The box may be a bit bigger than this

When Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure became a sales hit, surprising some with the scale of its success, a follow-up was inevitable. The announcement of Skylanders Giants duly followed, and although Wii was confirmed as a platform the vague description of 'handheld and mobile devices' left a 3DS sequel as very likely, rather than official.

Thankfully for those who fancy some 3D Skylanders action, it seems that a 3DS version is indeed in the works. In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, Toys For Bob producer Alex Ness confirmed that the 3DS was indeed one of the 'handheld devices' originally announced.

I don't know too much about the 3DS version of Skylanders Giants, but I do know it will be a completely different game than the Wii version - just like it was with Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. And also just like Spyro's Adventure, all Skylander toys will work in both games and remember all their adventures.

ONM also raised the question of the franchise coming to Wii U, especially as the new console's tablet controller will use similar near-field technology to the toys. The response from Ness was unsurprising: "I love the idea of bringing the Skylanders franchise to everything!"

So there you have it, Skylanders Giants will stomp onto 3DS, and we'll keep an eye out for details on how it'll use the handheld's features.
