Re: Landstalker

deggs

a classic game that i never got to play because i had sold my genesis by the time copies had started making their way over here in canada at flea markets...

still, i know people who owned it. i'd always ask about it because it looked so cool at the time. the response was always "yeah it's fun but also frustrating"...

towards the end, the jumps supposedly get on your nerves but i still want to get it and give it a chance.

also, i'm still waiting for Crusader of Centy... we have this, we have beyond oasis... where's centy at?

Re: Games we hope never get released on the Virtual Console

deggs

yeah, silver surfer for the nes... hardest game evarrrrr...

Gypsie, when clayfighter came out, it was fun... at the time, there were sooo many fighting games that took themselves way too seriously. at least clayfighter had a sense of humor...

but yeah, pitfighter... freakin awful. i have the Pitfighter port for the orgininal gameboy. that's up there with awful games alongside Ultima: Runes of Virtue...

one game that's made a lot of people's worst game list is Total Recall for the nes. I have to say, I owned it. It wasn't terrible. It wasn't great but it wasn't that bad either. It was pretty much impossible to beat though...

Re: Games we hope never get released on the Virtual Console

deggs

heroes of the lance was attrocious... i was so hyped when i found it in a pawn shop one day (a game based one dragonlance? too good to be true)... it was true alright... i was pissed when it sucked sooooooo hard

One game that should definitely be added to the list is Ultima: Runes of Virtue for the original game boy. Now this game had the worst graphics of any game i have ever seen (including all of the colecovision and atari and c64 games)... the playable characters were stickmen. the game had no point, no discernable plot and was boring as hell... Runes of Virtue is proably THE WORST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED (that's saying a lot because I too did own ET for Atari)...

Re: Mega Man

deggs

to me, mega man is definitely one of the (if not the) greatest game franchises of all time. As kids, we played mega man 2 and 3 unend... As i got older, I was able to find all of the nes and snes games (except this one) in pawn shops. They are all amazing in some way though the one that stands out the most (and not necessarily in a good way) is of course this one, the first of the series (as is often the case).

I finally got the opportunity to check this one out in the anniversary collection (though that collection is known for it's poor emulation of this game in particular). That said, I found this one by far the toughest of the series. It also had some of the best music of the series (but the tunes really only sounded good on the gameboy partial port of this game and mm2, Mega Man's revenge). As expected, the graphics were by far the worst of the whole mega man franchise but still comparable to games from that time (remember that this is one of the earlier nes games. There were a lot of awful looking 3rd party games in the very early days of the nes).

The level design is often an exercise in frustration. Some stages are super easy while others are near impossible. Still, this is the beginning of one of the most prolific series in video game history. If you don't have a playstation 2/3 or xbox/xbox 360 and don't have access to the mm anniversary collection or mmx collection, then you might contemplate getting this game (note that the controls for the mm anniversary collection were all messed up on the gamecube for some reason. the two buttons were swapped and playing these games with the gamecube controller kinda sucked). Still, I recommend you hold off until mega man 2 comes out (at the time it was released, mega man 2 was prob one of the (if not the) most fun titles to be released for the nes)

If you're new to the series, wait for mega man 2, 3, 5, 7, X or X3 before judging the series as a whole because those are probably some of the best titles it ever produced. If you like any of those games, then check this one out for sure. Just be wary of having this one be your first mega man game…

Re: Yoshi

deggs

It was fun back in the day. i bought the cartridge used for $4 only a year after it came out...
Honestly, if you're into puzzle games, pick up Columns, Dr. Mario, the puyo puyo clones (Dr. Robotnik's mean bean machine or Kirby's Avalanche) or wait for Yoshi's cookie. This one is only alright (but it does have an interesting twist the whole puzzle game thing and that can take a little time getting used to it at first).

Re: Star Soldier

deggs

I had this game... I loved it. It was hard but it was fun. However, it's nothing near the awesomeness that is the tg16 star soldier games (which were absolutely stellar). I remember buying it for $15 back in the day for the nes so I don't know how good a deal it would be buy it for 500 points...

Still, it's a fun game and it is great to see the origins of this amazing series. Still, the top down shmups weren't that great until the 16 bit era (salamander/life force excepted)...

If you want a solid top down view shmup, wait for Life Force/Salamander. Now that game was one of the best for the nes...

Re: Columns

deggs

actually, now i'm told that magic jewelry is actually a taiwanese fake version of the original columns for sega master system... oh well, both those versions were good though

Re: Columns

deggs

the game rocks... some people don't like it... personally, i remember liking the original "Magic Jewelry" game better just because of its over-the-top cheeez music and the simpler graphics... Still, this one is awesome and a must buy for any fan of puzzle games... sometimes neglected but it truely is up there with tetris, doctor mario, bust a move and Puyo Puyo (two versions of which are available for vc, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and kirby's avalanche) as one of the greatest puzzle games ever.

