Re: Soapbox: Indies Lead The Way But Nintendo Shows Progress Representing People Of Colour

TheMadManSFX

@burninmylight So I'll respond one part at a time, but in general I think you made some reasonable points. First, let's start with the Native Americans/Redskins Team. I think you make a good point on the wide array of people but that's something I would cite in my own defense for the fact I've seen Native Americans who don't mind the name and some who do. Who is more right and why does one person who isn't elected get to speak for so many different people? If it was in a different time, I'd be willing to even agree with the argument more but in a current social climate that forces diversity and wants to cancel so rampantly and have people never be able to make a mistake or stand by something with even any remote flawed origins, it makes caving in now of all times a bit of a sham and only hurts in the long run. Same goes for the Cleveland Indians. Point being, context is important and while Stewart's team made a legitimately fair point on Redskins as a racial slur, perhaps getting rid of it all is a bit extreme and maybe meeting in the middle would be fair?

As far as your point on Gay representation goes, it's only realistic in a vacuum. Foucault's Sexual revolution made sure to leave it's mark in that sense and be more open about homosexuality among other topics, and that doesn't even go into the fact that in the USA, homosexual marriage is completely legal and no one can be discriminated under law for his/her sexual orientation. Even despite tht, that goes into my original point that quote unquote representation boils a person down to the basic and most obvious traits, in this case it's sexual in nature as opposed to skin color.

Re: Soapbox: Indies Lead The Way But Nintendo Shows Progress Representing People Of Colour

TheMadManSFX

@nessisonett That's completely irrelevant to the point, first of all. If you've ever read or watched Sowell, it's blatantly hard to deny his obsession to facts and reasoning, and he makes strong cases for his studies on economics and race relations. I'm not denying climate change, but if Sowell gave a critique on the matter, he likely had damn good reason to do so. He spends his whole life challenging the status quo, I'd wager if he did it this time again he had sources and reasoning to back himself up.

Re: Soapbox: Indies Lead The Way But Nintendo Shows Progress Representing People Of Colour

TheMadManSFX

@jowe_gw

> Why making one article pointing out people of colour existing in media and asking for that to continue makes people so "territorial" in the first place?

Because we all already do and trying to force it in such a manner only makes the problem people force to exist even worse.

> "And how articles like these go against "diversity of ideas"? Because they highlight people of colour existing, that goes against "diversity of ideas"?"

You're not saying anything that hasn't already been said and explored to death. The only idea here is one of racial division for the sake of some convoluted notion.

>" what the quote in the end has to do with anything here?"
Sowell has taken a lifelong belief that any notion of political correctness and diversity is a load of nonsense and argues it's not a call for more of anything but just propping up the people discussed here as just tokens to be displayed for the sake of it, something the author himself argues.

Re: Soapbox: Indies Lead The Way But Nintendo Shows Progress Representing People Of Colour

TheMadManSFX

@TryToBeHopeful Why not? If someone else can cite a similar example as their "lived experience" and claim it to be offensive and hurtful, why can I not appreciate a silly stereotype of people I come from? That's my "lived experience" and I'd be willing to wager there were plenty of Native Americans who found little to no harm in Mr. Game and Watch or even in the names of the RedSkins/Indians, yet all those things got changed and cited as "harmful and offensive?"

Re: Soapbox: Indies Lead The Way But Nintendo Shows Progress Representing People Of Colour

TheMadManSFX

This just feels like, with all due respect, a waste of time. The more you talk on this promotion of skin color and force this notion of diversity of the most surface and basic ideas, not on diversity of ideas, you end up dividing people and making them even more territorial by the nature of human psychology. It feels forced and like another cookie cutter article articulating nothing new, nothing of substance, nothing that hasn't been already repeated somewhere else. You cite examples like "Vodka Drukenski" being offensive, but as someone with Russian ancestry that couldn't more wrong. I assume the phrase "lived experience" comes into play here but to be seen if a double standard occurs.

I would be willing to argue most people, as seen in this comments section, don't play games with their first thought being "I wonder if there will be a barebones surface level presentation of the most basic trait I have." We're generally going in wanting an enjoyable game to, ironically, take a break from real world affairs pertaining to such matters. You might scream at me to say I am not one of these people you mention, but you have no evidence I am not, no evidence to cite that I don't have my own "lived experience," and no real argument of which you've drawn your conclusion. I'll end off on a quote from one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th and 21st Century, Thomas Sowell: "The next time someone drones on about diversity, ask them about diversity of thought and how many republicans are in their sociology department."

I hope my comment doesn't get censored.

