Re: Pokémon Shuffle Available to Download Right Now, for Free, in Europe

Tryken

There are free to play models I'll support, but time gating is not one of them. I refuse to play a game that tells me I have to take a time out unless I give it money. It'd be different if there were convenience items only bought with gems. Maybe you'd gain experience faster or unlock cool bonuses, but it won't get my money like this. That's for sure.

Re: Review: Bases Loaded (Wii U eShop / NES)

Tryken

Wh-what!? 5 out of 10? Bases Loaded is absolutely one of the best baseball games on the NES, right up there with RBI Baseball. I still plug in Bases Loaded (2 more than 1, admittedly) in my NES for good times.

Re: Screenshots Disabled in Comic Workshop Miiverse Community

Tryken

This has caused comic maker to lose my sale instantly. To have an art program without the ability to directly share images gives me no motivation to use a 3DS-centric art tool. If I have to go through all the trouble to put it on an SD card and share it through my PC, I'd rather just use my PC to create art.

I understand where Nintendo is coming from; however, this is another example of Nintendo becoming too much of a mother bear.

Re: Kotaku Says YES to the Wii U - Rejoicing Begins

Tryken

I usually go to Kotaku to be made to feel guilty about my race and gender. Seriously, though, their constant political rants made me leave them as a reader. Not that there aren't issues to talk about, but it was getting out of hand. It's really one of the worst websites on the internet.

Anyway, I AM glad, though, for the Wii U! It's a system that's definitely budding. People keep chanting "third party," but that's not what Nintendo has ever been about. I think them recapturing second party was a smart idea. Sell your system by exclusives. The third party stuff will come later.

Re: Hyrule Warriors Screenshots and Gameplay Details Emerge

Tryken

Please, I don't need this website to be KotakuLife. I don't mind a jab here and there at the sort of "interesting" character design they chose for the villainous looking woman, but considering your recent editorials, I think it'd be better to lay off the social commentary--even in jest for a while.

Re: Nintendo Lifts The Lid On Its Plans For E3 2014

Tryken

It's E3, they're going to have something up their sleeves. They don't need to flood us with a thousand brilliant mind blowing titles, just a well presented couple and it could do a lot for them. It's time to introduce the world to Star Fox U, F-Zero U, Metroid U, and then finish it all off with the new Zelda.

Re: Soapbox: Ignoring The Objectification Of Women In Games Won't Make the Problem Go Away

Tryken

You know, I come to Nintendolife to avoid the overly-politically-correct blog spam of Kotaku and other Gawker websites.

Why don't we address Dante's design from Devil May Cry? What about animes like "Free"? Kuroko no Basket? What about the massive objectification and slash of the two brothers in Supernatural? Shirtless Thor? One thing I really like about Japan, especially in anime, is that they're not afraid to appeal to both female and male sexuality. Yet here we immediately throw out a political correct card and go conservative here. It doesn't bother me if exaggerated males are presented for the entertainment of women. I think women are smart enough to separate fantasy from reality. Why isn't this credit given to men?

The problem with the "this game has over-the-top sexy girls, therefor it advances the objectification of women" is that 1.) It's a slippery slope fallacy and 2.) It stifles expression in art. Does killing droves of people in GTA cause respect for the law to decrease in reality? No, it doesn't. Does porn convince you that when you get pizza delivered by a blonde she should rip her top off? No, because it's fantasy meant for entertainment. It's just important that those who are mature enough to separate fantasy and reality play it. And at the end of the day? Just like WesCash said, it has the right to exist. You don't get to fight for video games being an art and then turn around and start censoring it. It's hypocritical. If a certain piece of art doesn't appeal to you for a personal reason, don't buy it.

Please don't become like Kotaku and start witch hunting whatever politically correct topic is currently trending at the time, especially one as false-positive as this one.

Re: Video: The Dubious Charm Of Senran Kagura Burst Is Explained In Thirty Slightly Awkward Seconds

Tryken

I plan to get this in a few paychecks. Everyone's trying to be a white knight about it. It's a solid game with fanservice. Big deal? The stereotype must be that only basement dwelling neckbears play this game, but it's a false generalizations. Anecdotal evidence only, neither my wife nor I mind playing this. Would I let my kid play it? Not a chance. But I also wouldn't let him watch Rated PG13/R movies or anything else with mature content. That doesn't make this game bad.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Direct Pointed to Another Wii U Retail Drought

Tryken

I've always been able to get my indie game fix on my PC through one of the 9 million Humble Indie Bundles or Steam Sales. I'll still get certain indie titles on the Wii U (especially exclusives), but I don't feel like I'm being "held over."

