Re: Nintendo vs R4: The Lawsuit and the Snitch

wanderlustwarrior

@TrueWiiMaster: your wording, "narrowly purposed as the flashcart", has made it clear to me that people will not understand until they see for themselves.

http://m3adapter.com/index.htm
There. That is the site of a flashcart producer. I challenge anyone to find where it outright states that any of their devices can play NDS roms.

The problem on this board at least is that people are scapegoating the producers of the devices instead of realizing that it is the people uploading, downloading and playing the games that are the pirates.

To complete the antiquated analogy: If I was a ship, rum and blunderbuss maker/salesman in the 17th century, does that automatically make me a pirate? No. Does that cast some suspicion on me? Yes hell it does. But you cannot legally declare that I am guilty of anything.

Re: Nintendo vs R4: The Lawsuit and the Snitch

wanderlustwarrior

@letsplay, LEGEND MARIOID and others: who is this 'you'? We need a target for pronouns, people! No one is defending outright piracy (besides prochnow), so your statements seem to be aimed at me. Did you try reading my comments? I'm not defending piracy. I am saying, the developers of the R4-like devices are actually NOT PIRATES. They may be enablers, but they are not the pirates themselves.

@Dicesukeinuzuka: actually, some companies are angered with Gamestop because they don't see a dime from used game or system sales. But, that's an entirely other issue.

@theblackdragon: i was wondering if you were going to chime in! If any one wants a correct legal assessment, read her post.

Also, legal action is generally based on precedent, and at least in America, where part of the problem of piracy is, precedent is on the side of the flashcart producers. ThePirateBay and Napster both had to go legal, but they weren't outright shut down. I don't know how law proceeds in Japan (besides an insta-guilty), but over here and internationally, it wouldn't end well for nintendo.

Re: Nintendo vs R4: The Lawsuit and the Snitch

wanderlustwarrior

@Objection_Blaster: Thanks for the kind words and actually understanding what I was saying.

@iphys: How very, very true.
The Wii too, so really, everyone here is supporting a device that could be used to play pirated games. I'd very much like to see NoJ sue NoA. It might be funny.

@Swerd_Murd:
I'm going to ass-u-me that was pointed at me (or iphys). If so, that is not what I/we said. I am not defending piracy, nor saying I own an R4. It is the action of the user to use or play pirated games.
You shouldn't be too quick to dismiss fan-made games. Remember, Cave Story and Little Fighter 2 were independently developed games, and you could count their combined crew on one hand. Does that make them "completely busted"? WiiWare, DSiWare, disc-based games, they all had to start somewhere.
FYI, the devices cost $30-35.

Going off of what iphys said, computers can, and are used to pirate music. Nintendo actually shutting down the flashcart developers would be no different than Virgin Mobile shutting down Microsoft, Toshiba, Apple etc. because of what some consumers did.

Re: Nintendo vs R4: The Lawsuit and the Snitch

wanderlustwarrior

we've learned a new word today! can you say: BIAS?

R4 type devices are not used only for pirating games. That is an option, and the intended choice, but it is the choice of the consumer. Someone could theoretically use one to play MP3 files that they bought legally (the DS requires those files to be converted to AAC), play a fan created game, or program for their own purposes. Unlike the homebrew channel, they also do not physically modify the DS system.

If the aim was to shut down the people who offer the game files (which would be practically impossible), or to fix these devices to where they could no longer play the game files out of the box (quite possible), that would be acceptable.

Also, they're called flashcarts, not "R4-like devices". It would be like calling every restaurant a McDonald's-like store. Calling one by name basically amounts to an endorsement for these practices.

Re: System Update 4.2 Bricking Wiis Left, Right and Centre

wanderlustwarrior

@drdark:
ah ha ha. you must be new here.
You (who I'm guessing are still developing [hopefully], naive and impressionable, and without a filter), don't seem to understand much.

First, Nintendo was well aware of the likelihood that a Wii, like any console, could be hacked. Information from quite reputable members of the forums (while not the best source) does suggest that Nintendo was made aware of how the Homebrew Channel was possible, by its developers, before they launched it. Nintendo chose to ignore this. Unfortunately, this is well within some Nintendo business practices to ignore a potential asset regarding use expansion and exploitation until after it's become an issue (see: the Head-tracking guy now working on the Natal). Fourth, the sheer speed at which Nintendo's updates are beaten both on DS and Wii is a joke. On some occasions, it's happened within days. The multiple signs of incompetence on Nintendo's part in this area suggest people should have a right to be worried.