Re: BioWare Had Plans For A First-Person Mass Effect Game On Nintendo DS

TheMadManSFX

@Ghost_of_Hasashi It might seem that way, but for code that hasn't been touched in over 10 years, assuming it can even be accessed, it was still not made far in at all and was made for a different market with a device with 2 different screens. This game is dead and buried. Dread only got revived because of a whole new team who did something with the concept; I have high doubt EA would go back to this thing ever again given their current history on the Switch.

Re: Talking Point: Is It Worth Buying A Nintendo Wii U In 2021?

TheMadManSFX

It's a tough sell. At it's core, most of it's best titles are now on the Switch; they run better, the have more content, and ultimately are the better experiences. Fundamentally, the titles that it has left are the ones that are just impossible to port. Xenoblade X is coming eventually, HD Zelda's are all but confirmed in an official capacity, Taiko has new entires on Switch.

Fundamentally, you're really left with a few actual exclusives or the few games whose Wii U versions are superior , and even those are hit and miss. Wonderful 101 and, like Damien said, ZombiU are better on Wii U, but far from unplayable on new systems. NintendoLand and Game&Wario are interesting, one requires multiple people to really enjoy, and the other pales ultimately compared to it's predecessors.

Really, that leaves a few weird titles that could come but won't due to multiple issues. Fatal Frame 5 and Rainbow Curse could, but that's up to Nintendo. In theory, if TMS sold so poorly and still got a port, wouldn't doubt both of those could come too. Pushmo World could come and should come, but that's up to Nintendo again. NES Remix and Dr. Luigi are cute budget titles, but probably not worth the effort.

Starfox Zero all but killed that franchise, doubt Nintendo wishes to touch that mess at all.

Sure, you could play Wii games on your Wii U along with a few more VC titles, but it's a tough sell compared to emulation which offers a blatantly better experience.

It's a tough sell, genuinely it is. I'd say hold off personally speaking. The last 3 big heavy hitters are coming over, the 3 hidden gems (FF5, Kirby RC, and Pushmo World) might but it's tough to justify the whole purchase for 3 games, the budget titles aren't worth the purchase, the 2 multiplayer titles aren't worth it on their own, and the emulation itself is a tough sell compared to a dedicated unit or a computer.

Shoutout to all the Devil's Third and Dr. Luigi fans ready to burn me at the stake.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The February 2021 Nintendo Direct, Then?

TheMadManSFX

I think the issue is it comes down to a few things:
-First, Nintendo didn't really show off a lot of in-house stuff that's new, original, or massively exciting. SS HD is cool, but it's a barebones port of a less than 10 year old Wii Game with the bare minimum done to make it playable. Splatoon 3 doesn't seem to have much purpose exist since 2 is on Switch already. They didn't show off anything yet to really justify a sequel especially since they made such a big deal about supporting 2. Mario Golf is cool, Miitopia is cute, Pyra in smash is neat, but all of these aren't really anything new or groundbreaking. No info on Bayo3, Metroid Prime 1-4, 2D Metroid, really anything Nintendo has a hand in barring Project Triangle Strategy (admittedly, that did look outstanding and original). Second, why are all these games so overpriced for what they are?
-SS HD is $60, comparing that to all the Wii U ports that at least were this same generation/usually had a substantial amount of new content is a joke and not something I want to support. Being a Nintendo fan is kind of expensive as is and having to pay full price for a game that's not even a decade old and has no new content is kind of absurd. That doesn't even begin to talk about the advantage of an emulator or simply buying it on Wii U. What about the fact Nintendo knows Joy-Con are having serious issues, but still advertised a new set of Joy-Con? Unbelievable and frankly kind of scummy from a company I like.
Why is Mario Golf, a semi-niche sports title, a full $60? Why were the most interesting announcements from 3rd parties? Why is Miitopia, a free 3DS StreetPass game, $50?! I don't want to seem ungrateful, I am happy Nintendo did a direct and I am excited for these games, but not at that price point during a time when it's really hard for people to justify spending $60 on one game. I know Steam Sales have gotten kind of worse over the years, but it's much easier to be playing games on PC when most people aren't leaving their houses over biting the bullet on Switch. Frankly while I enjoyed the direct, it left a bad taste in my mouth from the overpriced and unoriginal games the Big N showed, and makes me worried about the future and arrogance of reliability on overpriced ""Legacy"" content, without even touching anything from N64-GCN and GB-DS.