Do you know what would tide me over? A trailer from one of the following franchises: Metroid, Star Fox, F-Zero.

This might sound like I'm asking for a lot, but I'm not. I just want to KNOW that one of those three universes are in development. I love Super Mario 3D World, it's one of the best ever made. Mario kart 8 is going to be awesome and will probably completely destroy my life in its playtime. But how is it that Nintendo keeps asking, "Why aren't we attracting hardcore gamers?" and everyone is shouting, "METROID, STAR FOX, F-ZERO," they go, "Hmm... They must want... More Donkey Kong Country Returns!"

Of course, that doesn't fix the myriad of problems with the marketing and how it'll get bigger appeal, but at least satisfy your hardcore following, Nintendo by touching on the franchises you keep ignoring.

I say this, and it sounds so pessimistic, but I'm convinced Nintendo does have one of those franchises in production but isn't ready to speak about it yet. I don't think they're ready to retire Metroid, Star Fox, and F-Zero. It's probably just too early to bring it up, and the Nintendo Direct wanted to focus on the releases that were shown at E3, nothing wrong with that. But soon, Big N, soon, give me that announcement I'm looking for.

Re: Harvest Moon: Connect To A New World Shows Us How To Get Started

Tryken

I buy pretty much every Harvest Moon game on release (and I started playing it on the SNES), and I have to say... I've really been liking how they're handling the series now since New Beginning. Tale of Two Towns was a huge letdown to me (stale dialogue, the towns took insane amounts of time to travel between until you got the cave open). But they've really been turning the series around again in good ways.

Now if only a new company could pick up and continue the greatness that is Rune Factory, I'd be even happier.

Re: Mighty No. 9 Studio Comcept Facing Fan Backlash Over Community Manager Appointment

Tryken

Those who are saying, "People are mad because they hired a woman" are changing the topic falsely. If the worry was that she's a woman, wouldn't have the complaints began upon hiring music designer Manami Matsumae? Yet everyone celebrated her coming onto the team.

So logic concludes there must be another reason this particular woman is receiving such backlash. The answer is that she's a political warrior who's known to push a variety of political issues into games. It's not that social political issues should never be in video games, but do they belong in a family game like Mega Man? I think not, and personally I disagree with hiring her if it's she's going to push a certain political agenda into the game, simply because I don't think Mighty No. 9 is the proper arena for this kind of commentary.

With that said, it's difficult to know what kind of impact she'll have on this project. Maybe she won't be pushing any kind of agenda, in which case we're all sitting here bickering amongst ourselves for nothing. Only time will tell.

Re: Reggie Fils-Aime Confirms Playable Cranky Kong and Release Date for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Tryken

Showing this off was like a giant prank or a joke. What is NoA thinking? They went to a hardcore gamer award show (aka their biggest critics) and show what? A new playable character in a game that was already considered a massive disappointment on its original announcement. Donkey Kong has literally fooled everyone twice who was expecting Star Fox, F-Zero, Metroid, etc.

Re: Full Screen Mario Web Game Closed Down Following Nintendo's Copyright Complaint

Tryken

I'm fine with its removal, since it is copyright infringement and Nintendo is protective of their brand, but the popularity of this should have made Nintendo think, "Geez, people sure do love the original Mario with a random level generator. Could you imagine the replay value of a remix mode like that?" But we'll most likely never see it. And maybe it's for the better, since what we expect in Mario is extremely well-tuned and designed levels more than just simply the quantity of levels.

Re: Review: Baseball (Wii U eShop / NES)

Tryken

I always preferred Bases Loaded to this title. Something about Bases Loaded felt more like a "baseball game" than Baseball. Don't get me wrong, I've played it, and it's functional no doubt, but Bases Loaded 1-3 kept me pretty entertained for my baseball itch. Now if only they'd release a Mario Sluggers for Wii U.

Re: Review: Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (Virtual Console / Nintendo 64)

Tryken

I'm going to throw down some civil disagreement on this review (bam!).