Re: Super Turrican

deggs

if this is actually meant to be, it's amazing but me thinks it may be wrong...

Factor 5 is an exclusive developer for sony at the moment. these turrican games could very well be for the Sony ps3 download service...

i honestly am putting this in the "i'll believe it when i see it" catagory of wii vc titles...

but yeah, the game is amazing... both of them... abslutely excellent games. top notch. i had the c64 version growing up. when these came out, i was in heaven...

Re: Lunar Pool

deggs

I LOVE THIS GAME...

IT IS TRUELY AMAZING. one of my favs as a kid. I figured they would never release it for virtual console because I don't know if it was ever officially released stateside (it could be found on the many bootleg compilation game cartidges that were for the original nes. consequently, many of these cartridges actaully damaged the nes when they were used)...

anyways, i can't wait. a simple game but fun as hell. if i still had it, i'd still be playing today... at least now they can make some money from actaully selling it in a legit way

Re: Blazing Lazers

deggs

my god... i remember this game being super amazing when i was a kid. a friend of mine had it and everyone would just hangout at his place playing it for hours and hours

Re: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

deggs

Just a funny thing about this game...

I remember as a kid, a friend figured out a way to use the NES Advantge (it was an old arcade style joystick for the orignal NES) with an elastic band around the joystick, one button on Turbo/rapid-fire and the other button with a taped down eraser on it to create a constant feedback loop to level up.

Somehow we found some cave (and I think we used the jump spell as well) where link would always just jump forward shooting swords, kill an enemy and then jump up, hit a ledge, go back again and repeat the loop...

that made the game more playable... We'd come home from school and link would be levelled up and the game would be much easier...

Re: Super Star Soldier

deggs

I had th original Star Soldier for the NES as a kid. Never played this one though until it was put out on wii VC... Honestly, it reminds of of the original in many ways but the graphics are way better and the game as a whole is much more fun (than the NES "Star Soldier"). For anyone who remembers the original fondly, I recommend this one. There are worse shooters out there nowadays.

Re: Donkey Kong Jr. Math

deggs

i had a version of this game (or a knock off i guess) for commadore 64 as a kid. it's fun (if it's the same game). woth 500 points? maybe not but I'm still gettin it...

Re: ActRaiser

deggs

yeah, this game was amazing back in the day. i'm really hopin for future square-enix titles like soul blazer, brainlord, a north american release of terranigma, robotrek, secret of mana and the nes dragon warrior series...

if they actually decide to translate games (though it isn't likely), i'd love to play 7th saga 2, dragon quest 5 and 6 and FFV in the original snes version...

still, this game does rock and I recommend it to anyone who loved the creativity of the early snes titles. it also had a sequel which i'm told was basically just a platformer.

Re: Kid Icarus

deggs

I'm so happy to finally play this game. I had the Kid Icarus sequel for game boy and that game is loads of fun.

It's too bad Nintendo abandoned this franchise. It was basically the brainchild of Gumpei Yoko (one of the greatest game designers of his time and the main force behind the first 2 metroid games and the designs for the original Gameboy). Once he parted ways with Nintendo to make the wonderswan for Bandai, this series kinda fell wayside but there are rumours of a third game in the series for the Wii at some point in time.

Re: Castlevania

deggs

I used to love this game. It is true that Super Castlevania 4 is somewhat similar to this game and far superior in many respects but this game still manages to stand on its own years later. It is must buy for fans of the early nes/snes/early gameboy series. It is challenging but still fairly fun after all these years and like all other castlevanias that came after it, it too has an amazing and memorable soundtrack...

The one I'm really hoping for right now for VC is Castlevania 3 because I never got to play it at the time (it came out really late in the nes' lifecycle and not too long before Super Castlevania 4). That one is supposed to really build on the foundation of this game while also offering the player the chance to play as different characters and chose different paths.

Re: Commodore 64 games on the Virtual Console

deggs

i wish they would just let you download gb/gba games on vc period. there are so many hidden gems out there that I have to use e-bay for nowadays (and the market is flooded with counterfeit gba games that can't save or brake within two or three plays)...

Re: Super Castlevania IV

deggs

This game is amazing. It was the last Castlevania I played before I stopped playing video games though so I have no idea how it compares to later games in the series. Still, I remember it being absolutely amazing. The level design and graphics were so great and the controls were the best that the castlevania games had ever seen (you could move the whip around any way you wanted to). I remember making it to the rotating level (level 4 i think) and freakin out at how amazing it looked. For 91, those were pretty much the greatest graphics ever seen on a video game console. This game is insanely fun to boot. Also, the music is amazing. The early Konami snes games had some of the best music I have ever heard in a video game. There were times where I would just sit back and enjoy the tunes.

The game I'm really hoping for in virtual console is Castlevania 3 because I never got a chance to play that one (it came out so late in the life of the nes and I had already moved on to Sega Genesis. Still, many remember that game fondly and I hope I get a chance to play it on a console at some point in time.