Re: Yooka-Laylee Developer Playtonic Games Teases New Reveal Coming "Soon"

TheMadManSFX

If you look at Playtonic and their history, they have their 3D Platformer homage (Yooka-Laylee), 2D Platformer Homage (Impossible Lair), all that's really left is a Kart-Racer (Diddy Kong Racing, but unlikely considering it'd likely be a serious financial loss), a Beat Em' Up (Battletoads, slightly more feasible but still a big risk depending if it's a B-Team or A-Team project), a Fighting Game (Killer Instinct, but a pretty hefty undertaking. Although this could work, very few fighting games coming soon), or what I think is most likely: A First person Shooter! It makes sense in all regards: A popular genre, something the Switch doesn't have a ton of, something people are craving especially in Rare's style of GoldenEye/Perfect Dark, and the start for a whole new IP should the team be getting tired of only Yooka-Laylee. I expect some new IP that's a bit more serious in tone, possibly even spy-themed.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Duel #77 - Super Mario 64 DS

TheMadManSFX

I feel as though this is a case similar to Resident Evil 4 GCN vs Resident Evil 4 Wii. I think the Wii boxart is much nicer and pretter, but the GCN one works better as boxart/conveying the actual gameplay. I grew up with the NA cover and think it looks a bit cleaner, but for as strange as the Japanese one is, I think it conveys the gameplay a bit more and conveys what 64 DS is: a bit clunky and messy, but still Mario 64 with a lot of new features (new characters and levels)

Re: Feature: What’s The Sexiest Nintendo Console Ever?

TheMadManSFX

I gotta say, I'd go with either the Switch, the original 3DS, or the Micro. SNES isn't bad at all and looks like a strong evolution of the NES design, but the Switch looks like a nice, cleanly built tablet; sleek and to the point and screams minimalism at it's finest. The GBA Micro and Original 3DS also have so much personality in such a simple form factor.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 8th)

TheMadManSFX

I'm gonna fire up Dragon's Dogma this weekend because my friend has been on my case to play it for a long time, and I'm gonna try and finish Tokyo Mirage Sessions #Fe Encore to start a NG+. I know a lot of Atlus fans don't love it or even particularly like it but I really enjoy it despite how flawed it is. Gonna try and finish Ori and the Blind Forest as well, thats been rather fun lately.

Re: Talking Point: Have You Missed E3 This Year?

TheMadManSFX

Look E3 needs some retooling and tweaking, that's been a given for years, but the issue has been the virus delaying things and companies not wanting to set firm release dates unless they're sure. Nintendo is the worst where we know SOMETHING must be going on but they're so scared to have the balls to say "Yea it exists we just don't know what could happen and we want be as sure as possible" and they know how much their fans are expecting and honestly it's possible if we don't see much they could start to actively be hurting the Switch's strong momentum.

Re: Poll: No, Really, What Was Nintendo's Worst Year?

TheMadManSFX

I think saying 2020 is a tough pill to swallow in my opinion. New Paper Mario, Xenoblade Remaster, ANIMAL CROSSING NEW HORIZONS, ton of great ports by 2K, and tons of great indie games. If you say 2020, you don't know your history about the Wii U with the latter half of 2015 and especially the entirety of 2016 having genuinely nothing because of the obvious switch to "NX" development, where if you weren't a fan of Atlus, you had nothing to play on a Wii U or 3DS outside of backlog. At least the first half of 2015 had Xenoblade X, Splatoon, Mario Maker 1, & Majora 3D. Afterwords, it was dud after dud after dud (Amiibo Festival, Ultra Smash, Mario Part 10, Devil's Third, Color Splash, etc.) until March 2017. What about 1995 when development switched to the Nintendo 64 and Nintendo had only 3 notable releases (Earthbound, Yoshi's Island, and Chrono Trigger and everything else was the Virtual Boy). 2020 hasn't been perfect, but to argue it's Nintendo worst year for major releases is a joke of a statement.

Re: Feature: 8 Games That Could Really Benefit From A Modern Remake On Switch

TheMadManSFX

I agree with this list for the most part, but Kid Icarus Uprising should get more of an enhanced port over a remake.
MGS (GBC) and RE: Gaiden would certainly be interesting to see done, especially if they do it similar to how Konami did Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth on WiiWare to maybe spruce it up and homage its more traditional predecessors. Capcom could remake it but it's a tough sell when it isn't a super-popular RE game and especially with Code Veronica X seeming like the more likely choice to do if RE4 is really getting remade, at least from an investor standpoint.
Zelda 2 is probably the game on this list I'd want to see get a pure and proper remake from the ground up the most. I liked Link's Awakening (Switch) but it meddled with a lot of what made the original great by leaving so little for the imagination and being so much higher budget and bigger, almost losing a lot of charm. Zelda 2 has a lot of potential for being a unique game in the 2D series and I'd love to see Nintendo take a crack at it again.
