i'm getting this for sure. i loved the nes original (in uni residence, that game was a religion. tons of people were playing it in the common rooms all day and night) and i'm definitely gonna love this one. i still play it on gameboy now and then.
looks like a heavily updated version of the original star soldier (which actually wasn't that bad a game. i got it for nes almost 2 decades ago but i still was playing until my nes got stolen). still, this and dr. mario look amazing. i actually don't plan on getting many wiiware titles but these updated versions of classic games looks kinda fun
I wouldn't exactly call it a run n' gun. it's more like mega man without the stage select... it's a platform game (and I truly love platform games). the story is over-the-top camp, which is awesome. afterall, it's a game with a protagonist made of green balls...
anyways, the game is fun. end of story. i played it expecting to loath it (one of the few in the sega genesis collection for ps2 i never thought of trying until recently). instead, i couldn't stop playing it all night. if you're into platforming goodness a la mega man, you just might love this too...
yeah, i gave in and got mean bean machine earlier on. if they keep the japanese girl yelling stuff, i'll soooo buy this one though (that's the best part of the game which makes it a must get for me for some reason...)
i'm happy this has finally been released as i'll probably buy it now... still, i really hope that we're one step further to getting Guardian Legend released... at this point though, things don't look that promising for a Guardian Legend vc release in North America, which is sad because I always wanted that game but couldn't find it until after my nes got stolen...
to be honest, this game lost my interest at times... like the review says, it gets kinda hard in the later caves/dungeons... still, i'll prob get it because, for what it was, it was truly a great game and well worth the money. though, the one i really can't wait for is zoda's revenge, this one will surely tide me over...
by the way, i did like zelda 1 and 2 better but that's just me... zoda's revenge was supposed to be better than all 3 of those games but i was never been able to find a copy before my nes was stolen...
the best nes zelda-like game that i played in my nes days was Crystalis by SNK... if they release that, that one should def be a must get game...
thing is, the button config on the game cube version of anniversary collection and X collection is really annoying though... i guess that's why i forgot it was around
the best nes hockey game at the time... still, stanley cup for snes was likely the best hockey game i ever played but before that, there was this and my friends and i played it much too much considering how simple the thing is... i guess it could still be playable today...
i wonder if they're going to keep the "act against aids" screen in?
gets 5 stars from me not just for being puyo puyo but for also having better music than mean bean machine and the kirby's avalanche as well as cool japanese arcade style sound effects...
this is also good because this means that capcom is still on track in releasing stuff for vc... i'm really hoping for gargoyle's quest 2 at some point in time
one of the greatest games of all time. this is one of the "perfect" mega man games alongside mega man 5 and mega man X and possibly mega man 3 (just my opinion of course). If you only get three or four megaman games, I would recommend those ones (megaman X being the best of the bunch and one of the greatest video games ever created). if you have an xbox or 360 or PS2, you should hunt down the Mega Man Anniversary Collection and likewise, the Mega Man X collection is also available for PS2. I pretty much bought a PS2 just for those two sets. Each set offers like 10 games (or thereabouts) for cheap (i got them both off of ebay for under 20 bucks US)...
i remember when this came out. it blew me away at the time. it was probably the greatest platformer next to metroid at the time. after nes and snes games started going for cheap, i built up an amazing collection of mega man games, only to have them all stolen... luckily the ps2 collections were released though. honestly, the ps2 collections are the way to go... they're much cheaper than buying each game individually for the virtual console. also, mega man 8, x4, x5, x6, the mega man fighting games and Battle & Chase are included in those collections and none of those games were ever released for any nintendo console as far as i know (though none are as fun as the originals in my humble opnion but i guess that's just the childhood nostalgia talking...). what i'm really hoping for is mega man 64 because i never actually got to play that one back in the day...
i'd say that the one and only complaint anyone could make about this game (when you compare it to other mega man nes games at least) is that you can't charge your weapon like you can in mm4 and higher. other than that, everything is pretty much amazing. great level design. fun bosses and some of the best music the nes had to offer (every now and then, i still hear dance mixes of the music from this game remixed by djs and stuff)... it's definitely worth the 5 bucks if you don't have as ps2...
haha, yeah this is soooooooo christmas 1990... me and all the other spoiled brats in my neighborhood got a genesis before everyone else. it was an amazing game at the time. this, forgotten worlds, ghouls and ghosts, thunder force 2 and super hang on were some amazing games back in the early days of genesis. i'd play these things for hours. i just remember being shocked at mow much better everything looked compared to the oldschool nes games i owned. i love that "power up" at the time (i was a kid and easily amused)... anyone remember that cheesy rave track that sampled that? so cheeeeeeeze... the memories...
