also, if you have a ps3, the the Ultimate collection that's coming out next year that has 40 genesis games and some still unknown unlockable arcade classics as well. that has phantasy star 4 in it. if you have a Playstation 3, i'd wait for that...
ignoring the fact that both games were released in cheaper collections for ps2 (and one for gc and xbox as well), this is still an amazing week in terms of quality for anyone in europe who is without the previously mentioned systems (the gc mm collection really isn't that good because of the aforementioned button config problems... i.e. the swapped A and B button placement and the annoying gc d-pad)...
i'm just playing through circle of moon for gba for the first time and that game uses some music from this. just got me to thinking how amazing the music for this game truly is. i really love this game sooo much. i never got it on vc because i never stopped playing the snes copy i own.
but i also wanted to say that circle is amazing. if the other gba titles or symphony of the night (i haven't played any of those games) compare favorably to circle, then they must be amazing...
honestly, i love this game. i still play it every now and then. and for a while, i was obsessed with f-zero maximum velocity on the gameboy advance (which is kinda similar to this game in many ways). haven't played X or GX but i look forward to discovering those as well in the near future.
yup, the game was insanely hard but still kinda fun when you figured things out. reminded me of a little a simpler version of the Indiana jones and the fate of atlantis and those types of pc games kinda
yeah, i feel that everyone's a tad hard on this gem. it's not perfect by any means but i like it just because it reminds me so much of being a kid again...
never played this but i loved ff adventure for gameboy back in the day. i'll prob dl it for vc though cuz i've been hearing rave reviews for over a decade from my friends about this thing. but yeah, i did own secret of evermore and i hated it so even though these are unrelated in practically every way except publisher and genre, there might be the chance i don't like it...
about 5 being easier than the earlier games, proto man's stage got pretty hard at times. actually, i found the difficulty in 5 to be the most balanced out of the original series. to collect all of the letters and stuff could be kinda annoying at times but the game is still fun. i guess i just like easier games maybe. but by the time you get to proto man's / the end stages, the game really gets tricky at times.
yeah, i mean i love the original series a lot but i consider the first mmx game to be complete perfection. when that comes, it will be one of the best games on vc period (in my humble opinion at least).
what i should have said was that to release this game, one would also have to go through similar efforts to release super double dragon so if this one is releasable, then so is super double dragon. dd2 and dd3 would require clearing things with different people. that doesn't mean that it is impossible that they would ever come to vc.
"deggs - Your reasoning is flawed. Just because Acclaim published DD2 and DD3 here and they're now out of business doesn't mean another company could pick up the rights, which is what was done here to begin with (DD1 was published by Tradewest). The publishing license is not the same as the intellectual properties. The NES version of DD2 was recently ported to mobile phones in Europe FYI."
Jonny2x4, acclaim published a ton of nes games. though many of them were licensed games, many also were just North American and european releases of japanese games. Not one North American acclaim property that I know of has been released on VC on north america (feel free to prove me wrong though because i hope i'm wrong). i'm not saying that that can't change. it's just that when a game is rereleased years later, the person holding the copyright has to obviously give consent (not like they wouldn't want to as they have an opportunity to make some money). in this case, aksys either bought the copyright or got the rights to publish it for vc i guess.in the case of dd2 being released on mobile phones in europe, who knows who controls that copyright, if they have any intention to release it on vc or what...
what would be awesome now that we got this is to get some of the sequels translated (though i know it's pretty much never going to happen).
"Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun" always looked cool supposedly it was more of a sequel to renegade on the super famicom but it was actually good.
the other one i wouldn't mind checking out is "Shin Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun - Kunio Tachi No Banka" for the super famicom, which returned to the more cartooney look of river city ransom.
the next brawler game in the series that was released for the nes after this game (river city ransom) was, of course "Kunio Kun no Jidaigeki Dayo Zenin Shuugou!". it looks quite similar to (and plays rather similarly to) to river city ransom. the main difference being that it takes place in medieval Japan and its story concerns past relatives of the protagonists of this game (river city ransom). i wouldn't mind checking that one out as well.
also, i could go for the snes version of combatribes while we're at it
I always wondered at this game's insane appeal. it is amazing. don't get me wrong... that said though, i love mm2 (it's probably one of the best) and after mm2, i feel that this game and the next got a little stale in comparison to some of the later titles. i really feel that everyone overlooks mm5 and mm6 (the other "best" mega man games in the original series in my opinion). i hear a lot of reviews that scoff at the fact that mm4, mm5 and mm6 came out in a period shorter than 2 years. still, the games did further develop the weapon system (allowing you to finally charge your gun a la MMX yet they still retain the charm and straightforward awesomeness of mm2).
