"Super Mario Galaxy, in the opinion of this humble writer and we suspect a number of other gamers, is one of the best games ever produced..."
Personally, I think it's THE best game ever made. A crowning achievement in graphics on such restricted hardware, music, controls, level design, plot (simple but poignant, and great for a Mario game), and the amount of innovation.
**When asked if there was a particular type of game he preferred creating music for, he answered with the Zelda series, due to the "variety of the worlds and the landscapes that you encounter within the game".**
I don't get this answer. It's not like "variety of worlds" is exclusive to Mario. If anything, there's a greater variety in Mario games than Zelda. So what' gives?
The ONLY two viable options I see are: 1.) Nintendo making their own animated Mario movie(s). They could outsource the animation if they really needed to but those Sm4sh cutscenes are a great indication of their capabilities. Plus, they have some great storytellers, like Yoshiaki Koizumi who did the storybook and plot for Mario Galaxy.
2.) Have Disney do it. They want Mario for Wreck-it-Ralph 2. They want to handle the character with a ton of respect as opposed to this cashgrab that Sony seems to be content with pulling. Give it to Disney, they could pull it off better than anyone that isn't Nintendo.
I still don't understand, what exactly is a figure player? How is it different from a normal fighter? Like how is FP Mario different from regular Mario?
They're actually done much better than I was anticipating, so I'm actually a little excited about them. The amount of customization is staggering and the ability to choose a class is fantastic.
One of the greatest actors to ever live. The Super Mario Bros. movie is terrible but in a strangely good way. And Hoskins' Mario is actually really likable and heroic. Rest in peace, Bob. I'll always remember you.
Really? Mario 3D World not good enough for GOTY? That's a lousy excuse for a list, then. The game was fantastic and constantly throwing new ideas at the player. An extremely polished, creative, innovative title.
@MAB This isn't a Mario problem. Mario sells (almost always). This is a Wii U problem. The console is a tough sell when people don't seem to get the point of the controller and, for anther $100, you can get a PS4 with a ton of hyped upcoming games. Plus, the marketing has just been outstanding for PS4 (and XBOne for that matter).
Also, go play the last few worlds and tell me you didn't have a hard time with a straight face. Come on now. No one's just that good. And I've been playing Mario games for a long time. 3D World is a fantastic game. Wii U is an unconvincing system (although I love it).
This game is so damn overrated, it's unbelievable. It didn't revolutionize 3D gaming, for sure. That honor belongs to Mario 64. Great game, but way too hyped up.
In my opinion, Super Mario Galaxy is THE best game of all-time. Many people would agree and so does the top spot on GameRankings. The orchestrated music, the incredible graphics, and the innovative gameplay that revitalized the Mario series (and arguably gaming to a degree) tie this beautiful package together nicely.. Hell, the story was even somehow amazing. No Mario game (or video game for that matter) has made me shed a tear before this. I loved the storybook and how it wasn't necessary to the main story but was there for those who wanted a deeper understanding of the lore and the absolutely epic premise that went with the main story was inspiring. I hope Mario Galaxy can someday be agreed upon as the best game ever, because it truly deserves it and I will always defend that idea.
Music in a Mario game has always been very important to me. It peaked in Galaxy, when the music was (is) literally some of the best I've ever heard in any medium. Glad to see 3D World carry that tradition of fantastic music.
@SkywardCrowbar Thank you for differentiating between 3D Mario games (which are amazing and packed with creativity and top-notch design) and 2D Mario games (which have become really uninspired, creatively stagnant, and lackluster since NSMB for the DS).
@bezerker99 This game's style is more vibrant and raw than previous Mario games. The Galaxy games made use of a lot of rim lighting and were very bright. Sunshine was cel-shaded to an extent, I believe. Mario 64... Looked like every other 64 game, but a bit more colorful. I mean, what do you want? At least Mario's gameplay is constantly evolving (in the main series). Each Zelda is the same as the last. The ones that changed it up the most were Wind Waker and Skyward Sword.