I just recently started playing the game after fixing my Nintendo 64, and I found it to be pretty enjoyable. It's a lot slower pace than previous (and later) Kirby entries, but it holds plenty of the charm of Kirby. It's slower paced, yes, and that took some adjustment. However, I'm halfway through the third world and enjoying myself much, much more than I did with Kirby's Yarn, an entry which retains none of Kirby's charm yet somehow scored higher than Kirby 64 on NintendoLife.

I'd probably give this Kirby closer to a 7/10 than a 5/10 at this stage of my time with it.

Re: Shadow of the Eternals is Officially "On Hold"

Tryken

The development of the game had a lot of missteps. Splitting into two separate crowd-funding sources at the same time made people feel they were double-dipping. It also split those who did fund, so both funding methods failed to reach their goal. Then, when they finally went after it a second time, everyone was feeling exhausted and sort of disheartened from the first. To make matters worse, the only publicity the team received was one of their developers being arrested. And while the actions of one person shouldn't affect the judgement of the entire team of developers, it does to many, regardless of our personal feelings on the matter.

So the fact that the game is getting temporarily set aside is no surprise. If it has any chance of being funded eventually, it'll need space so it can start fresh. Sadly, I don't think it'll matter. The moment it tries to go for it again, many news websites (not Nintendolife) will beat the dead horses of its past failures until it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. But hopefully everyone will be able to let the game's funding start fresh. I just doubt they will.

Re: Review: TNT Racers - Nitro Machines Edition (Wii U eShop)

Tryken

I'm to the point that when a game like this releases and it doesn't have online multiplayer, my desire to get it is almost instantly gone. I was a lot less forgiving when it was the Wii, but now that we're on the Wii U, I just don't have the sympathy for games lacking online multiplayer.

Re: Your View: The Issues of Collecting and Owning Download-Only Games

Tryken

For those of you who are long time MMO players, you might feel similarly as cynical as myself. I remember when the thought of an MMORPG closing its doors couldn't possibly happen. Ultima Online, Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, Asheron's Call--these games just kept on coming that people bought and never saw an end in sight.

Then came Asheron's Call 2 shutting its doors in 2005. That was a shocker. Before this, people always assumed that when you bought an MMO it'd stay up forever. Online gaming and MMOs were still in a growing period, then suddenly this sobering moment hit everyone. I remember being on forums where the question got brought up, "Is this how it's going to start going? We buy a game and the servers get shut down later and bam, our purchase is nullified." The answer to that was yes. It started happening. Star Wars Galaxies shut its doors, and even City of Heroes--despite massive outcries from fans--powered down their servers. All of a sudden, it became painfully clear that we were buying a product with an unknown lifespan.

What does this have to do with digital sales? I think it's foreshadows what we're going to see in the future. Eventually, those services will be shut down when they become particularly unprofitable and are low enough in consumer usage. When they are, that's it. For Nintendo products where it's tied to your console, you'll most likely have the game as long as you don't delete it from your harddrive. As for 360 and PS3 where it's tied to an account--well, I don't know.

But never forget that when you buy something which, at any point, requires an online server (whether it be to download it, play it, verify it, etc.), you're buying something with an unknown and limited lifespan, as that product is still at the will (and the cost) of the company, and will be terminated once it's too far in the red.

Re: Iwata: Nintendo Not Considering Lay-offs To Strengthen Finances

Tryken

This is the kind of stuff that has made me such a Nintendo fanboy. Nintendo has always impressed me with their financial resolve (such as having money put away in case they have a struggling year or... how many could they survive, like 10 years or more?). It's such good business practice.

Re: Nintendo To Focus On Struggling Markets In The Short-Term

Tryken

I'll give you some great ideas, Utilize some of your massive IP library that you're not touching. Don't play such a massively safe game. These choices they're making are too safe. Where is a knock-out title? Not a single first party IP announced contained that excitement. And most Nintendo fans were disheartened by a new Donkey Kong game over the other options. I think a new F-Zero or Star Fox would have provided that "hardcore" zing the console needed. I'm just not convinced that Nintendo is out to please the core audience. I think they're saying it with their words, but until New Super Mario Bros. is not a core game, and the 3D Mario doesn't seem to have the ambition that Sunshine, 64, Super Mario World, Galaxy, or the other major entries in the series contain.

But, then again, what Nintendo needs to do is increase its sales. It came from the casual crowd before, it'll come from the casual crowd again, most likely, unless they do something more to woo the betrayed Xbox One fans, which they've actually done a bit.

