The massively popular indie title Minecraft has built itself quite a fanbase since its emergence in 2011. It all started on mobile devices and PC, but moved over to the console market when it appeared on the Xbox Live Arcade.
Due to Microsoft's exclusivity deal with Mojang, the game's developer, it hasn't been made available on other systems. However, as Wii U owners know all too well, some exclusivity agreements come to an end.
We recently reported that Mojang’s Jens Bergensten said that once the deal expires, the developer would consider bringing Minecraft to PlayStation 3 but a Wii U version is "very unlikely".
Disappointment all round then, but it appears all hope is not lost as a Wii U version has been upgraded from "very unlikely" to "no more likely than any other platforms", as Jens Bergensten has since told Gamnesia the following:
The reason I said that is that the Wii U hasn’t even been mentioned when we’re talking about Minecraft platforms. However, I’m only responsible for the PC and Pocket editions, so the question wasn’t mine to answer. The Wii U is no more likely than any other platforms, but no less either.
So based on this new quote, Minecraft is just as likely to appear on Wii U as it is to show up on the PlayStation 3. Reading heavily between the lines you could say that if Mojang is considering a PlayStation 3 version then it may be contemplating a Wii U adaptation as well.
With the Wii U GamePad you would think the system would be perfect for Minecraft; it's now certainly more likely than it was a few days ago.
What are your thoughts on these developments? Would you be in favour of a Wii U iteration of Minecraft? As ever, let us know in the comments below.

I think it would be cool, but Minecraft is best on the PC. It's a very modding-friendly game, and that kind of thing doesn't transfer to locked-down consoles very well. The core idea is still fun, but from what I've played of it on both PC and Xbox the console version just loses something.
It'd make sense.
With the GamePad it'd be the best fit out of all consoles, so if they're gonna port it to another console it should be the way to go.
However, I'd be unlikely to purchase it, as I can just play it on my laptop.
I own Minecraft on PC, Xbox, Android and iOS. I only play the PC version. Chances are, as cool as it would be to see it cross platform, I'd pass on the purchase unless it came with some sort of bonus.
Yeah, I wouldn't be interested outside of PC, ever. It'd be cool and good for Nintendo from a business standpoint but I can't care. :/
As of right now I would only buy it if it was on the 3ds or ps3.
It started on the PC where it made the most sense and then was ported to other platforms when people complained about having to buy a superior gaming platform to play it, and thus inferior versions were born.
Seriously guys, just buy it on PC and go play it.
This actually sounds like it could work. I myself am not an especially big fan of Minecraft, but if it does come to the Wii U, I maaaaaay just consider trying it out. The reason for this is because the Wii U gamepad seems like it could work very well with many of the game's mechanics (better than the Xbox 360 controller at least). With the Wii U gamepad, you can do things like access your inventory or use it to craft new objects or trade with villagers. I'm sure we can all agree that it may not be better or even as good as the original PC version, but seeing it on the Wii U could be pretty interesting.
Wow, some of you people lack vision... hopefully the developer would see things differently and make the Gamepad an integral part of the experience.
Basically, agree with @McDuckletts-Co
I'll definitely get this if it arrives on Wii U!
I'd get it if it was EXACTLY like the PC version. I wouldn't want it be like the 360 version, which is downgraded.
A history of Wii U games: Yes, no, maybe, yey, maybe, no, yes, no, maybe, no, yes, maybe...
I get the point from mojang. They are busy making the PC version. The Xbox version was already done by a different studio (which name i forgot).
Thus something like this (uncertanty of releasing on WiiU) must end. Just make the damn games or let it be. Its not the system its made for that a hit or a miss, its how you make the game, and how you use the platforms unique capabilitys. And since the Xbox and PS3 dont really have any unique aspects to them that distinguishes them from one another, that is one point towards the Wii U version beeing supperior. And if you dont want to mess with touch controlls...see the sides of that huge gamepad ? It has buttons and sticks...they already worked on the 360. Just stream the game 1:1 to the gamepad like many other games did and i would be more than pleased with a semi portable minecraft.
