances are they'll be unlockables, like in every other Sonic Collection.
You have the option of playing S3&K and Knuckles in Sonic 2.
Sonic collections - the new Street Fighter 2...
Sounds cool! I do wish they'll make something like this for the PSP. Sonic on the go!
Well, it`s true that there are tons of Sonic collections, but it would be great to play it portable. Might get this if it`s cheap and if it doesn`t show speed issues like the sonic classic for GBA
Now if only a Sonic compendium actually included Knuckles' Chaotix... Or SegaSonic the Hedgehog (the arcade game).
This could be a roadblock for Sonic & Knuckles Virtual Console release in North America and Europe. It's official, it's not coming out in either region until after the collection stop selling.
will pass this, already got all of em on virtual console
Another Sonic Collection? Lame!
When is there gonna be a collection that focuses solely on Sega's great arcade games?
I've bought the games more than once before... I can do it again ! Assuming they're quality ports, and they don't mess them up somehow. Great news for me... Although I'd prefer more games... (yeah, Mean bean Machine).
only 4 ill pass
As someone who's been looking for a good way to get into old-school Sonic game, I'm pretty excited about this.
@SuperSmashBros.Fan1999: you really need to stop freaking out/making assumptions about what will and won't come to the VC.
I'd like a 2D Sonic collection of:
Sonic 1-3 & K
Sonic CD
Knuckles Chaotix
Tails Adventure
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
Ristar
Sonic Advance 1-3
Sonic Battle
those 13 games combined would make my buy them all again (especially cause I'm missing 3 of them...). But it'll never happen.
It's cool, and it's pretty sweet with the save feature for the DS (every portable game needs save states imho). However, I think I'll stick to playing them in full 16 bit glory on my Genesis. If any of the cartridges bite the dust (or the Genesis, though I'd probably buy another Genesis if that happened), I'll just buy the games on the VC or get the GCN collection. If the GCN disk has Sonic CD, that's the way I'll go. These games are meant to be played on the TV!
Now Sonic Advance Collection I'd buy for DS in a heartbeat. I have Sonic Advance 2, but I have a DSi and the GBA is an original unbacklit one, so I'd totally prefer a DS collection (or DSi VC) than playing on my GBA.
Poor old Sonic has become the definition of the term 'cash-cow'
You know what they should do, seeing how he's obviously botched his 3D reputation...
Move him to the download services and just make 2D scrollers. They still make good ones as seen in the portable space, and a 'Sonic the Hedgehog 4' would generate a good amount of hype both for the game and the service.
Sonic CD would be a welcome addition to this package.
Hmm, I'd sure love an "episodic" Sonic side scroller on WiiWare or something. At least I think I would... It's amazing how they can ruin just about anything these days. I wish they'd stop trying to make him "cool", it reeeally limits his appeal. Also take a page out of Link's book and ditch the talking.
I have the MegaDrive versions, I have the Mega Collection versions. Still, portable Sonic. Already want it.
Provided it's not quite so much of a train wreck as Sonic Genesis on GBA was.
Excellent, I've wanted SEGA to do this comp on the DS for ages...
I am a big fan of the original game and as mentioned above, the GBA version was a horrid port, lets hope they dont mess this one up.
Whats a guy got to do to see Knuckles Chaotix rereleased? T.T
Still, how about making a zillion compilations of the Advance trilogy? ;P
I will definitely buy this once it becomes available in the UK, Can't wait!
On one hand, it's nice to see a portable Sonic collection of the four main Genesis games with a save feature. Then again we've already seen past compilations and re-releases for download, hence Sega's blue blur having always been the cash cow. For the time being, I'll just wait and see...
Well, I might as well get it. That way, I can play Sonic on the road.
By the way, I have all four games in their original Sega Cartridges.
Yeah, this is a day one purchase for me, despite having the games in about four hundred different combinations over the years. I do wonder how the double screen aspect will work, though. Roll on March!
A no go for me. I have the Mega Collection already, and I have Sonic Advance for all my portable Sonic needs.
I've pre-ordered my copy! Also I hope Sega won't rob Nintendo gamers out of the new 2D game!
Well, never owned a Sonic collection but I have played each separately.
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic & Knuckles
Well, never owned a Sonic collection but I have played each separately.
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic & Knuckles
If they could pull this off for DS, why couldn't there be a DSi VC yet?
@Sylverstone
Was it really necessary to do a double post there?
Feh. Played through these guys like, 8 times already.
SEGA would've been smarter to put Dimps lesser known, but far superior, handheld Sonics together in a collection for the first time. Sonic Pocket Adventure is supposed to be great. Sonic Advance was meh, but Sonic Advance 2 and 3 were AMAZING Sonic games. Also Sonic Rush and Rush adventure.
They should've definitely lumped some of those together.
Also, I suppose we're not getting another Sonic Chronicles then?
i know what to get my bro this and also starfox
i say there are NOT enough sonic games for DS. i mean really, they havent even came up with shadow the hedgehog for DS really, think about the DS lovers
GO DS LOVERS