Second, while it is an issue, users of homebrew are in the minority. The targeted updates were okay as long as they did not interfere with normal users, but if indeed this one did, Nintendo has overstepped its bounds in it's responsibility to consumers. Not all people can or will be able to fix a console that they had no fault in damaging. At the least, Nintendo could've tested their updates before they launch, to make sure there is no issue.

Third, If you had actually bothered to read the page or other parts of the site (lurk moar), you'd know that Nintendo actually can check if someone has installed the homebrew channel.

I accept that there are things I can be wrong on. But, try to intentionally misinterpret my words again and make a pathetic attempt at an insult, and I'll give you a no-holds-barred verbal beatdown. This isn't Kotaku, there are actually coherent and mature users here.

Re: Red Steel 2 Devs "Have Beaten Waggle"

wanderlustwarrior

other articles in other websites specify what he means by this:
real world motions do transfer to game motions, so if you want to make strong swings, you need to make strong motions. I hope it works, but I really don't see how.

@buffalobob: "waggle" is an appropriate word. "retarded", on the other hand, is not.

Re: Assassin's Creed II: Discovery To Make Use of DSi Camera

wanderlustwarrior

@SanderEvers: so that's the stats! I knew it was significant, but my busy (read: lazy) self couldn't be bothered to remember the stats.

@Dark_Zelda: Simple answer really: it won't sell. I wish it weren't true, but action games not published by Nintendo tend to sell quite poorly on Wii. And they barely sell on the DS, too. Which is a damn shame, cause it would work quite well with the control scheme they'd first thought up for the series (more tactile commands instead of the normal button presses)

Re: Assassin's Creed II: Discovery To Make Use of DSi Camera

wanderlustwarrior

@invmat: I'm not saying " 'ban' " DS/DSLite-users; don't quote as if I were. Having been a DSLite owner myself, with friends who still are, I realize how much that might suck.

What I will say is that with the DSi having the better part of a year in age, while exclusive titles to it will be coming out in a few months, it would need an actually significant titles, which Assassin's Creed is, to justify launching it both when they did, and at all.

Re: Suda Clarifies No More Wii For No More Heroes

wanderlustwarrior

are characters not allowed to take a step back before they get stale? I'm fairly certain Bungie kinda likes Chief, and he's not the star of the next game. Though all the Links and Young Links are similar, they aren't always continuations of the same person's story either. No need to overreact just cause Travis may be taking a break from causing Anarchy in the Galaxy.

Re: Suda Clarifies No More Wii For No More Heroes

wanderlustwarrior

See what happens when you don't put words in others' mouths?

As of now, all we know is that the next game in the series (if there is indeed another game in the series) will not be for the Wii, and that Suda51 has an inclination towards continuing the series on at least a Nintendo console. We also know that plans change (see Killer7 coming to PS2), so all we know now is that we know nothing. Let's hold off the speculation at least until we have the next game, shall we?

@NeutralMilkHotel:
i detect an NMH in your username. Also, Suda51 enjoys putting hotels in his games. hmm... I've actually noticed a few comments from people I don't see online that much that seem like they may be coming from a disguise of the developer. I'm not saying that's you. (my silence isn't cheap, however...)
If i was actually right in that ridiculous speculation, I'd be so happy.

Re: No More Heroes 2 Gets A Control Shake-Up

wanderlustwarrior

@brandonbwii: why thank you. This (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/UnpleasableFanbase), actually. Notice the first of two companies to get it's own section?

@warioswoods: you CANNOT create a real swordplay experience with any video game technology that I know of, because it would be IMPOSSIBLE to be viable as a game and be realistic. Do you want swordplay games to ship with a bunch of live humans to take hits and hit you, while the game auto-shuts off every 3 minutes to keep you from losing an arm due to tetanus? (tetanus being the term for muscles locking up completely as they have no energy left) I don't think the average gamer would like that.

If the original is not your sort of thing, the sequel wouldn't be either. This title was never built from the ground up for MotionPlus, and no current game controller can simulate a "real swordplay experience". Swords cut things/people, and that's a pretty hard sensation to simulate.