If I had sone friends to play on the Wii U version I'd definitely buy. A few friends with no original copy already betrayed me out of their server because of the Hamachi 5 person limit on the pc version. I was the only one with the paid version. Bunch of scumbags.
Just port over the xbox version, add a tap-to-equip interface and a map on the GamePad. Then sit back and print money. I would love to play it on Wii U.
@Lin1876 my favorite part of the xbox version is that me and my friends can all get in one room and curse at each other when someone pushes someone into lava, losing all of our diamonds. You don't get the same feeling on a skype call
I honestly can't see the game making much of a difference on the Wii U, apart from benefiting as a business stand-point for Nintendo. If you ask me, Minecraft is a game that can only be appreciated fully on PC - it's a universal platform and serves the game's ideals better there. It was, of course, originally born on PC anyhow.
This isn't to say I oppose the idea but I say it honestly can't do the same kind of good on Wii U, or any other platforms hereon for that matter.
"With the Wii U GamePad you would think the system would be perfect for Minecraft; it's now certainly more likely than it was a few days ago."
Actually, no. It is not any more likely than a few days ago if the prospect of a Wii U version wasn't something Jens was involved with in the first place. The likelihood is exactly the same.
They should put it on 3DS instead of the Wii U.
If they would bring it to the 3DS it will be way better than the Pocket Editions for IOS and Android.
One of the best parts of Minecraft on PC was how flexible it was. I have an adventure map I'm making were you have to get quests from NPCs (via a mod) and instead of surviving, your goal is to find 4 ancient magic swords and bring them together to defeat and ancient dragon.
If Minecraft came to Wii U, I'm worried that the GamePad won't be given proper love.
Either way, a port of Minecraft with offscreen play is welcome in my book.
A touch screen inventory/ Crafting? Oh god yes please.
Xbox works well enough but off-screen play, having more RAM, better tech specs, etc. could make Wii U run a more promising version of Minecraft.
I will buy it. Take my money now!!
My fingers are crossed, that's for sure. The game would be an instant purchase from me.
I would lose my mind if minecraft came to the Wii U
in a good way
This is what I wanted from the start, and if it would use api's, this would look very promising.
reasons why I'd buy a Wii U version:
1)dinosaur computer, can hardly run it.
2)I don't care about modding, all I was ever interested in was the core game.
Seriously guys, just hook up your PC to the TV and play minecraft. But the 3DS version, that is something to talk about.
I could not be less excited about it
It wouldn't be that easy to port the 360 version to the Wii U because it's written in c# and xna which are both made by microsoft.
i would buy it on wii u instead of ps3, if it does come out on wii u that is...
I play Minecraft avidly on the PC, so I think it would be absolutely awesome if it was to come to Wii U! Come on Mojang...
I've never played Minecraft, though I may consider buying it if it comes to Wii U, just because it would work great for the touch screen. I'd be more likely to buy it if it came to 3DS, for the same reason I usually use GamePad only in games: either I'm half blind or my TV is way too small.
EDIT: @SunnyShores You mean your "Mindcraft?" Sorry, I couldn't resist.
would be PERFECT on wii u!
please, please do this
I have it on my computer, but my computer can't run it well at all, so if it came to my Wii U then I'd be certain to pick it up. And as for if it's better or worse then pc version... So long as it has Creative and redstone, I don't really care.
They obviously haven't heard about all the indie support the Wii U has given.
Well I'd like to see it on Wii U, according to the minecraft demo both my laptop and computer aren't good enough to run it, I think it's the graphics card.
It's weird, like two days before the original statement was said by Jens, I was just telling a friend that I'd love a Minecraft port on WiiU and 3DS. I still have hope that we'll see it someday.
@twistedbee No maps. Maps are an item in Mincraft, and if you had it from the start it would make it much easier. When you first make a world you have to get a temporary home going and try not to get lost while looking for resources. If you have the item then showing it on the gamepad is fine, but not without the item.
