Wow, it's been that long, eh? I had NSMB Wii, then NSMB on the DS, then NSMB2 on the 3DS, so yeah...great games in all. I haven't focused on picking them this time around, as other games are demanding my attention, but if you are a 3DS owner, you should get NSMB2...great game! Perhaps get the titles also that were for the DS to add to your collection.
@Socar At this point, I'm not sure they CAN ignore the mobile market, as much as I agree with you. It seems that it's "do or die" now with getting involved with phone apps to get your name out there more prominently.
Remember how reluctant Nintendo was (at first) to go this route? Seems they have definitely changed their tune to stay viable. Woe to the gamers such as myself that would prefer they stick to consoles and portables.
It's funny...when I went in to purchase my new N3DS XL, I was originally going to get the 2DS but the sales associate did a wonderful sales pitch and earned his store an additional $100. Of course I'm a pushover, but hey...I think I did the right thing and I'm glad now that I didn't get the 2DS, since I love the folding feature and the size of the screens...plus I'd really miss the 3D effect!
Early decisions are Rowlett and Moon...but that could change over the course of the next few months. We'll see what else they deliver for trailers in the near future. I really wasn't overly excited for X/Y or Ruby/Saphire, but perhaps I should look into those titles to tide me over..
Pleasant surprise seeing the Japanese trailer! This game is a no-brainer for me in November, but which one? I've focued on fire-types before, and water...grass, however, is a different story.
Rowlett seems to be the choice for starters for me right now, and leaning toward Moon, but we have 6 months to go. I might pre order when it I can, but I'll wait until the target date gets closer.
@rjejr Well, I can't say what they're going to do, but I can say with some certainty that if they don't do more than just show off Zelda for however many days it is, they will have some truly disgruntled fans, both at E3 and watching it (like myself...I'll tune into the highlights but won't bother if Zelda is all they do).
Being too much of a "traditionalist", Metroid Prime: Federation Force holds zero interest for me. That, and not enough friends who enjoy the video game hobby (at last count, 1 including myself) to play with.
So bottom line for E3 this year, it sounds to be less than stellar for Nintendo all in all, but I suppose we could be pleasantly surprised...right?
@rjejr They REALLY need to highlight some of the 3DS games this E3 that are coming up. I am an avid 3DS supporter and would like to see some footage on, let's say, Dragon Quest VII and VIII. The trailer for Pokemon Sun & Moon was just released...and I personally want MORE information on these latest two Pokemon games.
@rjejr You make very good valid points. I was not impressed with what Nintendo is doing for the E3 show this year. Showing one game? That's it? They could at least highlight some upcoming 3DS titles and some Wii U titles (being a steadfast 3DS owner, I would appreciate some closer looks at the upcoming games through the year).
You certainly aren't the only one concerned with a March launch. I agree, it doesn't bode well for the overall outlook, which promotes more doubt within the Nintendo community of fans, such as myself, wondering what will befall the big N for this year's sales alone. My main concern, to be frank, is the 3DS keeping alive and well with some more game releases to keep me interested. Not that my backlog isn't 10 miles long now....
@rjejr To be honest, 4 months won't make much of a difference, and I do agree with you that a holiday launch would have been more advantageous, however, I don't know exactly how long they've been working (those developers that received kits) on games for this system. I still believe the delay was, at least in part, to "firm up" their software release. This all depends on if they do the "cookie cutter" productions of the same titles they've been cranking out for years for each new system. Perhaps they are going some unknown route with games..perhaps the hardware requires some extra finesse (they have rumored the system will be at least as powerful as the Xbox One) to make games for it.
There could be a million reasons, and the bottom line is they've already decided to launch in March, NOT the holidays, so speculation on the WHY might never be known by anyone here. Time will tell how much of their bottom line will be affected by the decision to hold off on the holiday launch.
@rjejr I'm not saying that a holiday launch isn't "better" for a company. It always has been and probably always will be, but if the console and games aren't ready, they aren't ready. Do you really want them to launch it half-assed then end up tanking in sales? Losing customer confidence? Not having the games that consumers are expecting? The Wii U was a hard sell right after the Wii as people didn't know if it was an upgraded Wii or something entirely different. THAT hurt sales in the beginning with the console and it's performance hasn't been that stellar ever since. Nintendo is probably making a very good move holding off until the first quarter of next year. All I have to say, though, is I HOPE they "wow" the crowd with it in March.
@rjejr If the NX isn't projected to be ready by the holidays, then March of the following year will give the 1st and 3rd party games more "oomph", for lack of a better word. I would rather have a great selection of games (strong support) than only have one or two games with a "meh" attitude about it. This is probably a smart move on Nintendo's part. Not sure about the E3 "only Zelda" showing, however. Can't they feature some 3DS games as well? Since I am a 3DS owner, the new releases slated through December look amazing.