nba jam TE on snes (up to four players) = best basket ball game ever... but it'll never happen. they had a ton of actual player stats and copyright issues if they were to release that one... oh well
i had this as a kid... i liked it at the time (in fact, it was one of those nes games that pretty much everybody had in their collection no matter how small it was). we'd spend afternoons drinking crystal pepsi, playing this, and watching "Gleaming the Cube" and "Max Headroom"...
would i buy it today? prob not. the sequel always looked kinda fun. i might give that a try if it comes out. this was entertaining for me as a kid in the 80s but to be honest, there isn't much depth to this game. that doesn't mean it isn't any good, it just means that you might get tired of it fast. the sequel looked interesting as it was more of an adventure game or something (i.e., totally different than this). this game was basically just Summer Games (C64/atari) but with skateboards...
honestly, can't wait for this and ys III. i hope this means that other nihon falcom games are on their way as well (actually the only two falcom games i really really really really really want are faxanadu and ys 3 but i'll be happy to check out the rest of 'em)...
to be honest, i loved the first one and the magic jewelry ripoff version. but the formula seemed perfected at that. i am a little curious though but not enough to buy. that said, the first one is amazing and is avaible in the sega genesis collection that most of us have already...
at least we're getting some more taito games. bring on the Lufia and Darius and Chases HQ (i really loved chase hq 2 for sega genesis... that game rocked. i would love to own it again...)
to be honest, if the wii had a bigger hard drive, i'd hands down go with the turbo cd version because i kinda like the music i've heard for that one and music is a major part of the gaming experience for me. still, i have no idea at this point. though and i'm glad i didn't rush out and get the MD version right away because i had a feeling this might happen...
Now all we need is Gargoyle's Quest 2 (the game I always wanted but never truly got a chance to beat) and Demon's Crest (which is one of my fav games of all time that I still play regularly)...
the gargoyle's quest spin off series really was amazing. now that were done with the g n' g series, maybe capcom will start releasing the two non handheld GQ games.
Why can't we get gradius 2? lame... if there ever was a game i would love to get translated, it would be that one... (and of course Castlevania: Rondo of Blood)
i remember this game as a kid. even in the late 80s, or whenever it was that i got it, it was being sold in discount bins (this and that other square nes pre ff racing game that kinda sucked as well)... still, the video makes it look more fun than i remember. maybe i was just coparing it to ff at the time i guess?
you guys are hard on this sucker. i started replaying it about ten years ago. once and i couldn't put it down. you can def see the early sparks of the sotn and rondo of blood gamestyle in this one. honestly, it's much better than most of the junk they put out back than...
i'm truely hoping dr. mario has the 4 player splitscreen multiplayer that was available for the n64. i wonder if some of the other cancelled games are going to become wario ware titles
Honestly, this game is sooooo much more fun than Revenge of Shinobi (which I had as a kid). I truly enjoy playing this one so much more (better level design and great, fun bosses. you get the sense that they actually put a lot of effort into this one where as, Revenge always kinda felt like it was a rush-to-launch title with a massive hodge podge of unbeatable levels and little story explaining how you got from point A to point B).

The controls in this one though have that fairly fragile feeling to them a lot of the time which is fine for a game like this because I always pictured ninja masters being all about the balance and subtle attacks. This is by far the best shinobi game i have ever played (though all I know is this, Revenge of, Shadow Dancer and the tengen cart for the nes which was gawdawful)... if i could give it 4.5, i would. this is still one of the genesis games that I still play over 10 years later...
this game is supposedly legenday. many call it one of the best run n' guns of all time. i really hope it comes to north america because i want to see what the hype is about...
i can't wait for this one. i really hope it's true and not just speculation. i just bought Double Dragon 2 for the original gameboy off of ebay (which was originally a japan-only sequel to this game that had the sprites and music changed to make it more double dragon-like for it's north american release). that game is amazing (though super short)
this game isn't that bad. it's just that there's better similar games around. 2 stars might be a little harsh but it is pretty much an atari/c64 style game with not that much to it (and it is fairly tough. as a kid it took me years to get anywhere in this game. still, i played it over and over and over...)
i'm curious about this one. i love beat 'em ups and in beat 'em up land, capcom always delivers (X-men: mutant apocalypse, knights of the round, dungeons and dragons: tower of doom, magic sword, king of dragons, captain commando, etc...).
i remember when i was younger, i played this a lot in the arcade and i think i rented this port a few times. still, i can't remember how good the port actually was. i remember final fight 2 rocked but i can't for the life of me remember anything about this port.
meh... i'll just wait until final fight 2 i guess. at least i have the streets of rage games to tide me over...