I still love my Wii U, look forward to 3D Mario World and hope it proves me wrong (I trust Nintendo still), Mario Kart 8, and, of course, Wonderful 101 and Windwaker remake. But I'd like a big hardcore surprise. Just a single game, Nintendo. Throw me that bone.

Edit: On second thought, I really am pleased with Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, and X coming out. I'm just being a grumpy old Nintendo fan and wanting to see those franchises that are collecting dust in Nintendo's vault. They're giving hardcore games, too, but I think everyone here wants a new F-Zero, Metroid, or Star Fox.

Re: Nintendo Download: 4th July (North America)

Tryken

Thanks for posting the discounts. I've wanted Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive for a while now, and I finally bought it last night (had just enough money already in my account). I absolutely love the game so far. The music is some of the best I've heard, and it really gives me this fun puzzle feel with a mix of Mega Man X music/stage look. I wouldn't have hopped on the shop if it weren't for your post, Nintendolife. You do small developers and consumers a good service by posting sales. Thanks!

Re: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Hopping To Wii U This Year

Tryken

This was the worst announcement of the Nintendo Direct. I was expecting something exciting. Nintendo has to realize that it's smaller IPs like Metroid, F-Zero, and games like that will pull in hardcore gamers' attentions. Instead, they put out this safe title. I'm hoping that Retro has something else in store. It doesn't make any sense otherwise.

Re: Platinum's Inaba: Wonderful 101 Is So Much Fun You'll "Wear Out Your GamePad"

Tryken

Is it crazy that I'm more excited for Wonderful 101 than any other announced game for the Wii U? Pikmin 3 will probably be my first entry into the Pikmin series, so I'm not feeling it yet. And everything else of note hasn't been announced yet. Either way, Wonderful 101 is the game I'm most looking forward to on my Wii U as of right now.

Re: Talking Point: An Open Letter To Nintendo

Tryken

I agree with his frustrations concerning lack of content, I strongly disagree with his views on the games.

  • No good Zelda since Ocarina. - What?
  • Screw maternal Samus! We don't need to know her. - Why can't we know her? Is she not allowed to have doubts or fears or admiration for others like everyone else? I'm sorry she was a flat character for you to oogle explosions with. I liked Other M. I thought it was excellent.
  • You ask for Nintendo to take risks, then admire how perfect New Super Mario Bros. is and note dislike to Mario Galaxy. That's a contradiction. NSMB is the problem, not the solution.

Do I think Nintendo could be better? Yeah. I specifically blame Nintendo of America and Reggie. If it wasn't for a massive community outpour (Operation Rainfall), we'd have never seen Xenoblade. I blame Nintendo for not tapping Star Fox, F-Zero, Metroid, Earthbound, or many of their other hidden gems for more.

But, I bought the Wii U perfectly knowing this would happen on day one. Why? Because Nintendo is a slow-build company. They have to lone it a lot of the time. Their systems take longer to build up a good library. That's why when people often whine when a Nintendo console is out but remember it with fond memories later (Gamecube, for example). The Nintendo DS original didn't do well, either, initially. And we often think back to that as a great success. When you buy a Nintendo console, you know you're buying something with a slow build to excellence.

I also think the letter is looking back at the old days with rose-colored glasses. The amount of games, and I mean AAA titles, released today is far, far greater than what we got with Nintendo games in the 80s and early 90s. Nintendo never had to deal with the short attention span of gamers in the 80s. A real, great title took time to get back then, too. But now-a-days, the gaming industry is massive, and able to produce the next "MUST OWN TITLE OF THE SUMMER" every other week. Nintendo, as a company, cannot keep up with that. And while Sony and Microsoft have other avenues of money, Nintendo doesn't. They're a game company. And, I think, the Disney of game companies. They take a little longer for their great works, but when they do release, they're ones worth revisiting time and time again. They're that special feeling you get. And I'm willing to let my Wii U collect a little dust while I wait. I'll be patient, because I still trust Nintendo (just not Nintendo of America).

And I imagine Nintendo is as flustered as you are right now. Imagine the panic they're feeling with third parties dropping their system. How about we act like REAL fans and show them we have their back even when they're in a corner.

Re: Ubisoft: Nintendo Will Make "Necessary Changes" To Wii U

Tryken

I'm glad that Ubisoft isn't making Nintendo exclusives. I don't think a Nintendo launch could survive anymore "help" from Ubisoft's shovelware titles after the crap they released for 3DS. Ubisoft is absolutely one of the worst companies in gaming aside from a few of their AAA titles they sprinkle throughout the year to keep gamers distracted.