I'm not sure how the gamepad would benefit minecraft. An inventory would be nice, but not "perfect". Plus, on the PC you can have infinitely large worlds, while on console you' be limited. Not do to lack of memory, the Xbox 360 could store a world easy, but they can't tell Nintendo "We aren't sure how much memory they'd need to store a world, it depends on what they do." They can do that on PC do to the openness of the platform, but since you can't back up a save, or compress one on the Wii U it would be limited.
@undead_terror Woah! 3D minecraft! that'd be really cool.
I got it on PC, don't need it.
....yet I would buy it again if it came out on Wii U/3DS
The WiiU and 3DS are perfect for the inventory system but they are a little late to the party. The 3DS version would be pretty amazing though.
Too late I think but overall I like the idea of minecraft on the Wii U. The touch pad is perfect for it.
Played the demo on 360, and thought it was alright. Maybe I should give it another shot. A lot of people on my friend list has this game.
It would be awesome if they release Minecraft on the 3DS!
I wouldn't buy it, I much prefer it on PC, but I'm sure there are others who could make it a worthy project for Mojang.
I have the PC version, but I think it would be AWESOME to have Wii U & 3DS versions of Minecraft!
8
I don't own a Wii U, but I do own a 3DA.
*3DS. I'd buy it with no hesitation, and I'm thinking it'd probably turn out better than the mobile counterparts. :B
Miiverse + Minecraft Wii U = EPIC
Mojang should make MC for Wii U!
I never really got into MineCraft because every PC I've ever owned sucks for gaming, but if a Wii U edition were ever released I could see it going well with the GamePad functionality. I'll take it!
The Wii U can do a lot thanks to the gamepad. I've been playing the xbox version since release and it has gotten real good. But it still fills bland, the Wii U doesn't just has a innovative controller, it has more power. so it can do much more, like adding serves for people to play like the PC version. And for the 3DS i can see a much better version than the Pocket Edition on Android and IOS
I think Minecraft is overrated and overpriced.
That being said, if it came to Wii U, I might consider it, but I have it on my iPod Touch and it's really nothing I'd spend more than $10 on(my brother and I's iPod accounts are linked, so whatever he buys I get, so I got Pocket Edition for free).
well, i have it on 360, and i hardly ever play it. my great-great-great grandchildren are the kids that play it. might get this version if it comes. gamepad would certainly speed things up in terms of efficiency.
"However, as Wii U owners know all too well, some exclusivity agreements come to an end."
this was my favorite part of the article. FAVORITE.
@Astro Not likely your graphics card Minecraft "can" be CPU intensive and also requires a fare amount of RAM to run, your graphics card shouldn't be an issue with Minecraft, So i would suggest either your CPU speed is not fast enough or you have a really small amount of RAM...
Anyway as far as Minecraft is concerned not that bothered if it turns up on Wii U or not simply because ever since Mojang implemented the single player is really multiplayer aspect the game has just gotten worse performance "can" be sluggish and world generation is painfully slow... Atleast on my computer which used to run Minecraft without a sweat... I haven't played Minecraft since that version came out and still have no desire too
It would be nice to have this on WiiU.
I would LOVE minecraft if it came to the Wii U. Using the game pad with it would be so much fun.. I can already imagine being on a server with less griefers due it being on the Wii U and it won't be as popular as the PC version which I love, but hate being on a server due to the griefers. But either way, MAKE MINECRAFT FOR WII U.
This is fantastic news!!
@Jukilum You are wrong it would be awesome.
3ds would be the neatest
If Minecraft came out on wii u I would be the first to get it, because it is boss. My username says so.
It would be fun running minecraft at a high fps and long render distance but minecraft was made for pc and pc only. ITS A PC GAME!
But if mojang brought out minecraft on xbox360, then they should bring it to wii u owners who can't run minecraft at all on their pc. Anyway if mojang brought minecraft to every console, then they would have to consider bringing tekkit/technic launcher to the consoles too.