i have to say, after playing this and then playing mm5, i realize just how amazing mm5 truly is. and then when mm6 came around... stuff got even better. even screwattack, who thought that this game(mm3) and mm2 were basically tied for best nes megaman acknowledged that mm6 was awesome. it truly is. so all i'm saying is don't believe the naysayers, mm5 and mm6 are just as good as mm2 and (in my humble opinion) waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy better than this game (of course, i'm sure the popular opinion disagrees).
anyways, see for yourself. go out and buy the anniversary collection (but please note that the gamecube version of the anniversary collection has some major button configuration issues so i recommend the ps2 or xbox versions)
yeah, i've been playing this when i get the chance on the playstation 2 genesis collection and i have to say, it's amazing. prob one of the best rpgs that will ever hit vc. right now, i'd say it's my second fav rpg of all time (second only to Final Fantasy 2(4) and keeping in mind that i never was able to find most ps1 rpgs cuz i got my ps2 just recently. in fact i just got my playstation2 specifically for the genesis collection to play this very game and for the 2 mega man collections). I'm enjoying the game even more than I did ff3(6) or chrono trigger. The story's cool, and the music is great (for the most part).
if you don't have it yet on playstation 2, you'll be doing yourself a favor when you get it on vc.
i also wouldn't mind gettin some darius games. i love darius gaiden (i got it in the taito legends pack for ps2). i can't wait to play the series from the beginning (super darius being darius 1 of course). also, i'm hoping for sagaia or whatever it's called on the genesis instead of super darius 2 just cuz that cheese over-the-top guitar driven soundtrack (a-la-lords of thunder) = super lame...
where's chase hq 2 for the genesis... i had that and loved it as a kid. you get to use different vehicles and stuff. i bought the snes one recently and it isn't as good (not too keen on the first person car view when the graphics aren't that great)
the second castlevania for the original game boy (belmont's revenge) did rock though. i bought that off ebay a few years ago and it was still awesome many years later.
but yeah you're right, everyone stay well clear of Castlevania Adventure for the original black n white (or puke green as the case may be) game boy. Adventure is probably the slowest, most annoying piece of garbage i have ever played and definitely the low point of the castelvania series.
i figured by this point that the game would never come out on vc. i'm glad that i am now pleasantly surprised. i can't wait.
i wonder if the delay has anything to do with the enhanced sound chip and enhanced graphics chip that was in the japanese version and the game? i wonder if we'll get a translated version of the superior japanese game or the actual american verison? apparently the these two enhanced chips wouldn't work in the us version of the nes and were removed for the us release of the game.
that said, the us version of the game still had some sort of chip enhancement and because of this, the game was never able to be used in any 3rd party (probably illegal) nes consoles like the fc twin.
i've been really hoping for this game though as long as i've known about the virtual console. it came out really late the nes' life, the genesis was already out and the snes was just around the corner (if not out already). By the time the game had come out, i had given up on the nes for a few years (as every other ten year old had). Years later, when I had finally gone back to my old nes console to enjoy all of the cheap games that were flooding discount bins (and i had come to the realization that enhanced graphics didn't necessarily make a game any better), this game was damn hard to find.
i second the abadox, all of the aleste/space megaforce stuff, and of course (though not freakin likely) any or all thunder force. all i have at the moment (as i stupidly sold my genesis) is thunder spirits for snes and somehow, there's a total graphics hit that happened between the port from genesis to snes (is that even posssible?)
yeah, i have to admit, my ps2 mm and mmx collections are amazing and prob my fav ps2 game discs... honestly, even when i was playing the originals on my nes, i loved mm5 the most and mmx on snes. if they could ever top those games, i'd be glad. i soooooo hope that mm9 allows for the charging weapons that are in mm5 and mmx (though from what i've seen, this may not be the case)...
yeah, calling this a shmup doesn't do it justice. like what has already been said, exploration was a big part of it. it was fun in the 80s... don't know how it stacks up these days though
i remember playing both snes and genesis/md versions back in the day. the snes one looked and sounded a ton better. that's why it's soooo strange that the md one is being brought to vc. anyone have any idea why that is? and what about some other interplay games?