Re: No More Heroes 2 Gets A Control Shake-Up

wanderlustwarrior

@Ian Daemon: Its a good thing reading his comment properly clearly shows that wasn't what he was talking about.

those of you who now have "zero interest": did you actually read the article? Were you even interested to begin with? We've still got the traditional remote/nunchuck control scheme; adding a classic controller option takes nothing away from the game (the same could have been said for an M+ option). Suda 51 also DID NOT GUARANTEE A MOTIONPLUS OPTION IN THE FIRST PLACE.

All that's changed is that we have a confirmed additional controller support, and that it's not the one that could've made the game impossible. Hell, they could've said "we're no longer considering Balance Board only or vitality sensor only support, but are using the Classic Controller" and the article would've meant the EXACT SAME THING.

Either you're being egged on by somebody editorializing, or you just don't understand.

Re: No More Heroes 2 Gets A Control Shake-Up

wanderlustwarrior

But how will I masturb--RECHARGE without my phallus?

I think this is a smart move, as the original control scheme was perfect, and I definitely prefer a traditional controller (2 sticks, buttons and control pad opposite) on most other games.

I still think adding MotionPlus would've been a mistake. Playing a sword-centered game being required to move one arm all the time makes absolutely no sense from both design and execution standpoints. It would be completely lacking in resistance, recoil and feedback, which would be incredibly important. The weight of the weapon itself is also incredibly important. Imagine using a broadsword at the same speed as a dagger. Makes no sense, does it? That's why the first boss in the series is so freaking slow. Plus, we'd be complaining that the timing was off since all we had to do was move our wrist while they're busy moving their whole bodies. Using a sword is also incredibly tiring and stressful. Real swordfights only last a little bit for good reason. If you'd actually been swinging a blade around for as long as the average NMH stage or jedi fight, we'd be incapable of moving. We don't have a Force, so it'd be a little jarring.

Unfortunately, despite its design, 1:1 control makes no sense for Wii and swordfighting.

Re: Help People Get Their Wii Consoles Online, Get Free Games

wanderlustwarrior

WHAT THE EFF!!

I'm jealous. this also gives us two possiblilities in North America:
1) NOA denies such a thing would ever come to America, either while being patronizing or outright dickish. NOA then does the exact same as NOE and Nintendo Japan 4 months later.
2) NOA notices it has to do with both the virtual console and people doing stuff on their Wii that doesn't require buying a new peripheral, which gives it 2 strikes. Fans ask for them to do this, which is the third strike, and it doesn't happen.

...nooo, I'm not jaded at all. But if they actually do it, color me surprised.

Re: New Wii Zelda Artwork Leaked?

wanderlustwarrior

I realize I'm posting this after the update, so instead of stating that its obviously the manifestation of the master sword, I'll explain why we could tell that without having outside confirmation (one semester of art history plus frequent TVTtropes editing = instant expert, kids):

  • Link's back is turned, meaning the picture is specifically emphasizing what is missing, the sword
  • Link's arm is extended, as if reaching. RIGHT arm, see the guess I will make at the end of the response. (yes, even though I don't play the games, I realize Link is left-handed, like many competent swordsmen. It's quite likely the sword will be flipped again, otherwise the artist messed up)
  • The area reached towards, where the sword should be, is the girl's body.
  • special point: I was going to detail the resemblance of the girl to the sword itself, but zelda-master (surprise surprise) did an excellent job of noticing/explaining nearly everything i was going to point out. I will say the girl also has a quite sword shaped body: silver colored and coming to a point at the top, simple and straight on the exterior but ornate on the interior. Also, the negative space around her hair (around her forehead and the air by where her hair parts at the bottom) resemble 3 triangles in a triforce formation.

my guess:
This game is a direct sequel to Twilight Princess, and Link retains AN ANIMAL FORM:
already covered - right arm = sword arm as seen in Twilight princess, but pay special attention to the bottom of his hat and his right hand and elbow. as opposed to matching their usual colors, these match his natural hair color, and are expressed in shapes reminiscent of tufts of fur (the elbow being biologically similar to the back of the front "knee" on a quadruped). for no particular reason, the hand also ends in a clearly triangular black point, which would likely be a claw. From this, I would guess that Link can still turn into a clawed, hairy animal (I'd assume wolf). How this would mesh with the increased emphasis on swordplay, I don't know, but these do seem to be clear signs of an animal transformation to me.

thoughts?

