Re: Review: XType Plus (Wii U eShop)

bubble_bear

"It's no Ikaruga, but XType Plus doesn't need to be; at a bargain bin price.."

I won't support this or any other "bargain bin priced game." I won't support turning home consoles into cheap game ghettos. We have phones and tablets for that.

Re: Yet More Hyrule Warriors Details Coming This Week

bubble_bear

All this hype, and I bet this game ends up being like a 7. And will probably actually only be like a 5 or 6, but will get higher praise for simply looking like Zelda. Not into this idea at all. Nintendo's characters are beloved because of their games, if Ninty continues treating them like costumes they can license out... well I don't know how interested I will continue to be.

Re: Talking Point: The Wii U eShop is Raising Tough Questions on Quality Control

bubble_bear

I do think the Quality Control needs to be tightened up on the eShop. It's starting to feel like a testing ground for really green devs to cut their teeth on, and the results thus far have been very underwhelming. The idea of REALLY CHEAP games just isn't appealing, nor do I think it makes sense on a home console. On a phone? Sure, I get it... You want small portable games that don't cost much and don't take up much time. I bought a Wii U to play videogames at length, and I fully acknowledge that it is a luxury purchase. I didn't shell out $350 bucks to play bargain bin amateur games.

Re: Hardware Classics: Sega Master System

bubble_bear

Bought a Master System last year for pretty cheap at a used games store, and it came with a bunch of the classic games. I tried my best to get into it but none of the games really played that great or were that interesting. I ended up giving it to a friend. I suppose a big reason the NES still seems so great in comparison has a lot to do with nostalgia, but I also think that Nintendo just knew how to make better games... and well still does!

Re: Video: More Mighty No. 9 Footage Arrives to Tempt Us

bubble_bear

@Ralizah The level design complaints appear to be valid regardless of dev time. Animations may get tweaked or enemy placement swapped, but the skeleton of the levels probably won't change that much if they already have them textured and polished... Run, jump over box... climb ladder... jump over box. Snore.

Re: Talking Point: Should Nintendo Be Promoting The Wii U GamePad As A Tablet Killer?

bubble_bear

Tablet killer? Uhh nope. Its just not an intuitive system. My parents both have iPads and play games, watch movies, browse the web, etc. I brought the Wii U over and they were thoroughly confused and underwhelmed. They couldn't figure out when to press what buttons, or what screen to look at. I love my Wii U, but I think it was just poorly thought through, in terms of being appealing to the casual crowd, and being thr successor to the Wii.

Re: Nintendo Executive Suggests Wii U is at a "Tipping Point" Towards Success

bubble_bear

I must say I haven't been feeling this optimistic about my Wii U or Nintendo in a while. This year's E3 did a lot to change that, and for me, it had less to do with content and more so the tone and vibe of the delivery. The previous E3's felt a bit "out of touch" with the execs in cat ears last year, and Reggie spewing buzz term nonsense about the Wii U the year before. This year they managed to seem more up to date and modern than the Sony conference and yet still keep their classic "fun for everyone" mantra in place. Let's keep this momentum up Ninty!

Re: Guide: The Biggest Wii U and 3DS Retail Games Coming In 2014

bubble_bear

Not bad. My big complaint with the Wii U thus far has less to do with the amount of content available, and more to do with the gameplay. So far everything we've gotten from Nintendo has largely been very arcade-y. I want something I can dive into, take my time, and explore. Pikmin was a nice dose of that, but didn't really satisfy the itch. Seems like I'll have to wait for 2015.

Re: E3 2014: Nintendo Hopes to Share Metroid News in the "Near Future"

bubble_bear

This sounds like we won't see a Metroid for quite a while if they're only at the "discussion" point of the development process. Sigh. Don't get me wrong, I think Nintendo did pretty well this E3, but the priority they are giving to Mario, Kirby, and Yoshi currently is getting a bit old. I heard the word "cute" used around 1,200,230,230 times during the Treehouse Live stuff. Nintendo, you have the franchises to make for a versatile balanced lineup, please use them!