Blackthorne (programmed by Blizzard of World of Warcraft fame) was published by Interplay. I wonder who owns the right to that? It was released for snes and 32X (attachment for the MD)
looking back (though I haven't played either shattered soldier or contra 4) but this really was the best of the contra games... i still play it all the time on my snes
i had this and i loved it as a kid... i remember hooking up my c64 again sometime in the early 90s and being not so impressed though after playing nes for a few years...
yeah.................. i never realized that this was put out by Brøderbund back in the day...
i really really hope that this means that The Guardian Legend will see light of day on VC as it involved Brøderbund, compile and irem. i've always wanted to play that game. maybe now i will get my chance
hmmm, from what little of it that i played, i remember enjoying the emulator translated FF3 (in japan) game for famicom a lot... Is it better than Dragon Warrior 3? Hard to say... I'm about half way through Dragon Warrior 3 at the moment but I'm starting to lose interest (but in it's defense, i am playing the gameboy color version of the game though it's the best version i've seen so far...)
and yeah, i always found chrono trigger to be overrated... i mean, i got the thing the day it hit stores back in the day and i had already played through the 3 snes final fantasy games (2 (4), 3 (6) and mystic quest). though CT looked amazing at the time and played smoothly, i still found it kinda lacking the in depth that other rpgs had at the time (FF3/6 and Phantasy Star 4).
yeah, crystalis is prob the best action rpg i've ever played but a vc release means little to me seeing as i've beaten it a few times in the past... for me, the top rpg/action adventure wish list would look as follows:
damn, i've been waiting for this one forever... i'm such a huge gradius fan (to me one of the best game series evaaaaaaaaaaaar) and to have this finally playable in my region would be amazing... i sooooooooo can't wait for this and as soon as vc was announced i was begging for it
just started this the other day (in the genesis collection for ps2) and i'm lovin it... to be honest, so far at least, i'm not as into it as much as i was into the snes ff games but it beat CT and any other snes rpg hands down. this is prob one of the best rpgs i've ever played...
dr. mario and tetris on a new nintendo system? it's like i'm a kid again... too bad they messed with the fever music (i love the original fever music sooo much)...
i don't think DD2 and DD3 are releasable in north america. acclaim owned the north american distribution rights and they went under. other companies have bought rights to various things here and there. super double dragon, much like this game, was published by tradewest and if this game is releasable then super double dragon will be as well. honestly, DD3 for the nes was one of the toughest games i ever played. it was practically impossible to make it anywhere in that game...
one of my fav genesis games as a kid. i never got the capcom arcade collection volume 1 for ps2 for some reason so i'll definitely pick this one up...
strangely enough, capcom used the same type of controls in eco fighters and that game is also an amazing shooter (if not the best shooter that i have ever played)...
the c64 had a few good games. i had hundreds of them (back then, piracy was kinda a way of life and everyone just copied games onto disks for everyone else)... but yeah, when nes came out, we all stopped playing c64 because the games were a ton more complex and interesting and you didn't have to wait a half hour to load 'em up.
still, a few c64 games i remembered fondly were: turrican, predator (prob the best c64 i owned) robocop (the nes is better ... damn ocean software... i could never beat level 1 for some reason because i had no idea where to go. still the music was amazing),
spy hunter (best version of this game. the nes one was horrible), G.I.Joe (the game rocked. it was hard but damn good fun), forgotten worlds,
never ever got a chance to play either ps1 castlevania game sadly... the last one i owned was castlevania 4 for snes (still one of the best games i ever played...) oh well... if SotN is released, I would dropo everything and buy it that instant... maybe they could save space in a number of ways so that it could work as a wiiware title. I don't understand why they didn't up the hard drive to a gig or something more practical...
would be nice if they did updated versions of the gba metroid games or a new 2d metroid altogether... also, SotN and the other one (Castlevania Chronicles i think it's called) would be nice and easily done with this wiiware service. maybe square might shine to doing wiiware versions of FF games or Dragon Quest games or at least releasing some of those awesome enix games from the snes...