Re: Wii U Selling 1.2 Games Per Console In North America

Tryken

I bought a Deluxe version of Wii U and bought... nothing with it. A family member will be getting me Mario U for Christmas, but even though there were a ton of "games" with the Wii U launch, they were a bunch of Ubisoft games--you know, the same company that flooded the 3DS launch with mediocre titles. It left me skeptical. And Mario U wasn't enough to compel me for an immediate purchase.

Re: PETA Targets Pokémon Black & White 2 in Latest Campaign

Tryken

It's generally understood in the Pokemon games that Pokemon are intelligent creatures that choose to fight for you. It's not like animals that don't have a choice. Sure, people like Team Rocket are out to enslave Pokemon and make them fight against their free will, but--news flash--they're the bad guys.

Re: Review: World Heroes Perfect (Wii Virtual Console / Neo Geo)

Tryken

The issue with fighting game additions is that only the latest one is viable to play competitively. By that I mean: Street Fighter 2 Super Turbo (HDR was the exception, even though I think it's a better game), SFIII Third Strike, and SFIV AE 2012. While releasing the previous ones is a neat novelty, it's not particularly useful for trying to be competitive in, say, vanilla SFIV or Street Fighter III New Generation.

Re: Ubisoft Wants to Be Top Dog on Wii U

Tryken

Noooo! Ubisoft can keep as far away from Nintendo launches as possible. After their slew of crappy software on the 3DS launch, I partially blame them for causing the "3DS has no good software" problem because they wanted to get in like 6 launch titles.

Re: Kid Icarus Uprising Gets Perfect Review Score in Famitsu

Tryken

And, to top it off, don't forget that if you reserved it in NA (ex. Gamestop) you get the 3DS Classics Kid Icarus remake for FREE. That's two games. One a perfect in famitsu, the other an underrated classic, for the price of one 3DS title. That's hype within itself.

Re: Harvest Moon Creator Reflects on Hellish Development

Tryken

Harvest Moon is one of my favorite franchises. I remember my brother renting the original from Hollywood Video (he worked there). It was something we had never imagined could exist, and be so addictive. When I got my copy of Harvest Moon 64, I remember playing it day and night without pause. It was just amazing. I felt like part of a real town.

Keep them coming! Especially another handheld Rune Factory.

Re: Review: Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream (3DS eShop / NES)

Tryken

I feel jipped by not having this get the 3D treatment. Of all the NES games that were going to get it, this was my number 1 choice (Snake Rattle and Roll would have been cool, too). To get it as just another port is mildly insulting, especially to those that already bought it for Wii.

If you haven't played Punch-Out!!! though, you're missing out on one of the best games of the NES era and beyond.

Re: Rumour: Japanese Developers Moving from Vita to 3DS

Tryken

That's the weakness Sony almost always has — poor first party support when their third parties fail them. Nintendo was able to pull around after some third party companies (cough Ubisoft cough) threw shovelware all over the 3DS.

Sony has Gran Turismo, Little Big Planet... and.. am I missing anything? Twisted Metal is sony exclusive, isn't it? But, again. It doesn't give them self-reliability with their software. That and they need a price drop. If Nintendo couldn't pull 250 for a handheld, what makes you think you can?

Re: Review: Pullblox (3DSWare)

Tryken

Pushmo is awesome. For anyone who owns a 3DS and is on the fence, teeter no more! The game's tight controls and user generated QR codes makes the game infinitely playable. Whenever I'm feeling bored, I just go onto the NLife forums, snap a picture of someone's design, and play that puzzle. It's that easy and wonderful. And the fact it's 6.99 feels like a steal, considering it's better than half the retail releases on the 3DS right now.

Re: Pullblox

Tryken

While I'm 90% certain I'm going to buy this game, I wish NLife would hurry up and put out their review of it!

Re: Review: Metroid II: Return of Samus (3DS Virtual Console / Game Boy)

Tryken

I agree with you, TheDarkness. Metroid is almost always jipped by the game community and many journalists. I think the NES Metroid had one of the best NES soundtracks and was enjoyable. The difficulty IS a turn off in it, as it's brutal, but there were many NES games I've never beaten that were still a blast.

Then again, I also think Metroid Other M is an amazing title that explores a very human Samus. Most gamer guys were mad because they didn't want their crazy stoic BA woman to be human.
