@Rafke they’d actually be a good deal more expensive if they’d been made from printed parts. The amount of time it would take to achieve the various finishes used would be extremely cost-prohibitive. Heck, some of the finishes aren’t even achievable with printed parts, no matter how much time one might spend (I.e. actual wood, mirrored acrylic, metallics). Not to mention that the R&D/design work would still exist. It’s not as though one can walk up to a 3D printer and say “print me an NES cartridge shell”.
Beyond lazy. Way, WAY beyond. They didn't even bother to fart out some housings to match the garbage cover plate. It's just the normal midnight blue or whatever they're calling that color now. Buy an eBay vinyl appliqué for your current N3DS XL instead and save yourself $200.
Ugh, that controller. Also, that console. Needed someone with a LITTLE more design experience/training to tackle that project. Ergonomics be damned, much like the retron 5 controller :/
Keep in mind that these are rough prototypes. The stage in which you see them is JUST enough to have them 100% functional and not look totally hobbled together with scotch tape and rubber bands. It's a work in progress, but we are inching closer to v1.0 every day
I wish that these companies would spend a few bucks on the design (as in the aesthetics) and ergonomics of these portables. They all look awful, and quite honestly that's what prevents me from taking a closer look at any of them.
I own one and it has been worth it to me for no other reason than to be able to make my own F-Zero circuits. It's such a huge shame that it never lived up to its potential and was never released outside of Japan.
@SethNintendo - Dear lord, that's NASTY! I worked used retail during the late 90's and early 00's, and I've seen my fair share of roach-infested SEGA Genesis systems, but that Wii takes the cake!
