The Wii U was launched with a huge selection of games to choose from covering a whole host of genres. There's the likes of Assassin's Creed III, Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition for experienced gamers while titles such as Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U offer something for more family play.
It would perhaps be expected that a fair few games would be sold, however figures coming out of North America show that only 1.2 games are being bought per console. This is a relatively low figure considering the Wii sold 2 games per console when it launched back in 2006, but there could be several factors to account for it.
Speaking to investors, analyst James Hardiman of Longbow Research said this could be because of the Wii U's higher price tag leaving consumers with less money to spend on additional games, but also pointed out the fact that Nintendo Land is bundled in with the Deluxe Set. Many may have seen Nintendo Land as a rich enough experience in itself and therefore decided to hold off on buying many more titles alongside it.
Did you pick up a Wii U? If so, how many games did you buy alongside it? Let us know in the comments section below.

That is no where near what Nintendo wanted! Ouch. If it doesn't pick up soon they will post yet another loss this coming period.
I'd like .2 copies of NSMBU, please.
Monster Hunter hasn't arrived yet. Just wait.
Well, I have 12 games on launch day, so I hope the figures will be different/higher for Europe? ( For those curious, here is the list: http://shiryugames.odrakir.com/WIIU.html )
I dunno about anyone else, but having just bought the Deluxe system and two games, I'm pretty well tapped out at the moment, especially if I want to afford buying Christmas gifts for my family.
Wii U Deluxe bundle w/ NintendoLand
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
New Super Mario Bros U
Little Inferno
(NintendoLand does for Wii U, what Wii Sports did for Wii. It gives you that "wow" factor.)
Premium Pack with NintendoLand pack-in game and one other game (NSMBU). Dont forget the Wii U games are 20% more expensive
I got Mario. The Wii U launched with many good games.. the problem i think is that most of them are ports of the 360/ps3 and not developed for the Wii U.
I kind of thought as much with Wii U for this generation to be honest. Seeing this from someone such as myself, once I finally can get one, I'm getting New Super Mario Bros. U alongside the 32 GB Deluxe Set. Besides, if ppl think long and hard about it, this probably is accurate seeing as how most gamers or non-gamers out there are looking for the 32 GB Deluxe Set more than they are the 8 GB Basic Set. Plus add in the other fact that games for Wii U have went up to $59.99 and this is probably the reason why for sales being like this the way they are.
Wii U Basic + 1 game + tax = $400
So really how much due people expect gamers to spend in this rough economy.
I have a Wii U Deluxe set w/ Nintendo Land. I also purchased New Super Mario Bros U. I also grabbed Nano Assault Neo and Mighty Switch Force from the eShop. Unfortunately, most of the launch games weren't exclusive to Wii U so sadly I already had played through most of them and ZombiU itself I thought was just okay (which most people either LOVE IT or HATE IT). I did love Scribblenauts from my GameFly rental and once Christmas shopping and other stuff eating at my money is over, I do plan on grabbing that title. Once more exclusive titles come out for Wii U or at least launch at the SAME TIME as the other games then we'll probably see more sales.
I haven't gotten a Wii U (YET.)
But when I do I'll get the Wii U Deluxe set + Scribblenaughts unlimited
Wow... This is gonna take me a while to save
up for...
I got the ZombiU pack, with Nintendo land, NSMBU, Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed and ME3:UE! Plus Little Inferno! Love them all!
I have the zombi U premium wii u with nintendo land, ac3,nsmbu and trine 2.
I only bought one extra game with my Wii U. I think I'm going to stick to pre-owned if they insist on the ridiculously high MSRPs, even though I'd much rather give my money to the developer. It's not that I can't afford it either, I just think it's not justified.
Does the 1.2 count the included Nintendo Land or is it only separate boxed sales? Do DL sales count?
The system is expensive and the games are expensive compared to other options out there, just how much are people supposed to spend?
Wii U deluxe plus SMB U accounts for 1.0 and what else is there that isn't on the PS3 or Xbox360 that people need to buy?
Any parent buying this for their kids as a Christmas gift are only buying Mario, other game sales will pick up after kids actually open the box.
Pikmin 3 and Rayman Legends - exclusives - will double that number.
Didn't Reggie say that they needed to sell one game per console to make a profit? If that's the case, then Nintendo are doing well!