i read somewhere that this is a semi-port or r-type 2 but with an added intro level and a missing level or two. in order to increase the already insane difficulty, they got rid of the mid level checkpoints, making this game impossible at times (unless you're the shmup master). there are a lot of reviews floating around the net that are really hard on this game (especially when compared to r-type 3 for snes). it was an early release on the snes and shmups were already starting to loose some popularity at the time. i remember seeing gradius 3 (to me, the greatest of all snes shmups) and thunder force 2 and this game on store shelves for less then $20 canadian only months after being released (which at that time was practically unheard of because all snes games and most genesis games were often between $60 and $70 canadian for the first few years). still, if you liked the other two r-types and you're an r-type pro by now, then by all means... it's prob the last r-type that can be released for vc unless we get some sort of wii ware release (despite r-type final being the last game in the series)

about 5 being easier than the earlier games, proto man's stage got pretty hard at times. actually, i found the difficulty in 5 to be the most balanced out of the original series. to collect all of the letters and stuff could be kinda annoying at times but the game is still fun. i guess i just like easier games maybe. but by the time you get to proto man's / the end stages, the game really gets tricky at times.

Re: Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
just started this the other day (in the genesis collection for ps2) and i'm lovin it... to be honest, so far at least, i'm not as into it as much as i was into the snes ff games but it beat CT and any other snes rpg hands down. this is prob one of the best rpgs i've ever played...
Re: Dr. Mario & Bacteria Extermination
dr. mario and tetris on a new nintendo system? it's like i'm a kid again... too bad they messed with the fever music (i love the original fever music sooo much)...
Re: Tetris
hell's yes... finally, tetris and dr. mario on a new nintendo system...
Re: Double Dragon
i don't think DD2 and DD3 are releasable in north america. acclaim owned the north american distribution rights and they went under. other companies have bought rights to various things here and there. super double dragon, much like this game, was published by tradewest and if this game is releasable then super double dragon will be as well. honestly, DD3 for the nes was one of the toughest games i ever played. it was practically impossible to make it anywhere in that game...
Re: Forgotten Worlds
one of my fav genesis games as a kid. i never got the capcom arcade collection volume 1 for ps2 for some reason so i'll definitely pick this one up...
strangely enough, capcom used the same type of controls in eco fighters and that game is also an amazing shooter (if not the best shooter that i have ever played)...
Re: Double Dragon
no way............ i can't wait for this. this game was amazing...
Re: Commodore 64 coming to Virtual Console
the c64 had a few good games. i had hundreds of them (back then, piracy was kinda a way of life and everyone just copied games onto disks for everyone else)... but yeah, when nes came out, we all stopped playing c64 because the games were a ton more complex and interesting and you didn't have to wait a half hour to load 'em up.
still, a few c64 games i remembered fondly were:
turrican,
predator (prob the best c64 i owned)
robocop (the nes is better ... damn ocean software... i could never beat level 1 for some reason because i had no idea where to go. still the music was amazing),
spy hunter (best version of this game. the nes one was horrible),
G.I.Joe (the game rocked. it was hard but damn good fun),
forgotten worlds,
Re: WiiWare and Retro Gaming
never ever got a chance to play either ps1 castlevania game sadly... the last one i owned was castlevania 4 for snes (still one of the best games i ever played...) oh well... if SotN is released, I would dropo everything and buy it that instant... maybe they could save space in a number of ways so that it could work as a wiiware title. I don't understand why they didn't up the hard drive to a gig or something more practical...
Re: WiiWare and Retro Gaming
would be nice if they did updated versions of the gba metroid games or a new 2d metroid altogether... also, SotN and the other one (Castlevania Chronicles i think it's called) would be nice and easily done with this wiiware service. maybe square might shine to doing wiiware versions of FF games or Dragon Quest games or at least releasing some of those awesome enix games from the snes...
Re: Super R-Type
i read somewhere that this is a semi-port or r-type 2 but with an added intro level and a missing level or two. in order to increase the already insane difficulty, they got rid of the mid level checkpoints, making this game impossible at times (unless you're the shmup master). there are a lot of reviews floating around the net that are really hard on this game (especially when compared to r-type 3 for snes). it was an early release on the snes and shmups were already starting to loose some popularity at the time. i remember seeing gradius 3 (to me, the greatest of all snes shmups) and thunder force 2 and this game on store shelves for less then $20 canadian only months after being released (which at that time was practically unheard of because all snes games and most genesis games were often between $60 and $70 canadian for the first few years). still, if you liked the other two r-types and you're an r-type pro by now, then by all means... it's prob the last r-type that can be released for vc unless we get some sort of wii ware release (despite r-type final being the last game in the series)
