The main thing that bothers me about the gamepad is the inability to turn the screen off. That makes no sense for games that actually utilize it, zombiu for example (One of my favorite games of all time by the way - just needed a little polishing for the sequel that unfortunately isn't going to happen). But games like New Super Mario where the main screen is just cloned. I can turn off my tv if I want to play on the gamepad, but can't turn off the gamepad if I want to play on the TV. Which is all the time - the TV screen is superior quality and resolution. Also the gamepad doesn't work reliably far away, so I can't play in my bedroom across the house, defeating the purpose.
I was never a fan of the main game; I only played the 3ds exclusives. I loved them because they were more like Spyro. Even though the fourth 3ds Skylanders game was no longer a platformer, I loved the uniqueness and variety of gameplay. I expect the same this year. Oh and Gamestop needs to stop releasing Eons Elite. My bank account is crying. Even though I've never used them, the presentation is amazing.
Friends of Mineral Town was amazing. After that the series died for me. The game didn't translate well to 3D. I'm not sure exactly what it is. Maybe maneuvering the 2D grids with full analog, or just poor game design in general. Speaking for the gamecube games and the first 3DS game, the town felt totally lifeless.
I don't think people who don't have a new 3ds XL realize just how good the "new 3d" is. LOZMM3D was the most immersive game I've ever played. It's like I was really in that world, I forgot I was playing a video game. Of course you need good ear buds for the full effect. I looked at the whole 3ds library and was dissapointed in the fact that the only other 3d adventure was OOT. Note: 3d in the sense that there's fully 3d modeled characters in a fully 3d modeled world, with 360 degrees of movement of the characters. Xenoblade will hopefully fill that void. I can't even play Wii games anymore because they just look bad. Maybe the wiiU upscales Wii games but I haven't tried. Therefore I'll be buying this. Also, why can't you sit in your living room and play 3ds? I did that for Majoras Mask as I'd play for up to 6 hours straight.
As an aside, what happens if you place a new 3ds cartridge in the old 3ds?
I played this on PC originally with a X360 controller. That dpad is terrible. I came back to it later with a Dualshock 4, which is my favorite controller (narrowly edging out GameCube). Much easier, though still brutally difficult. Unless you are naturally gifted, do a first run on easy mode, to learn the levels. If I didn't already own the game I'd get it on WiiU for comfortable living room play. Although I'm not sure exactly how the dpad compares to the others I mentioned, since I rarely use the gamepad dpad.
Interesting point about "open-world". I think of it as free to roam most of the outdoor map from the start. There may be locked areas, or areas you will get your @$$ handed to you if you go there, but you can go there if you want. Open world could have a very linear main storyline but it needs to have a lot of side tasks if you deviate. Recent examples are Lego City Undercover, Assassins Creed Black Flag. Then there's the GTA series, obviously. Some of the Zelda games qualify, like the original, or wind waker. Others like Majoras Mask or Skyward sword there is a very specific unlocking and progression through areas, so I wouldn't call them open world. Then you have games like Metroid Prime, which cleverly replace loading screens with doors that remain locked until the next area loads... Still, it never felt "open world" due to the doors separating areas.
I keep looking for this in stores cause I thought it released! I read a review - at the time it was just too limited and the graphics were blocky. Maybe the developers read that too and went back to make improvements/
I own the PSP KH, which I've heard is the prequel to this one. I like it, but I agree with the overall tedious nature of the game. In the PSP version though, once you clear a room, it's clear and you can explore... Sounds like this one enemies infinitely respawn. This will be a bargain bin game for me.
I remember when everyone was like LOLOL they will probably just release a 3DS XL next year after the colossal flop of the last XL. Then the second circle pad add on came out, giving rise to redesign rumors.
But no, they released a larger version of the exact same design, and are charging more for that. How does that make sense? Oh, and the circle pad pro will not work with it.
If you dont already own a 3ds, this is the obvious choice. But im talking about the loyal fans, the people who bought it soon after launch. I'm not buying the exact same thing again! Way to screw over your most loyal fans like you always do! I'm pretty sure I'm buying a used PS Vita today.
370 mb Is not much normally, however this Is Nintendo, and they can't spend a few dollars each per console to add more storage. This game is definitely too big for internal storage, and 1/4 of the provided SD card. I don't even think It's possible to buy a larger SD card and move my contents over to it. You get more club Nintendo coins for downloading, but I can't afford to lose all that space.
Really hope you can use the old skylanders. This has spawned a collecting bug in me, I have so many and 3/4 level packs. They will never leave their boxes of course. I look forward to a sequel to the best platformer on 3DS by far (Yes I have played through SM3DL, don't get me started on that).