When the Wii launched there might have been people buying games in preparation for finally finding a system somewhere after x-mas, but I'm pretty sure most people who really wanted a Wii U were able to find one this time, so there probably aren't as many people buying games without the system. Also, I seem to remember some stores forcing you to buy bundled games if you wanted a Wii, so that also might have driven up game sales for the Wii.
nsmbu, sonic and sega all star racing transformed and paper mario sticker star.
If someone bought a WiiU and only one game now, I guarantee they will be buying more in the future. Otherwise there would have been no motivation to buy the console to begin with. It may take me a whole year to fully save up for just the launch titles that I still want to get, but Nintendo will still get my money in the long run.
Got ZombiU bundled, bought Nintendoland from the eshop and just got Black Ops II
I've yet to get a Wii U, but I plan on getting NSMBU, Little Inferno, and maybe Scribblenauts Unlimited. But financially it all depends on what I get this Christmas (asked for Best Buy gift cards).
Oh, and when it comes out, certainly Pikmin 3. That for me is a must.
1.2 is retail.
NPD doesn't include digital.
...still, at the Wii launch, I immediately picked up Twilight Princess (actually I got Z:TP BEFORE I even got a Wii since it was so hard to get a Wii at the time!). For WiiU, I'm tempted by a couple of games, but waiting for sales.
Its because sum of your wii u games are selling at £59 pound what do you expected nintendo?
Were not all made of money (Roll's eyes)
.2? Dafoo did they get the .2 from?
Customer: Yeah I'd like to buy AC3 and .2 of Mario please.
Employee: Sure thing.
I plan on buying more when more games come to eShop, I think the only other game I want ATM is Ninja Gaiden
Tough times ahead for Nintendo. Wii U is an awesome system with a decent selection of quality software (as far as launch periods go, anyway), but half baked ports of third party software isn't going to entice the people who buy lots of games.
Are these numbers for stores? Because i find a lot of people are buying online copies for games. i have a lot of people on wara wara mentioning that they're waiting for their download of Tekken or NSMBU to finish, even Assassin Creed 3.
Keep in mind...not sure if the results counted this in, a lot of people got the deluxe package, which comes with Nintendoland, and a game. Wouldn't that count as two games?
Nothing to worry about in my view,
The deluxe set+1 NSMBU
Price has got to be a big factor. After I got my Wii U I just didn't have the cash to spare for any extra titles, there's the family xmas pressies to sort out after all. I'll be getting a couple more after my next payday later this week, I imagine I'm not the only one in that situation.
Not surprised to be honest.
I got NSMBU and Tekken Tag 2 on launch day, so that's two games for me.
The console is crazy expensive, that's the problem. That extra $100 over what you expect/want to pay really hurts. Let's face it, nobody wants to pay more that $250 for a console, so alot of people are probably waiting until then. Personally I like to see a console prove itself before jumping in most of the time anyway, and I've been a gamer since FOREVER and I've always been that way.
Also, Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2, and any flagship Zelda or Metroid or even Castlevania games are not available at launch which is a huge mistake if you want to sell boatloads of consoles fast.
You need games that actually sell consoles, not just a bunch of random whatever. I want to play NSMBwiiU but not enough to schill out $450 only to have 1.5 games to play on my shiny brand new console.
I bought a basic set and got Nintendo Land alongside it. I would have bought more software, but I want to do the download thing, so I needed a new hard disk which meant I was out of pocket 400 quid before I even bought a game!
I don't think I'll be getting another retail release until Feb. I downloaded Nano Assault Neo and plan to get Trine 2 for January. I actually don't mind the software expense as it avoids my stockpiling games and not playing them, but it does mean I'll be buying less software this time around.
Yeah, my point would be don't forget eShop too! The attach rate may actually be much higher when you factor that in. I bought Zombi U and ACIII at retail with my premium bundle, but then also downloaded NSMBU, Little Inferno and Nano Assault Neo. Have also since bought Sonic Racing. So, initial attachment rate from retail = 2, but real attach rate between 4 and 6!!
I picked up a deluxe bundle plus NSMBU, ZombiU, AC3, and Black Op 2. Toys R Us had a great buy 1 get 1 40% off deal for Wii U games on Black Friday.
I plan to get a couple games for Christmas. Sales should increase as Christmas draws nearer.
Well, it makes sense. You're looking at $50-$100 higher than what the Wii was when that launched, and games are now $60 a pop on average instead of $50. That, and the US economy is suffering pretty badly lately.