Re: Microsoft's Ken Lobb: Metroid Prime Wouldn't Have Been Made If Nintendo Had Listened To The Fans

@minotaurgamer

How is the Wii U comparable to N64 or Gamecube? I would argue the problem with the Wii U is that it's too similar to the Wii, except a whole lot less elegantly put together (aka it's clunky). I don't think fanboys had anything to do with Nintendo's decision to make the Wii U, it was money. They wanted Wii sales again. Look at the current and slated 1st party releases for the Wii U and they almost mirror the successful games released for Wii... New Super Mario Bros., Wii Party U, Wii Fit U, Mario Kart, Smash Bros.

"2. A Diablo/Champions of Norath type game....where 1-4 players use pro controllers and play hack and slash on the big screen while the dungeon master uses the Gamepad to control/create the dungeons. The DM sets traps, alters the maps, places random encounters and then plays as the bosses during the boss battles."

This. This is the kind of stuff I'd love to see happening on the U. The asymmetrical game play stuff was what really captured my attention in the first place. They gave us such as small taste of it at the beginning with Mario Chase, Ghost Mansion, and even ZombiU, but since then the game pad implementation has been pretty minor. I think you've really hit the point home that people should be seeing the gamepad as an outlet of creativity and new concepts instead of just... a portable version of the big screen.

If Nintendo is going to plow their own path, as they are seemingly determined to do. They need to go all the way, and lead the charge. Coming off the heals of the mega-successful game-changing Wii, I think Nintendo was amped up on the idea of further stretching the boundaries of console gaming, and for that I applaud them. Unfortunately, after the first launch titles it seems as though they changed course and opted to play it really safe instead.I still can't believe how minor a role the game pad played in Super Mario 3D World and the new DK. To me that sends a mixed message to not only the consumer, but also other devs - "Welp we can't really think of cool ways to use this really expensive bulky device we insisted would really change the way you played games a year back... but here's some great games we think you're fairly familiar with instead."

Re: Ronimo Games: PS4 And Xbox One Are More Of The Same, But Wii U Is "Something New"

@QuickSilver88

I totally agree that Nintendo is integral to video game culture, but I also don't think that gives them a free pass for a pretty disappointing console launch and release library. I have no interest in really comparing the Wii U with the PS4 or Xbone, as I do think the Wii U is a different beast. But being different doesn't equal better. I've yet to see Nintendo use the game pad in a meaningful way that isn't a mini-game, ala Nintendoland or Wii U Party. Journey, for PS3, was one of the most unique experiences I've had in a game in some time, and I played it with a good ol' Dualshock. I think Nintendo is starting to assume that new / weird accessories make for new experiences, which I just don't think holds up over time. New games make for new experiences.

Re: Ronimo Games: PS4 And Xbox One Are More Of The Same, But Wii U Is "Something New"

bubble_bear

@Action51

Well I do think it's a tad early to start calling out the PS4 and Xbone, as they haven't been out in the wild very long at all. Regardless, I own a Wii U and since Nintendoland I haven't seen anything that I would call "innovative." I've played some great games,sure, but I wouldn't call very polished platformers "revolutionary."

And I think you should be careful with the "Sequels and "more of the same"" argument, as Nintendo are also very guilty of that as well. I would venture to say the PS3 offered just as many, if not more new franchises and experiences as the Wii did. Don't let the Killzones and Titanfalls blind you to a lot of great games that have hit the non-Nintendo systems, that's like somebody saying "Nintendo only has Mario!" Which we all know to be false.

Re: Nintendo Passing on PAX East 2014

bubble_bear

I'm not holding my breath for E3 anymore. I was convinced they would blow the roof off last year, and instead we got a Nintendo Direct that showed us mostly what we already knew. Nintendo is in a weird place these days.

Re: ReVeN's Kickstarter is Funded, With GamePad Features Available as a Stretch Goal

@audiobrainiac

That's my beef with this type of scenerio - it reeks of "business" money-making mentality. These guys are going to make a ton of money off of people, not because they have fostered an awesome new concept, game mechanic, or interesting art direction, but simply because they are making a clone of Metroid. Their company name is Varia Games! Are we even sure Nintendo will allow this to be released? There is plenty of originality in the world! Step out from your nostalgia cave for a moment and you will notice many NEW games that are pushing video games in new directions - Kentucky Route Zero, Gone Home, Nidhogg... These are the kind of forward-thinking, innovative indie titles that should find a home on a Nintendo system. Not clones of first party franchises.