Frankly, I wouldn't even have attempted this series if it wasn't for my introduction to Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright. The casual play and "ease of entry" system convinced me that I made the right choice to buy it, and I haven't looked back. So much so that I recently purchased Fire Emblem Awakening, and am planning on getting Conquest once my skills flesh out.
Seriously, I'm not a hardcore "gamer" but love this style of play. The game in and of itself is marvelous, and the characters are so endearing to easily be attached to.
@FierceRagnar Well, as was said, it seems to have expanded it's player base by introducing itself to beginners with some features that make it more accessible. I don't think, overall, that's a bad thing since sales have skyrocketed.
I admit I'm not a big DLC fan, but there are certain things I will purchase, such as some DLC for the games I own, and my VC copy of Pokemon Yellow. So yeah, I use it, too, but being a collector, I prefer physical copies of the games over digital copies (for the whole game, that is).
Honestly, I haven't used this "feature" very often, even though I have at least two games that support Amiibo. I have Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach (plus Pacman), but that's all I have for Amiibo figures. I think the most I've used them is for Smash and also for Mario & Luigi: Paper Jame (love the power up cards).
I'm glad they made this announcement, actually. The new 3DS is my main gaming system and will continue to be so long after the NX has established itself and "gotten comfortable" in mainstream gaming. I have no plans to purchase an NX at this time, so I'm going with the new 3DS and it's great lineup of games.
I have to admit, when I first played a Fire Emblem game years ago, I was disappointed and avoided the series at that point forward. I'm not sure what I didn't like...perhaps the tactical game aspects, but I kick myself for making a quick judgement call on the game and the series in it's entirety. Now, being a little more appreciative of the tactical/RPG elements, I picked up Birthright and am finding it one of the BEST games in my 3DS library! I'm glad I decided to give this game a go...I have not been disappointed and I believe this is my new favorite franchise....
I absolutely LOVE my new 3DS XL (red one). I'm glad that I purchased one a few months ago and am looking forward to collecting/playing more games for it this year. So far I have Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Super Smash Bros., and Pokemon Black (DS). Great games, but I hope to add Animal Crossing New Leaf either this coming month or soon before the end of the year. Great article, by the way.
I suppose these game will most likely only appeal to those that played it the first time around. You can't really compare it to all the improvements that have happened over the course of several years. For me, the nostalgia factor is the number one reason I purchased Yellow. However, if I compare it to say, X/Y, then we're talking a whole different story. I also give this a 9 myself and find it a wonderful addition to my library. Kudos for the re-release.
Yes, some of the appeal certainly is nostalgia, but I'm not blinded by it. The game mechanics, building your own team, etc. make for the fact that Pokemon is a good game. I can see the game for what it is: A great RPG/Action title despite it's dated graphics.
Ah yes, my first Pokemon experience was my friend buying me a copy of Blue for my birthday. Before that, he was ranting on and on about how great Pokemon was and that he played it nonstop. So, as I told him I didn't have a copy of it for my Gameboy, he promptly bought me a copy and said, "Happy Birthday". That was years ago and to this day the Pokemon "bug" has never fully gone away. Now, 20 years later (more or less), I'm playing Pokemon Yellow on my new 3DS XL and reliving the old days once again with my favorite Pokemon, Pikachu. I believe when Sun and Moon come out later this year, I'll have a copy of that lined up. I promised myself never to get bit by the Pokemon bug again, but alas, Pikachu has once again stolen my heart. lol
I've never had the personal opportunity to visit the store, but someday I hope to make it down there for a visit. This place looks awesome! And I'm sure the NX will have it's own special place within when the time comes for it to be sold/displayed. I DO love that giant Mario Amiibo statue! That would look great in my den.
I personally don't consider Paper Jam "trash". The game is good for what it is, another Mario & Luigi game mixing elements from the Paper Mario series, making it a different take on the series. I personally enjoy the game with Paper Mario in it. Granted, it's certainly not revolutionary or ground-breaking, but far from "trash" or a detriment to the series. More of the same, would be a better description. The Paper Mario game Sticker Star didn't impress me too much, but still was enjoyable.
I'm sure Nintendo will reveal their new console/portable system this coming year for the fans. Should be quite the E3 show for everyone, non-fans included. I'm just curious what that means for us 3DS owners and fans. Will this new NX mean the 3DS's ultimate downfall to video gaming antiquity? I would like to enjoy my new 3DS XL for years to come.
