Re: Billy Mitchell's Donkey Kong And Pac-Man Scores Are Reinstated By Guinness World Records

Toad64

@DonSerrot Yeah, this doesn't really clear that up. The way it loaded levels was not the way machines loaded them. I'd really like to hear the explanation behind these decisions.

Not that it, like, really matters. That being said, I'm glad he got his Pac-Man record reinstated, thought it was a little harsh that ALL of his records were removed.

I do look forward to people talking a bit more in-depth about this, instead of "in light of new investigations and testimony".

Re: Guide: The Best Video Game Books Money Can Buy

Nintendo Magic is a fun read that looks mostly at the Wii era of Nintendo, but also touches a bit on older projects like Game and Watch, and how those shaped the Wii's creation. It was published in Japan originally but it's available in English and certainly a recommended read.

European publisher Pix n' Love Publishing had a great series of books including a fun history of Mario book, and a couple History of Nintendo books with tons of pictures that looked at their earlier products from the past 100 and some years. Sadly it looks like all of their books are out of print right now? Their website mentions a History of Metroid is upcoming though.

Re: Reminder: Arcade Archives Mario Bros. is Out Today

Toad64

@Alikan The original Donkey Kong arcade, however, had some programming that was partially done by another company, Ikegami Tsushinki Co. There's a question of whether or not they may have some say in what can be done with that version of the game. In fact, in 1983 the company sued Nintendo for 580 million yen when Nintendo decided to try to manufacture the boards themselves. The lawsuit involved both Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Junior. Nintendo settled out of court.

Re: Video: We Need To Talk About Ghostbusters 2 On The NES

Toad64

Saw the new movie over the weekend and thought it was great, I'll probably try to see it again before it's gone.

I revisited Ghostbusters 2 on NES just two weeks ago, and liked it a bit more than I was expecting to. I don't think I'd played it for about 10 years before that. And I finally beat the darn thing! That last level is hard (and the Statue of Liberty level goes on forever). All in all though, it was fun and had nice variety in the levels.

Thanks for the info. I have a Japanese import of this game and never really knew anything about it, except that it was hard!

Oh, wow, I was thinking the same thing! I used to call the pirana plants Audrey II's when I was a kid! Looking forward to trying it!

Re: Shovel Knight Closing In On Kickstarter Goal

Like Spacekappa, I got a chance to play this at PAX East and it was my favorite game of the show! I'm totally going to support them with $15 so I can get my Wii U version. The game looked great, played great, and sounded great!

Re: Nintendo Reveals Playable PAX East Line-Up

Toad64

Well, they're definitely getting better with their PAX showings. This will be my third PAX East, and I remember the first year i was so psyched to check out the Nintendo booth, thinking they'd have all these games on display that weren't due out for a while like Metroid Other M and Skyward Sword. Their booth was the size of a closet, and they had two games featured: Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver and Warioware DIY.

I will be checking out Spirit Camera. And challenging people to Kid Icarus battles. : )

Re: Review: Alleyway (Game Boy)

Toad64

I dunno, I really enjoy Alleyway. And at only $2.99, you can't really feel bad about losing the money. Then again, I was around when the game first came out, and I used to like playing brick-breaking games on the Atari (Circus Atari is still awesome fun), so maybe I'm in the minority.

Sure, it's a simple game with a simple concept, but that's why I kind of like having it on my 3DS's menu; sometimes I just want to play something for a few minutes, and with the new save state feature of Virtual Console, I can even pick up where I left off and save my high score, unlike the GB original.

Re: Feature: The Making of the Nintendo Virtual Boy

Toad64

Still have my Virtual Boy, which was bought for the full price of $180, sitting on my shelf. (I didn't pay for it though, my mom did) I believe I have 5 games for it. One of them is Wario Land VB, and it's awesome.
And yes, BlueFlameBat, Galactic Pinball is pretty great!
