With the NFC scanner on the Wii U GamePad and now the New 3DS / portal options, Nintendo gives gamers a chance to enjoy toys-to-life gaming quickly and easily. As we all know the amiibo range arrived in late 2014 to kickstart this new era of Nintendo collectibles, and it's proven to be a success.
Back in February Nintendo reported that it had shifted over 40 million amiibo in the first nine months / three quarters of the financial year. The end-year results have shown that momentum remains strong, with shipments hitting roughly 53.6 million once the final quarter was added.
As you can see in the graphic below, these demonstrate strong momentum since the range launched, and also shows how popular the Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer amiibo card packs have been.
Those card numbers remind us, once again, that if Pokémon cards are released with Pokémon Sun and Moon in the Holiday season Nintendo could be looking at a lot of sales.
It was also noted, in Tatsuma Kimishima's President's Presentation, that the Splatoon range has proven particularly popular in Japan as it approaches one million sales. In the US, meanwhile, some recognisable older figures continue to sell on a consistent basis.
The amiibo ranges have proven to be one of Nintendo's most successful initiatives in this generation. With numbers like these we can expect the figures and cards to remain integral to the company's future plans.

The headline and the lede are confusing.
I get the popularity of the figures, but just can't get my head around why people buy those cards.
As nice as the figures are, they don't really do anything. They're less 'toys-to-life' and more 'collectables that occasionally unlock something.'
I hope amiibo die a horrible death. They're an awful scourge on gaming, they have nothing to do with gaming and add nothing. They're a trojan horse form of DLC. I think the demand and hype for them has been decreasing recently.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Well of course demand and hype would decrease when the remainder is minimal. For Smash all that's left is:
Cloud
Bayonetta
Corrin
The only other stuff is the Kirby series and maybe some Animal Crossing cards. Mario wave 2 and Zelda wave 1 alongside a Infinity/Skylanders/Dimensions type game would be a good start to getting hype back.
I can't wait to get my hands on a Cloud amiibo. After that though, I'm done collecting. There's just not enough incentive to collect these beyond having the characters I like most.
If they sell that well they should be announcing more.
I LOVE AMIIBO!
@Grumblevolcano That Bayonetta AMiibo will be in Great demand!
I'd like to see amiibo functionally used in figures that are a bit more high end, personally. The Yarn Yoshi ones are pretty special - if they could bring that to collector toy lines then I'd be interested. But beyond the Smash ones there really aren't many I could want. I'd collect Starfox amiibo; maybe Metroid ones.
@cfgk24 Totally but the hype won't sink in completely until a release date is announced. I could see more amiibo news being E3 filler material.
Gota makesure I get that Bayonetta Amiibo on order when its available before it's gone like hot cakes.
I love amiibo figures and hope for more Mario ones with waluigi..boo..wario in normal clothes etc.
The cards are rubbish tho...boring!
Amiibo have sold brilliantly so far, but I don't see them keeping the same momentum. Plenty of people have said that they're bored with amiibo now, or that they're stopping after the Smash series.
I got the six I wanted. I don't mind amiibo, certainly doing hate it. If Pokémon sun/moon have an interesting use for amiibo, I'd like to see some nice Pokémon released in the future.
They've been absolutely successful in selling them to people, especially collectors, they have been less successful in showing more meaningful ways to use the amiibo you already own. I'll Keep saying it, but Nintendo really needs to create an Amiiboland style game where each amiibo unlocks worlds/characters/weapons(items) etc... and give not only a reason for having bought amiibo, but to keep on buying them (in bucketloads).
The little unlockables and costumes etc.. are nice, but they don't vary considerably from game to game, if Nintendo were to create something like the above, they would sell millions more amiibo to the everyday gamer, not just the collector.
I just want amiibos of Waluigi, Ridley and Wolf.
@Grumblevolcano thank you for someone else also thinking along the same line, except not (just) making new amiibo for this skylanders-like game, but using ALL amiibo .
Amiibo cards of Pokemon would make Nintendo so much money they'd be daft to not do it.
I honestly think the Amiibo's have made up for the Wii U shortcomings money wise.
Sorry for being stuck on repeat, but they've gotta get rid of the bases to interest me as a collectible, and they've got to have some other application or use to interest me as a toy. The only one I have is Yarn Yoshi, because it makes a CaF cuddly toy to have around.
The rest are attractive, but just look daft stuck on a dull round base.
@RoomB31 I guess I wasn't specific enough, assumed that it supporting all amiibo was obvious just from that type of game existing. The new amiibo was just so there's amiibo releasing at the same time as the new game.
@Grumblevolcano makes sense, it's just that when I think of Skylanders, I think of tons of new figures being released, and that it shouldn't be an excuse for nintendo to create a ton more (if they go this route).
Honestly, I haven't used this "feature" very often, even though I have at least two games that support Amiibo. I have Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach (plus Pacman), but that's all I have for Amiibo figures. I think the most I've used them is for Smash and also for Mario & Luigi: Paper Jame (love the power up cards).
@NintyFan yep, totally agree.
And I STILL don't have villager. grumble grumble.
I guess with that much shipped amiibo, that will mean more software support, which will likely lead to it very own "toys to life" game. You know since it's a lot easier to get a hold of most amiibo then it was a year ago, making it so less people can complain.
I guess these toys are produced in China for pennies and sold at a very high mark up, so if some don't sell the small loss is covered by the gamers paying high prices for the ones that do sell.
It's a fad and will peak, by the end of 2016, unless Nintendo has a glut of new games to be released before March 2017.
@NintyFan The have....its called Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival.
Good news is good news and Amiibo selling well is good news indeed.
Nintendo....how about like um...making a Camilla Amiibo eh? That'd be awesome!
Are the amiibo card numbers packages sold or individual cards?
If the NX has NFC and sells well Amiibo could blow through the roof. THink how big sales would be if there were 50 million Wii U systems in circulation (as opposed to 12 million)
I have 35 amiibo and I can't stop
Almost more than the WiiU & 3DS combined over all. LOLOL
If there were Pokemon amiibo cards Nintendo better produce enough... or we'll face another shortage.
If anything, Nintendo will (rightly) see this as conformation that Animal Crossing HHD and its amiibo cards are the way to go. :/
@Aurumonado I have 187 amiibo figures.
@NintyFan and i would be very well prepared to play it! How cool woud that be, if they had an Amiibo party game with mini games? It could come wth a decent amount, but then unlock more with Amiibo
@Dankykong your math skills are lacking. 3ds is at 56 million. But still, not fair to compare a $13 purchase to a $200 to $300 purchase...
Thanks for correcting an obvious joke moron.
I want a new Smash series of amiibo based on characters' alternate trophies. It would be so cool to see a blood falcon amiibo, or characters in different, cool poses.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
How can they be an scourge on gaming if they have – as you said – nothing to do with gaming? And if you don't like them just don't buy those figures and ignore them. No need to be pissed and angry.
But I guess that's the modern gamer. Always pissed about the tiniest thing, everything and nothing. Just for the sake of complaining.