does anyone remember if mighty final fight had two player co-op?
yeah, some of the early sega arcade translations to the genesis are extremely similar. this is basically space harrier 2 with a helicopter (and it looks even more dated that sh2 as well).
still, it is good fun. this is basically a perfect example of the arcade vibe in the late 80s. a lot of the sega arcade games back then were basically just the next extension of the atari/c64 style gaming (progressing through similar looking levels but with slightly different enemy sprites and slightly different colored backgrounds) but with much better graphics. i still play this one now and again. it is tons of fun for those who remember it fondly despite how simplistic it is and how bad it looks (especially by today's standards).
you can basically beat the whole game by moving back and forth and holding the fire button (especially since either every 3rd or 4th [i can't remember] bullet that is shot out of your cannons is heat seeking...). still, it is fairly fun and addictive in that atari type of way. Every time i finish a game, i'm always tempted to just play again and again.
also, if you grew up with these types of games in the 80s, you'll be fond of the soundtrack. it gets stuck in my head all the time. again, it just sounds like 80s video game music but i mean, that's an amazing genre in and of itself. a lot of the early genesis choons kinda sounded the same but they were sooo much fun.
all that said, i can't recommend this one for the kids of today or anyone who didn't really get into it the first time around. i realize that my love for this game is based purely in nostalgia. it's like trying to explain to kids today why pong and donkey kong and defender 2 and joust were the best games ever... if you can't appreciate that then this one definitely isn't for you (and neither is space harrier 2). lol… but if you had this one as a kid just as the genesis came out and you loved it then, you may still love it now regardless of how ridiculous the buildings in level 1 look…
yeah, the one major drawback to old casino games is that there's no hold'em because this was before hold'em was super popular. still, at the time, i remember liking this game a lot...
2 stars is prob a bit harsh but this game is more on the same plain as a decent c64 game than up tot he typical standards of a nes game. it's super simple... not much to it but it's still fun as heck. i guess maybe the nostalgia is clouding my judgement... still, i feel it deserves 5 stars. sometimes the most fun is from the simplest ideas... now if taito were just allowed to release arkanoid for vc, we'd be set
yeah, the comparisons between this game, castlevania 2: simon's quest and Gargoyle's quest are fair...
This is prob the most challenging out of the three but still well worth the buy.like i said above, it's my second fav zelda (second only to the first one). but, like the other games i mentioned, once you beat these games, you will likely never go back. the first time, it's fun exploring and beating the game. the second time through, they're just frustrating...
still, the game deserves a 4.5 rating (DEFINITELY NOT A 3). i'll give it a high 4 stars
"The equivalent of Error in Castlevania II is probably the woman with the single most botched line in the game: "Hit Deborah Cliff with your head to make a hole." That is actually supposed to mean "Duck at Deborah Cliff with the Red Crystal equipped." I honestly have no idea how that got through." - Drake
I was stuck at that for ages... i had no idea what to do and the internet wasn't really that popular yet (if it was even around at the time). i think i found the answer one day when they finnaly had an article on this game in one of those "How to win at video games" books from the 80s. i found the book in a bookstore and was so overcome with joy that i insisted my parents drive me home immediately so i could get further in the game... (that's how addictive the game was at the time. back in the 80s, this was by far one of the best games ever made)...
i only ever really got to know the first three metroid games. i liked them all to a certain degree but the first one will always be my fav... this one looks better and the music is amazing and it is extremely fun but there's just something about how amazing the first one was when compared to any other video game released before it... it was a true landmark game...
this one improves on the first one in a lot of ways. it is a little easier because of the new map feature but there still are a lot of frustrating areas. i think it's probably the best entry point into the series for anyone who is new to the 8-bit and 16-bit generation games...
though it is fun, metroid 2 is probably (by far) the worst of the series as it lacked a lot fo the creative puzzle solving of the first one and this one. also, some the items in metroid 2 are just simply annoying (the spider ball for examble).
my advice, get this game. if you like it, get the original metroid. and forget metroid 2 ever existed. i'm actually getting into zero mission right now and i'm loving it. it seems to be a good combination of all of the things i loved about this game and the original metroid...
the game was amazing... it was one the best around when it came out... i'll prob skip it and wait until castlevania 3 though... once you beat this one, you prob won't feel the urge to retread through it...
i bought capcom classics 2 for the ps2 to get this game and magic sword and eco fighters...
i remembered this game as being much more easy and a little more fun. that said, the reviewer is right about the genesis version having better looking sprites... the main character looks much better in this version. The game also flows a little better in the genesis version too...
I used to love this game. this, the first contra and contra 3 were all absolutely amazing games...
this one is probably the most challenging of the three.