May 22 for the US release. I am shocked by the few screenshots I've seen. You look at someting like Mario Kart 7, the graphics are much better than Wii quality. Then you look at this, and the graphics look like a direct port of RCT3. Somewhere in between N64 and gamecube. I pray to god the graphics look amazing in motion, but the lack of videos a week before release is not a good sign. If the stereoscopic 3D is amazing, I'll get it to ride the coasters. Otherwise... I'll only get RCT4 for PC (Graphics are way beyond PS3 quality).
Once again Nintendo doing something they should have done from the start, and acting like its this great new idea. Emulators have had this since the stone ages. I luch prefer playing on hardware though.
Brilliant strategy actually. Release original console so ugly you're forced to buy the upgrade in a year. see: ds phat. I almost guarantee I'll buy the new 3ds if they essentially contour it like this and have the second pad as part of the console itself. They literally have to due to the vita launch (which as a ps3 owner will probably buy as well)
Kid Icarus Uprising was going to be a bargain bin game for me... honestly it looks boring... but now I may need to preorder at Amazon just to get this 3d classing... brilliant marketing, I suppose.
Only game I have ever felt the need to speed run. I think it was under 2 hours and 20 minutes. You get special ending screens depending on how fast you go and how much collectables you got... and any combination of the two. The interesting thing about speed running is that you usually can't take the time to save.
I only spent coins last June because i needed to or they were gone. Now I can get things I actually want. And you know how game and watch ds games are something crazy like 1200 coins? I thought downloadable games (brand new games whereas game and watch is like twenty years old) would be like 4000 each. so this is great news.
They make Wii ware demos so hard to find hence I never get them. 3DS demos are worse, you willhave to drive to specific stores like you used to have to do with DS demos. Can we update with the times, please?
People don't seem to realize 3ds has had some good third party games. Not MINDBLOWING, but just good fun. Lego pirates I bought with the system at the launch of the eshop (just walked in toys r us at random and bought it - amazing), monkey ball is not as great as the originals but still good (wish it had monkey golf...) And most recently skylanders! I wish they could get more 3DSware, though.
Nintendo has had lacking 3rd party support on every console at launch. At least in the 2000s. the fact is you buy a Nintendo console to play Nintendo games on Nintendo hardware. If an occasionally great third party exclusive comes along (coughskylanders), then cool.
I don't care about any of this. give me an ACTUAL rpg (not paper mario bs) in 3D such as the one in mii plaza, only completely fleshed out with a huge story mode/quest. Don't care who develops it. Also those GBA games would be nice. Even though i played most of them.
20 dollars off at Target this week (all versions). Your review pushed me over the edge. the other version(s) look boring and I'm looking for the more classic spyro experience. Your review pushed me over the edge. and honestly dark spyro is mad cool.
Furthermore, it's driving me absolutely insane that I have NO control over the camera. Wow, I can lean it slightly right and left when they feel like allowing it. I was expecting like 8/10 reviews after playing this for ten minutes but instead I find "best game ever" everywhere. Why can't the touch screen be camera control, it's not really being used for anything. Third, why is B jump and Y action. I want it to be A jump and B action like every single mario game before this, and I can't change it? I'm so appalled right now I might return it.
I'm starting to think something is wrong with my 3DS because no one else commented on it. The control doesn't feel like true analog motion, it feels like playing a DS game on 3DS. I push the analog stick slightly and nothing happens. I push a little more and suddenly mario begins a fast walk. I push a little more, still a fast walk, then finally he runs when I push the entire way.
Same with direction, I push right and he moves right. I move slightly up but he continues right. So it's like he has 2 digital speeds and 16 digital directions, it's like a double d-pad rather than analog. ANYONE else notice this? It's making it unplayable since I can't go exactly where I want.
Finally buying this game. For 3DS. I've been suffering a lack of games that make me want to take my 3DS along with me at all times. Things that I can just play for a few minutes then put back in my pocket. It was between this and Alleyway for Gameboy... Sorry but a lot of game boy, even game boy color games just feel too outdated for me.
HTC EVO 3D is still pretty much the only other device doing 3D video. still, you can only watch them ON the device, so what's the point? I never take 3D videos anymore.
It's sad that Nintendo even allows such shovelware as these house games on their shop. It's also sad that said shovelware was allowed to use the house trademark! I'm having flashbacks to zelda cdi...
Asphalt 6 3D port would actually be worth buying for 3ds! HTC EVO 3D owner here. You can't play motion control in 3D mode (well you COULD tilt your head as you tilt phone, but gameloft chose not to allow it) so they resorted to on screen steering wheel. Not good. Physical buttons are needed for this game!
I don't like the fact that you can't move the camera! It's 3D so I want to be able to look wherever I want. I understand it's trying to bring in new users by always having the camera facing in one direction, but honestly if you don't understand 3D, the 3DS is not the system for you!!