Spent £275 on Deluxe w/Nintendo Land. Just dropped another £100 on Tekken, Mario & Zombi U. That's my christmas present to myself and the most im willing to spend atm. Unfortunately I can't power my car with Wii U games, nor pay my rent in Eshop credits, so theres a limit to spending power
After christmas I'll buy Epic Mickey 2(Wii version) and All Stars Racing Transformed.Even if i buy them now I can't play them since my Wii U should come next week.
I got a twenty percent discount and buying the basic set with New Super Mario Bros. U has left me broke... It's not hard to see why people aren't buying many games. Not only is the economy bad, but most third party games are sequels to games that don't appear on the system and are cheaper elsewhere. I'm sure the increased price isn't helping matters either.
That $60-a-game price tag is rough, IMHO...
If this data doesn't include download numbers, than it's useless data.
I didn't buy any additional software because Nintendoland is tiding me over perfectly. (Also, I'm pretty poor after such a purchase, but even if I had the money I would probably still stick with Nintendoland.) I really want ZombiU, but I'm still not sure if I can justify the price tag for the amount of content. We'll see, though.
I got the deluxe bundle with 6 games. Toyrus played a big part with its buy 1, get the next 50% off any games sale and a $50 gift card I saved. The US economy ain't got nothing on good money management IMO
Those saying the system is expensive need to stop and think. It IS a next gen system with a fairly advanced controller so for 300$ thats not expensive when looking at the whole scheme of things. Say they went and added a bunch of needless hardware features. Say they added a bluray player. The 32 gig wouldve been 450$ or more. Say they added a standard harddrive like the ps360. Youre looking at an even worse price. Considering the industry now does 350 sound so expensive anymore? Be realistic. Considering what it is 350 is a great deal and waiting to release bigger titles gives people more time to plan accordingly. Nintendo isn't stupid. Remember the wii was a business decision. Don't gauge their future on the first quarter of sales. Thats ridiculous.
It's called Economy.
@krunchykhaos it's expensive whatever way you look at it. I don't think anyone's arguing here that it's too expensive for what it is, but it's going to take a considerable chunk out of most people's xmas budget.
Also your argument that it could've been worse doesn't hold up as well when us folks in europe paid around £300 for the deluxe, which is more like $480.
1. Multiplatform games. Most people have already purchased these games on other consoles for far less money, at this point.
2. I purchased ZombieU and Mario so I accounted for 2 sales. Honestly, there is nothing else I'm intersted in and nothing on the horizon.
Well I'm pretty sure the Wii rate factors in that Wii Sports comes with the console which contributes to a higher attach rate. Only the Deluxe bundle comes with Nintendo Land so there's that factor as well.
Economy is still recovering at this point as well so there's also that factor and the increased price of games.
I got premium pack with Nintendoland - which is brilliant with friends
I got fifa13 with it as well but sold it (because its not my type of game) & got ZombieU.
ZombieU is genuinly scary.
Since I have Nintendo Network Premium, I got myself Trine2 and am loving little quick sessions on this beautifull game.
I bought the Deluxe Edition on launch day in NA, which of course included Nintendo Land. I also bought NSMBU, ZombiU and Scribblenauts: Unlimited. I figured I'd eventually pick all of them up anyway so I just did it all on launch day. Also, I bought Little Inferno on the eShop which is definitely worth it! I enjoy all the games entirely.
The analysts would have to be correct. After having bought the Wii U Deluxe, I felt like Nintendo Land (and my huge backlog of Wii games) was enough to hold me over until Christmas for New Super Mario Bros U, Scribblenauts, Batman, Assassin's Creed 3, and ZombiU.
Well not everybody can be like me and have plenty of cash to feed my daughter and gaming habit (32g WiiU, 2TB HDD, 6 games) at the same time as pay the bills while keeping a roof over our heads... I Still have $1600 in the WiiU/3DS gaming pool bring on the VC please.
Well not in the US here but I got 4 extra Wii U games and Monster Hunter Tri cause I couldnt wait till March
Sonic
Blops2
Scribblenauts
ZombiU
Nintendoland (with Premium so didnt count that in my 4)
@MadAussieBloke
You could be using allot of that money on nice vacations instead of video games! Just sharing what I would be doing if I made that much money!
EDIT: Unless you do go on vacations already
Wii u games are just to expensive!
My question would be if these stats look at the bundled in games, if so and I would be inclined to think it does since sales figured for games would count number of wii sports sold or something like that, if all the sales were the deluxe bundle it would be nintendo land and 1 out of 5 people bought another game on average, but a lot of basics were probably sold too, so each of them probably had a game bought as well. But does this include downloadable games, at least the retail games. anyway i bought the deluxe and batman.
