According to a report by Japanese business publication Nikkei, Nintendo is getting ready to launch an eBook service on its 3DS console.
The service will be limited to Japan initially, and is expected to cover around 300 titles — mainly aimed at children.
There's no word on whether or not a similar approach will be taken in the west, but Nintendo has dabbled in this field before, so who knows?

thats good, now the wii U needs those, region lock free and tvii for europe :3
Ik tvii is hard to come in europe, so i'll have patience. Hope it comes in this summer update
Kindle app on Wii U and 3DS would be awesome - imagine reading ebooks on the gamepad.
The 3DS screen doesn't have a resolution good enough to read ebooks. I only read ebooks on a full hd screen.
Interesting. I did like the ebook app on the DSi. It really depends on what sort of catalogue they have and prices, but combined with MiiVerse and the 3DS form factor as in holding sideways was nice on the DSI was a nice touch, this could be quite nice.
TBH I'm still waiting for Netflix and/or 3D movies for my 3DS
No. With the exception of eInk screens I hate reading text on a screen for any length of time. I don't read books on a tablet, never mind a 3DS.
Nice.
It could be cool for comics and the like, but I would never read a regular eBook on my 3DS. There are reasons eBook readers have eInk displays.
I would love to see comics come to the 3DS ,the XL has the perfect screen size and 3D COMICS would be soo AWESOME ! come on Nintendo make it happen ..
Just do a kindle app. Easy and the infrastructure is already there through Amazon. Sheesh.
Agree with @zenarium , don't think the 3DS is good enough resolution wise to be an ebook reader
There was a DS cartridge called "200 Classic Books" that NA/EU/AU got.
Just let us play text files on WiiU. 300 books isn't going to cut it as there are just too many books out there and too many people who have too many different tastes. Although, there is a workaround to read books on the WiiU using the browser. Just use an online file share service like Google Docs and read your books over the internet. Docs is a little clunky on the Gamepad, but I'm sure there are other sites out there that work better.
I would be nice to have an ereader on the 3DS but I have a Kindle Fire so I am not that worried about it.
"mainly aimed at children." I guess that means no Stephen King???
I don't think it's a bad idea but, if you don't upgrade your SD card, ebooks is pretty much meaningless if you don't have space, and with the amount of games you're downloading from eshop.
Also, reading things off of a 3DS would be a bit challenging, I would definitely say it's more based around 3DS LL users
Honestly, I'd prefer if they just added a Kindle Channel to the Wii U than make a channel themselves. They'll never have as many books after all.
@bezerker99 Dammit.
Aimed at children? Grow up Nintendo!
I read the 100 Classic Books cart on my 3DS, and it's perfectly fine. I want an e-reader.
@cammy
Netflix is already available... O.o
Anyway awesome news, I hope it has enough success to be brought to the West.
Although they probably should've started out with a variety of books for all ages...
@Midnight3DS
Huh, I didn't know that existed.
I enjoyed the Classic Books Collection for the DS(i) and would buy an improved version IF they can convince me that it had been optimised for the 3ds screen. Trying to read the text in things like Monster Hunter 3 (on a 3ds XL) wanted to make my eyes roll back into my head permanantly it hurts so bad
These are supposed to be children books. Not some heavy-duty technical manual readers. For that you have Kindle. To get your kids started on reading, without giving them big device for their hands, this is great!
If being able to read your own .epub files was allowed, I would definitely be on board for this.
For those curious, yes, we will be reviewing all 300 books.
@Philip_J_Reed
I didn't know you can read Japanese. These are Japanese books, right?
@ramstrong
I'm sure we'll pick it up as we go.
AH NAH TAH WAH BAH KAH DAES KAH
Edit: Sorry. Too much Anime influence, it seems.
@WhoBeThat
Sadly Netflix isn't available in Ireland on the 3DS (though it is on the Wii). I had assumed that it wasn't available on European 3DS. I assume they aren't streaming 3D movies are they?
@zenarium: The pixel count is greater than the DS and DSi had when using 100 Classic Book Collection.
@GamerZack7 Still not enough.
I like. Will be the first in line for the ENGLISH edition...!!!
I have a on the DS cart. and it as it was stated above is Just fine on the 3ds.
I would love this for the 3ds SOON...!
I'd be willing to get the app when its released outside of Japan. Wouldn't it be cool if they had the entire Amazon eBook service on there?
Still, I'm more of a fan of tree books
@cammy
Ah, my mistake, didn't know that.
And I don't think the movies are in 3D. That would be AWESOME though. Avatar on 3DS... Heck yeah...