Also, I hate when the camera randomly switches positions when I'm in the middle of running. Both mario galaxies did it a lot, and this one looks to do so as well.
I should comment as I've played gameloft games on the HTC EVO 3D. dont even think any other company has made 3D games for it. Anyway, the framerate Is slower than normal (I think 30) but CONSTANT. it never drops a frame. so in a game like asphalt 6, this is critical.
With runner its like it draws 27 frames then skips 3. Not a game breaker by any means, just a bit upsetting. Once you get the pacing of the game down it becomes even less of an issue.
The main point for me is that I never want to sit in one place for hours in front of my tv. turn the Wii on, turn the tv on, go to the game, wait foe it to load... Saga I just flip my 3ds open and start playing, then if I need to go somewhere close it. Then say I get to my destination, the doctor, open it up and continue right where I was.
Also, the motion control games on the wii made me feel sick. Accurate, but i ended up feeling like I was on a boat with constant rocking back and forth.
Unfortunate that runner chugs so much in 3D, the other games don't have that issue. I've turned the 3D off and tried the level again, It's smoother but the background interferes even MORE. Seriously, why have such an active background in most of these games, and the colors are often EXACTLY the same as the foreground. That's my main complaint with these games.
I meant /pretty/ (italics) good... I'm actually surprised a revised 3DS hasn't been announced yet, we're approaching 6 months since launch. That's about how long they have been waiting before announcing each DS revision! I expect it by April 2012.
Has to be a rumor. Nintendo devices always look pretty good, I'd never call them sexy but I've not seen anything just flat-out ugly since maybe the Virtual boy. The whole point of the touch screen is it can act as a second analog stick, and is much more ACCURATE than an analog stick, when programmed correctly!
I COMPLETEd my preorder for SAGA to fill the VOID in my 3ds game library. I might call it FATE that I should preorder from gamestop, but I will sit down and play until I BEAT them all. I don't need to be a RUNNER cause it's an online order + when I do need to use my car I can FLUX to the music as I drive. The music fills me down to my CORE. ...Do I win?
Also there is WAY too much going on in the background making it hard to see whats happening in the play area. 3D will help with that! But why not just have a stagnant, or even black background?
My bit trip virginity was just taken... downloaded flux demo. I love it, and the motion control is accurate but makes me feel sick to my stomach! Definitely getting saga! Still debating if the CD is worth the preorder. I just bought Pilotwings and Dream trigger from amazon, and am getting a few more games for my birthday! There's not enough time in a day for all this.
I never feel like playing Wii anymore. It's just a hassle and the games feel super outdated. Graphics DO matter now that everyone has a giant HDTV. Versus the 3DS where i can just open it up and pop a game in! I want th soundtrack CD though, I guess gamestop gets to suck my money out of me yet again. As for new content, it could be argued that SAGA is ENTIRELY new content, because it's in 3d
No one even KNOWS it can play EVERY gamecube game... not sure why they kept it in as long as they did! I still own all my gamecube games but rarely play them. Wii games tend to feel last-gen, which makes GCN games feel 2 gen's ago. Burnout 2 on occasion, that's pretty much it.

Re: Rumour: Analogue Stick Add-On for 3DS Revealed
Has to be a rumor. Nintendo devices always look pretty good, I'd never call them sexy but I've not seen anything just flat-out ugly since maybe the Virtual boy. The whole point of the touch screen is it can act as a second analog stick, and is much more ACCURATE than an analog stick, when programmed correctly!
Re: Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Limited Edition Details
20 dollars for that awesome controller. So in for 1. I have a motionplus dongle, but its so ugly... and now I'll have 2!
Re: BIT.TRIP COMPLETE and SAGA Trailer is Hard to BEAT
I COMPLETEd my preorder for SAGA to fill the VOID in my 3ds game library. I might call it FATE that I should preorder from gamestop, but I will sit down and play until I BEAT them all. I don't need to be a RUNNER cause it's an online order + when I do need to use my car I can FLUX to the music as I drive. The music fills me down to my CORE. ...Do I win?
Re: Feature: BIT.TRIP SAGA vs. BIT.TRIP COMPLETE
Also there is WAY too much going on in the background making it hard to see whats happening in the play area. 3D will help with that! But why not just have a stagnant, or even black background?
Re: Feature: BIT.TRIP SAGA vs. BIT.TRIP COMPLETE
Re: Feature: BIT.TRIP SAGA vs. BIT.TRIP COMPLETE
Re: New Wii is No Smaller Than Before
No one even KNOWS it can play EVERY gamecube game... not sure why they kept it in as long as they did! I still own all my gamecube games but rarely play them. Wii games tend to feel last-gen, which makes GCN games feel 2 gen's ago. Burnout 2 on occasion, that's pretty much it.