(i never really got much of a chance to play through contra hardcorps for the genesis but it's supposedly amazing as well)
some stages can be extremely frustrating but like the other contra games, the music is amazing. the music for the fourth stage (it's mostly in 7/8) and fifth stages rock so hard...
konami really was one of the greatest developers for the nes, snes and gameboy. this game is definitely proof of that...

Re: Star Soldier R
looks like a heavily updated version of the original star soldier (which actually wasn't that bad a game. i got it for nes almost 2 decades ago but i still was playing until my nes got stolen). still, this and dr. mario look amazing. i actually don't plan on getting many wiiware titles but these updated versions of classic games looks kinda fun

yeah... i love oldschool shmups but i sadly never got introduced to this game. i really really want it bad (and the sequels would be great as well)

also, if you grew up with these types of games in the 80s, you'll be fond of the soundtrack. it gets stuck in my head all the time. again, it just sounds like 80s video game music but i mean, that's an amazing genre in and of itself. a lot of the early genesis choons kinda sounded the same but they were sooo much fun.
all that said, i can't recommend this one for the kids of today or anyone who didn't really get into it the first time around. i realize that my love for this game is based purely in nostalgia. it's like trying to explain to kids today why pong and donkey kong and defender 2 and joust were the best games ever... if you can't appreciate that then this one definitely isn't for you (and neither is space harrier 2). lol… but if you had this one as a kid just as the genesis came out and you loved it then, you may still love it now regardless of how ridiculous the buildings in level 1 look…
Re: Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
i wonder if we'll get any other japanese-only imports as well? hope so...
Re: Vegas Stakes
yeah, the one major drawback to old casino games is that there's no hold'em because this was before hold'em was super popular. still, at the time, i remember liking this game a lot...
Re: Ghouls 'n Ghosts
yeah, to me, this is the best g n' g games got...
now, let's see some gargoyle's quest games please (gq2 and dc would be amazing at this point and prob the best games on vc)...
Re: Lunar Pool
2 stars is prob a bit harsh but this game is more on the same plain as a decent c64 game than up tot he typical standards of a nes game. it's super simple... not much to it but it's still fun as heck. i guess maybe the nostalgia is clouding my judgement... still, i feel it deserves 5 stars. sometimes the most fun is from the simplest ideas... now if taito were just allowed to release arkanoid for vc, we'd be set
Re: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
yeah, the comparisons between this game, castlevania 2: simon's quest and Gargoyle's quest are fair...
Re: Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Re: Super Metroid
i only ever really got to know the first three metroid games. i liked them all to a certain degree but the first one will always be my fav... this one looks better and the music is amazing and it is extremely fun but there's just something about how amazing the first one was when compared to any other video game released before it... it was a true landmark game...
this one improves on the first one in a lot of ways. it is a little easier because of the new map feature but there still are a lot of frustrating areas. i think it's probably the best entry point into the series for anyone who is new to the 8-bit and 16-bit generation games...
though it is fun, metroid 2 is probably (by far) the worst of the series as it lacked a lot fo the creative puzzle solving of the first one and this one. also, some the items in metroid 2 are just simply annoying (the spider ball for examble).
my advice, get this game. if you like it, get the original metroid. and forget metroid 2 ever existed. i'm actually getting into zero mission right now and i'm loving it. it seems to be a good combination of all of the things i loved about this game and the original metroid...
Re: Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
the game was amazing... it was one the best around when it came out... i'll prob skip it and wait until castlevania 3 though... once you beat this one, you prob won't feel the urge to retread through it...
Re: Gradius III
3 stars?
this is still prob one of my all-time fav snes games and prob one of the most fun games of all time...
Re: Devil's Crush
hmmm,
up until i played this, my fav console pinball was kirby's pinball land (for the original gameboy)...
Re: Strider
i bought capcom classics 2 for the ps2 to get this game and magic sword and eco fighters...
i remembered this game as being much more easy and a little more fun. that said, the reviewer is right about the genesis version having better looking sprites... the main character looks much better in this version. The game also flows a little better in the genesis version too...
Re: Super C
I used to love this game. this, the first contra and contra 3 were all absolutely amazing games...
this one is probably the most challenging of the three.
(i never really got much of a chance to play through contra hardcorps for the genesis but it's supposedly amazing as well)
some stages can be extremely frustrating but like the other contra games, the music is amazing. the music for the fourth stage (it's mostly in 7/8) and fifth stages rock so hard...
konami really was one of the greatest developers for the nes, snes and gameboy. this game is definitely proof of that...
Re: Yoshi's Cookie
i'm definitely getting this one...
i used to love it as a kid. defnitely one of the better puzzlers for the nes
