Re: Review: EDGE (Wii U eShop)

I have this on my phone too, thanks to the wonderful Humble Bundles a few years ago. Really wanted to have this on my 3DS, I though the 3D effect would be wonderful.

Re: Bethesda: The Time For Convincing Publishers And Developers To Support Wii U Is "Long Past"

cammy

It sounds entitled. "We're so special so if Nintendo don't treat us like princesses we're not going to their party. Ever. And they'll party will suck. Because we're not there." Though I have liked Bethesda's games on the PC it's just disappointing to hear they won't even consider the Wii U.

But sadly he's probably right. Nintendo need to be bending over backwards to get these guys and others on their console because it's going to make a massive difference later.

Re: Say Hello To The Nintendo 2DS - A 3DS without 3D

cammy

Given the price... this could be quite clever. My wife and my daughter claim they don't like the "3D" of the 3DS and it's also under the €100. I could imagine buying it for my wife to play pokemon X/Y on or even considering it for my daughter's next birthday (it's within her gift budget).

Certainly as a parent, I'd be more okay buying a €100 device for my 6yo son to play with then buying him a €200+ one.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Should Aim to Produce Mature, Genre-Defining Storytelling Experiences

cammy

This. This would make me buy a Wii U tomorrow.

I know Monster Hunter isn't Nintendo but as an example my ultimate game right now would be something like Elder Scrolls Oblivion with Monster Hunter's combat system. An open world with branching storylines, immerse character development and fun clever combat mechanic.

I find it strange that Nintendo are trying to make the Wii U a console that appeals to "hardcore gamers" but then sticks with updates to their classic franchises and leaves actual "hardcore gamer" titles to third party.

Re: Talking Point: Warren Spector Asks, Where Are Gaming's Grown-Ups?

cammy

I'm not sure I agree with the guy's definition of "mature" and "adult" as many commentators have pointed out that a story with fantastical elements does not mean it can not deal with heavy themes (in fact this is one of the best things about sci-fi and so on dealing with bigger issues through metaphor).

However I do think there is a lot of growth that can happen in computer games. Just look to the choice in boardgames and tabletop roleplaying games. They have their share of the silly and fantastical but also more "real world" inspired stuff and games that purposely challenge players. But what form it takes in computer games is a very big question with a lot of guesswork and risk.

Re: Talking Point: The Download or Disc Dilemma

cammy

I still buy cards because ultimately the cards are cheaper than the downloads even when I'm ordering on line. MH3U was €7 cheaper ordering from Amazon UK with delivery to Ireland then downloading (also cheaper than actually buying it in a local shop too) and €7 isn't worth the "convenience" of downloading, seeing it's also tied to the device. I like the idea of the card being separate from the device because I've had multiple Nintendo devices damaged over the years.

Now if Nintendo had a cloud service where it backed up my save data and downloads and I could just switch device and still access it all... I'd be more willing to pay the extra €7... because you can loose a card!

Re: Nintendo Comes Out On Top In Consumer Experience Poll

cammy

I've had two cases with Nintendo Service, the first was when my Wii got damaged and stopped playing disks. They fixed for free out of warranty - so that's cool.

The second time I've had numerous calls and no resolution. They are very friendly on the phone and I appreciate that - but it's been over year and I'm still waiting for the 3DS I won from their promotion. All they keep telling me it's "high priority" and that someone will call me back in a week... and nothing. It's kind of depressing to hear how good they are in every other aspect.

Re: First Image of Wii U eShop Surfaces

cammy

It's very hard to tell from the sample. Thankfully it isn't the eShop scaled up to HD, that wouldn't work. With a HD screen they should be able to use it in more inventive ways than with the 3DS's smaller screen.

Re: Resident Evil Director Wants To Make a Monster Hunter Flick

cammy

I've mixed feelings about this. MH is definitely a great world to make a movie in, particularly as writers are not constrained by having to use an existing plot. All they need is some of the monsters, a bit of the world and a neat set of heroes.

... but I've see the Resident Evil movies and despite enjoying them in "this-is-so-bad-it's good", that style of movie will only make a mockery of MH, not do it any justice. It'll be an over-the-top plot about the end of the world... with ridiculous characters... when all you want is to see some monsters being bashed by competent heroes and a bit of a emotional buildup.

Re: Mobile Publisher Believes Nintendo Ecosystem May 'Fall Apart'

cammy

Personally I just can't get the same level of intensity playing mobile phone games compared to playing good games on my 3DS. There is a certain race-to-bottom with mobile phone games... there is like 10 version of Angry Birds there on the Android market for example. Making games for the handheld market you know you've got a smaller market... but they are willing to pay and pay significantly more for a good game.

Re: Bigger Nintendo 3DS Console Revealed

cammy

I have mixed feelings about this. I like my 3DS and it feels a bit of a kick in the gut to hear about the XL with longer battery life.

On the other hand, the bigger screen plus stylus would certainly be cool for Colors! 3D and Art Academy. That would be a great application.

Also for watching video clips. Both my kids gather around the 3DS to watch the new Shaun the Sheep - a bigger screen would be great for that. I wonder though will there ever be 3D movies on the 3DS? That would be a big selling point for a bigger 3D screen.

And I have to wonder... how does it compare to the Wii U gamepad? Are they looking at people who'll get the Wii U and want a second gamepad? It's less portable than the 3DS, but I find for many of the games, like Kid Icarus, it's better playing sitting on the sofa than while waiting for a bus.

Re: Amazon UK Lists Wii U at £199.99

cammy

I thought Amazon set a speculative price on such pre-order things and if the actual price is less, they'll adjust it down. I do remember seeing a gaurentee on one item I pre-ordered in the past that if the actual item was higher, they would only charge me the pre-order price.

So £199 converts to about ~€246 currently. I think that might be a bit rich for my tastes until I know it's really worth it.

Re: E3 2012: Our View of Nintendo's E3

cammy

I think Nintendo are being very clever in the information they are presenting across E3. They are carefully showing that the Wii U is not just an upgraded Wii and that the Wii Gamepad is not just a novelty. The presentation did not blow me away, but it carefully pushed back many of the bad memes surrounding the Wii U. They are trying to prevent what happened to the 3DS where people assumed it was a DS with 3D tagged on as a novelty.

That said, I think the Wii U is possible revolutionary. But not in terms of pure gaming. Reggie hinted at in the presentation, "it will change the way you interact with your TV" and he is right. All the research at the moment in TV and social media indicates that people are using tablets and laptops while watching TV and here is Nintendo offering you a tablet connected to your TV, internet capable and with a full moderated social media network. It's going to change how families use their TVs especially supporting streaming services like Amazon and Netflix.

Though I'm very disappointed that there is no mention of price. This is what is holding me back about being excited about the Wii U. It has to be reasonable priced to be a success.