Re: Commodore 64 games on the Virtual Console

deggs

hmmm, so many awesome c64 games out there... the only ones i remember the titles of were the liscenesed games though

Predator was amazing.
Robocop was great but I could never figure out how to make it past the first level (still, the soundtrack was great. sometimes i'd just let it continue playing to hear the awesome tunes).
Archon was fun
I love the star Wars game.
Airwolf was fun (but hard)
I had some of the Indiana Jones games. they were freakin hard as well)...
Ghostbusters was great
Choplifter was awesome.
pegasus
moon buggy was great

There was this one game where you were an astronaut with a jet pack and you just explored the place in a metroidish way but with minal gravity. no idea what that was called but i loved it...

Re: Contra III: The Alien Wars

deggs

this is prob the best contra game ever made. i remember loving it sooo much when it came out. the two guns feature was awesome too and the gameplay and graphics were top notch

Re: Donkey Kong Country

deggs

i always found this game to be overrated... i remember hearing all the hype and the graphics looked great at the time and all... still, there were games that looked much worse but were way more fun at the time

Re: Space Harrier II

deggs

i remember finding the genesis version for ike $18 not long after it was released. It was fun yet super repetitive. Still, a great game even if didn't really add much to the original other than better graphics. the fact that each level is basically the same but with different colors kinda reminds me of old c64 games...

Re: Metroid

deggs

hmmm, honestly, this game still is prob THE greatest game ever made. it is absolutely amazing. it even holds up today. i've played it so many times it's almost all memorized. a must play for anyone who hasn't yet (you are missing out if you haven't. Vastly superior to Super Metroid and a billion times better than Metroid 2 for the original game boy. I'm told that only the gba metroids can come close to this one in terms of fun factor)

Re: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

deggs

hmmm, this was the first non-c64 video game i ever owned and as much as i liked it at the time, i'll prob never buy it again. The thing is this...

This game is absolutely amazing but it's also hard as hell. It took me years to beat it. Even then, that prob wouldn't have been possible had my buddy not bought a game atlus at some point. This game is hard (or at least for me as a 8-11 year old). It is long. Some palaces are pretty much impossible without a map (and even with one, I remember getting lost a few times). The last boss is hard. I was stuck on him forever. And even though you get 3 lives, the game is an exercise in frustration at times. Sometimes, it becomes a pain just getting to the palace in question because when you resume a saved game, you always start from the beginning.

that said, you shouldn't miss out on this game. It was prob one of the greatest games of all time and it is my second fav zelda, second only to the first zelda game (though i've only played the first 4 zelda games so that doesn't mean much). It was fairly innovative for it's time and it spawned many copycats (such as Gargoyle's Quest). Though it is hard, I still feel it deserved more than 3 stars. I remember being so impressed by those amazing graphics when it came out too (much better than the first Zelda's). Say what you will, this game is a classic and everyone should at least try it out.

still, i'm told that the new video games aren't nearly as challenging as the 8-bit generation so beware because this is one of the most challenging of the bunch and is prob the hardest zelda ever released (but also prob the most interesting of the series). Oh, and a word to the wise... I hope you have a lot of time to spend leveling up because that's a major part of this game as well...

Re: Gradius III

deggs

amazing game. I think it was a launch title for the snes (or at least an early title). Konami had some amazing games in the early snes days (this, contra 3, Super Castlevania 4). Honestly, those were some of the best games of all time. They were more fun than anything else around.

The arcade version of Gradius 3 was next-to-impossible which made many love the snes version more. Still, the arcade supposedly had some 3rd person levels that were taken out for the snes version (but it's not like you could make it to those levels without goin through $10 in quarters). Also, some of the levels were modified and the graphics weren't quite as good in this version. That said, I remember this version of the game as being one of the greatest games ever.

There was a Gradius 3 and 4 compilation for the ps2 with the arcade versions and a Gradius comp for the psp with the arcade versions of Gradius 1,2 (not msx), 3, 4, and Gradius Gaiden (it was released only for the Japanese ps1). I really hoped that this would make it over to the PS2 but no such luck.

Still, can't wait for this one

Re: Ghouls 'n Ghosts

deggs

this game was far superior to the "super ghouls and ghosts" game for snes. It was a little easier (as the snes game was near impossible). Honestly, I loved this game as a kid. It prably is the best ghosts n goblins game in the main series. Now, all we need is for them to release Demon's Crest and Gargoyles Quest 2 (the two console games of the gargoyle's quest spinoffs of the ghosts n' goblins series). The gargoyle's quest games were amazing and superior to these games in every respect. Those games had the dark atmosphere of Castlevania II "Simon's Quest", mixed with the towns and palaces of a game like Zelda II "The Adventures of Link" mixed with the amazing capcom level design of a game like Mega Man 2. Honestly, if they release Demon's Crest and Gargoyle's Quest 2 for VC, they would be 2 of the best games of the bunch...