@Tornado Indeed, it is.
@WhiteKnight Exactly I tend to buy ALL my games from eShop so that means I bought Zero games for my wiiu
Buying mines next summer [summer job] Im gettin deluxe and plan on buying NSMBU, ZombiU, and Avengers: Battle For Earth
I think we should wait until shortly after Christmas to make any judgements. I suspect many households bought the wiiU deluxe. Parents are banking on the fact that it comes with a game already. Once the system is opened, and everyone's aunt and grampa had dolled out Christmas money, recipients of said money will buy more games.
I got a Deluxe and Mario Bros. U, but I also picked up a $35 eShop card to buy Trine 2 and Mighty Switch Force HDE with.
Not surprising for a few reasons:
1) Wii was cheaper than its rivals, where the WiiU is more expensive.
2) Who didn't pick up WiiPlay just for an extra remote. If you wanted a deeper, full game, neither WiiSports or WiiPlay had you covered, so that's one extra title you picked up.
3) I think the Wii launch was heavier on Nintendo exclusive (though there were GCN/PS2 ports). Except for ZombiU, Nintendoland, and NSMBU the big titles are all multiplat and have been out a while.
I went to every walmart and gamestop in my area and none of them had thegood games in stock!!!!! I cant even get NSMBU a mario title isnt even being carried.
I grabbed 3 retail games at launch. Most people I know grabbed at least 2. Not sure why the American numbers are so low. Poor economy?
I got Wii U Deluxe, Mario U, Assassins creed 3 , Darksiders , Mass Effect 3 , Zombie U, and I've downloaded Mighty switch force , Trina 2 and Nano assault , I'M BROKE ! LOL..
I think these reports are way off, I mean just read these post seems to me everyone's gotten atleast two if not more titles I'd like to know where this report came from, I DONT BELIEVE THEIR 1.2 CRAP.
I've bought four and am planning to get two more before January
I only got my Deluxe and that was it. Nintendo Land will keep me plenty busy until I hopefully get NSMBU for Christmas. Sorry Nintendo.
I got my Deluxe edition of Wii U along with Mario U, Zombie U and Batman ACAE so that's 3 games with one Wii U console. I'll get more in january as well.
I bought a Deluxe version of Wii U and bought... nothing with it. A family member will be getting me Mario U for Christmas, but even though there were a ton of "games" with the Wii U launch, they were a bunch of Ubisoft games--you know, the same company that flooded the 3DS launch with mediocre titles. It left me skeptical. And Mario U wasn't enough to compel me for an immediate purchase.
I have the bundled Nintendo Land and ZombieU. Will later get Batman, maybe scriblenauts or assasions creed. Definatly Pikman.
Not Surprised. Shouldn't. Have. Made. It. So. Expensive.
and we all complained when PS3 launched at about 500$ WITH a HDD, and some pretty similar features to this including a disc player. I didn't get one of those either, a bit dissapointed with the "basic" set being so badly gimped, so I'im skipping it until later notice. If I did I wouldn't buy another game either. I like downloading but theres no space for that so add another 50-100$ to that, plus exorbitant DL prices. It's 3DS all over again, so I'll wait for the price drop, then reconsider.
I got the deluxe with only NSMBU, but I will be able to afford 5 new games soon.
Wouldn't you think it'd be ridiculous to buy more than 3 games for your Wii U? I mean do people really get through games at such a fast rate? I bought 3 games including Nintendo Land with my Premium Bundle, ZombiU and also New Super Mario Bros. U (gettn for xmas), but It's gonna take me a while to get through them all. I think Nintendo is definitely making a profit, there's no doubt about that, but I still think the selection of games could've been better. Pikmin 3 should've been out and maybe Game & Wario too, I mean Nintendo had a Warioware game at launch of the wii, so I can't see why they couldn't have made launch.
I bought NSMBU, ZombiU, Sonic All-stars, and Ninja Gaiden 3 Razors Edge with my Deluxe Wii U.
its a great launch for me. don't know about anyone else.
Gamers talk constantly about how "disappointed" they are in everything, from consoles, to games, to everything under the sun.
I'd like to be on the record to state that gamers themselves are the disappointment these days. They fail to adapt, be intuitive and buck the trends of lowest common denominator thinking.
Its not the games that have failed us, it's the gamer that has failed.