Re: Frontier Officially Announces LostWinds Sequel

wanderlustwarrior

@TourianTourist:
Probably because summer and winter actually can change gameplay. Unless enemies can only be seen when the leaves change color in fall, I don't see what the other two seasons would bring. Also, not everywhere has as pronounced changes in the seasons as everywhere else.

@Golgo: I'm hoping the winter theme points to a tomorrow release.

Re: Muramasa: The Demon Blade Exclusive Release Party

wanderlustwarrior

g*d fricking damnit. New Yorkers don't even need to rub it in our jealous faces, the amount of stuff they get would be too much effort.

Gamestop is centered in Texas, why nothing here? Chicago's a big city, still, jack crap. Heck, nintendo even has headquarters in Washington State, but noooo, NYC all the time.

(cries in corner)

Re: Review: Metroid Prime Trilogy (Wii)

wanderlustwarrior

I'm going to disagree strongly with the score, not the review itself. The review has several legitimate issues that might have been fixed, so I think they should have been taken into account before calling the game basically perfect. To give the score a 10 after that seems like favoritism/fanboyism to me.
Between 8 and 9/10

@TokenGirl: Oh no, we need a token girl! where are you going?

Re: Nintendo Download 04-05 August 2009 (JAPAN)

wanderlustwarrior

@Atlantis1982: agreed.

God freaking dammit. I'm actually thinking of sending NOA a letter expressing my distaste in their recent decisions. I haven't been this mad at a game company since going into SEGA of America headquarters and telling the first worker I saw to treat the Sonic franchise with respect.

Re: Nintendo Download: Monkeys, Musketeers, Cards and Sudoku (US)

wanderlustwarrior

I derive significantly more entertainment from responses and dissatisfaction towards the VC than the VC itself (of course, I've only got 2 games from it that I never play because I don't have the time, but whatever).

Usually I would say that when a business does something that seems to us outside of their best interests, we should take into account that they know a lot more about their situation than we do. However, this second week completely lacking is puzzling. Still, there are a great many people overreacting...

@SuperSmashBros: constructive criticism: if you already know you have spelling/grammar issues, please take care to proofread before you post. When your first sentence includes "save the faith", you've got some issues.

Toonami was cancelled because of significantly declining ratings. I'd say that was because it appealed more to a demographic (mine) that used to watch it, but had long since grown up and left it for its sexy/funny/awesome older sister, AdultSwim. As [as] is considered seperately in the rating from CN, naturally the ratings would constantly decline. Also, there hasn't been much of quality for quite some time, since they were stuck in Naruto's filler hell and decided to inch through One Piece's new dub slowly. As opposed to the many, many, MANY poor business decisions done by the network recently, taking Toonami out back and putting it out of its misery was probably for the best.

Having read your entire petition, I see that you could use some help. Your heart seems to be in the right place, but your mind seems to be wandering aimlessly. I wasn't sure which parts were aimed at Nintendo or other Wii owners. There were many parts highly unnecessary, like the list, or the venting frustrations at Cartoon Network. If you're going to do this, I recommend an extensive rewrite. Good luck to you.

Incidentally, how old are you?

Re: Pop Creator Bringing New Apps to DSiWare

wanderlustwarrior

@Nnooo: Wow, I wasn't expecting a response from a game company, especially such a friendly and detailed one. Thank you! I've been inside SEGA of America HQ before, but all that goes on inside those walls is rape, exploitation and murder of franchises I used to love.

@post 22: I should go patent that and keep you guys for using my idea without me having some sort of profit...

@post16: questions for you:
-Nintendo's personalitisation drive? Sometimes it seems like they're pushing certain things just to make a quick buck (absurdly numerous color choices on the handhelds and Gamecube Orange) or doing the opposite and keeping choices the fans have expressed interest in (cough*Black Wii*cough). Can you say what that is like on the developer side?

  • What made you all decide to release this?
  • how are the file size restraints on the DSi?
  • Why is the company named how it is?

Thank you for your responses, Nic, other developers could learn from your helpful nature instead of talking about sales or calling fans "nerds and otaku" or never responding to feedback or not updating pages for 3 years (I think we all know who the first 2 were, but the last 2 were High-Voltage Software)