Personally, even though yes, it's a deal, I still don't have the money to be dropping $400-$500 all at once on gaming. Or, I suppose I do but I'm very uncomfortable with the idea.
I bought the deluxe bundle and that's it. No retail games. Have downloaded Little Inferno and Nano Assault off the eShop, though, which of course don't count here. I'm hoping to get at least two and maybe up to four games for Christmas, though. And after Christmas is when I'll have more money to throw around again.
Not surprising. Most of the Wii U games that would interest the 'core', and even some that would interest the 'casual' crowd, are games that can be found on 360, PS3 and in a few cases even the Wii. I imagine this number will improve over the next few months though.
I got Wii Deluxe Bundle w/ Nintendo Land
+New Super Mario Brothers U
+Sega All-Stars Racing
I also plan on getting Pikmin 3 and Lego City Undercover. Also bear in mind that a lot of these consoles are Christmas gifts, so expect a lot of additional game purchases between December 25th and Jan 1st, 2013. I've not opened the box yet because it's a Christmas present from my mom. Another thing to consider as well, a lot of the Wiis sold at the original launch were bundled as in store promotions, with tons of crappy games that nobody wanted. Some of the bundles had up to seven games packed with them in order to inflate sales, mostly cash-in shovelware. Stuff like Happy Feet Wii, Madden 2007, etc...
Also don't forget that just about every nursing home in 2007 bought a Wii so they could create their own "senior bowling leagues"...
@Ren If its like the 3DS all over, then that means free DreamCast and GCN games so thank you
im saving up on the side for a Wii U. i was originally going to wait till more Nintendo games came out, but all the reviews & videos & hype about Nintendo Land and NSMBU is really making me impatient for one.
So my goal is to save up enough for a Deluxe Edition and NSMBU.
Once I have enough for those two items, I'm making the purchase.
Which will mean it will be a minute until I pick up a second game, for financial reasons.
I bet thats the case with most costumers at the moment. Especially if you want to buy accessories such as more Wii motes and 'chucks, Wii U pro controllers, external memory, etc. You're talking some serious bread at that point.
I'm all set with wii motes & i don't feel compelled to buy the pro controller, so I'll be set with the system and the game, but these numbers really aren't surprising.
Obviously when the system is a little older, the game sales will rise because more people will have the hardware, and will be spending money on the software instead. I'm guessing by the end of the "launch window" game sales pick up.
Nintendo Land is quite meaty for a pack-in, plus a number of strong downloads that seem to pull a fair share of gamers. Trine2 community on Miiverse is quite active.
Also almost all retail games are available as downloads, which as some stated before don't go into this stat. They should have quite an impact, shouldn't they?
I wouldn't be surprised if the effective attachment rate is actually even higher than for Wii.
Hmm. I'm a little unsure of this, if it includes the nintendo-land pack in for the deluxe set or not. If it does, then about 1 in 5 people are buying a second game to go with their wii u. I don't think I'm alone in thinking that a game should suffice for a few weeks if not months, especially at this price. People are being more frugal with their money.. or at least their not spending it on this. I can't really believe the former statement. But a Wii U can be expensive, as ideally it should have great multiplayer games focused on your living room, and that takes controllers (which of course adds a significant cost)!
Also, does it include downloaded games?
Poor economy, higher price on the system, higher price on the games, and a bundled game that is more robust than Wii Sports.. I can see why most people are only buying 1 or 2 games. I bought 4 with my system, but really SMBU and Zombie U were the only 2 must haves for me.
Not really surprised with the game sales here as I often look at MiiVerse and see a majority of people playing Nintendo Land or NSMBU.....
The sales will pick up. Remember, the Wii was $50-$100 cheaper than the Wii U and the games were also $20 cheaper. Also, it's the Christmas season. The sales will pick up again afterward when we all have spare cash that doesn't go to our families.
Well, the games are quite expensive. I have Nintendo Land (bundled) and ZombiU. The reason I haven't been buying more games are really that I have 4 Wii games that I should play first, or at least finish two of them..
Sigh. Bad excuses.
-runs off to buy another game-
@Konata Cosplay cafe not paying you good enough do they?
I got 2 games with my premium package,so are you happy with me Nintendo?
If you are give me a free game.
@HarmoKnight: If that's the case, I'd better get to buying one before the price drops! XD
The way I see it now, I do want to get both NSMBU and ZombiU. So I'd need about $500 for all of that. I am all set for Wii controllers, but getting the console and 2 games will take time. And since no one is willing to hire me, that's going to take quite a while.