@gatorboi352 Not sure if you know this, but things get shiny when they're wet. Type in we hat. If there's a light source on it , it'll look shiny. Same goes for skin.
@TromboneGamer It just seems to be those two screenshots in the Amusement Park level that they look plastic. Every other screenshot has them looking more organic.
I think Mr. Ancel would probably understand this best. Rayman isn't an extremely profitable franchise, but he still set out to make the best games he could with Origins and Legends to bring Rayman back. I love this guy.
@DarkKirby To add on to your statement, not only was the battle system boring, but the addition of the babies and general structure of the game was lackluster as well. Baby Mario & Luigi didn't add much to the gameplay. We were still playing as Mario & Luigi (which isn't a bad thing by itself) who were given hammers as an arbitrary way of making it seem like we needed them.
The linearity of Partners in Time also hampered its success quite a lot for me. A huge reason Superstar Saga was so appealing to me was that vast overworld that we could explore, solve puzzles in, find the secrets of, and generally good around in. It acted as another layer of immersion. Partners in Time felt so restrictive and also rather lonely with its corridors as opposed to Superstar Saga's character-and-secret-filled overworld. That's why I'm so glad it made its return in Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team.
"Mario games, if you push to get it done, you can finish it in a year."
Well, copy and paste Mario games like the New series or 3D World could take as little as a year to make, maybe. But you don't make Super Mario Galaxy or 64 in a year.
I'm so excited for this game but I hope it doesn't turn out to be one giant tutorial level like Bowser's Inside Story was (which was nonetheless a brilliant game).
Uhhh... I mean, sure, DK can be adaptable but so can Mario. Especially the 3D series. The 2D series has become rather bland and predictable.
The 3D series tends to experiment with different gameplay styles along with adding new locations/setpieces/enemies. I won't go into depth too much, but the 3D series can be divided into 3 eras.
-The 64/Sunshine era included more adventure elements with the explorative maps and Mario's controls/physics; the combat of 64 and FLUDD from Sunshine were complimentary of this style.
-The Galaxy era brought Mario closer to his 2D roots with an emphasis on action and some puzzles set in linear stages; the addition of gravity made interesting and unique platforming and puzzling.
-The 3D Action era basically takes Mario's 2D endeavors and gives them a 3D coat of paint; Mario doesn't have any special powers (other than that nifty roll feature) this time and plays more like he does in the 2D games with a maneuverable jump in midair and a toggle for walking and running; Mario relies on power-ups to add variety to the gameplay. This era proves that a straight-up platformer can work in 3D.
The 2D games ever since the first NSMB for DS have all remained largely the same. To me, they feel like rehashes of the original 2D series as opposed to doing anything particularly new in terms of gameplay.
The quantity doesn't matter to me. Give me all the Mario games you want Nintendo, I'll buy 'em all (the platformers that is). However, 3D World is almost exactly like 3D Land in terms of gameplay. There's little innovation happening there. I hope I see a more traditional (or more innovative?) 3D Mario soon after this one for Wii U.

I think that it has such a small file size because of its use of sprites instead of 3D models. Those other games mentioned were fully 3D-rendered graphics.
"You can talk about a fighting game or an action game or a racing game, but as soon as you define your game specifically in those terms, you start limiting your creative range because you're thinking of the limitations of that genre. Perhaps the best thing we can do now is start with a concept rather than a genre. If we can do that, perhaps we can grow the whole idea a little bit."
No thank you. Nintendo going third party in any form is bad. If their consoles lose exclusivity to their first party titles, then their consoles will lose a great amount of sales and they will eventually have to go completely third party and then we (the fans) will find ourselves in the same sh*tty situation as Sega fans where Nintendo may not bring all their games to all consoles and there will be exclusivity deals and whatnot; it'll just be a big mess.
Of course I disagree, this man is always pessimistic in terms of Nintendo's fortunes. He claims that the handheld market will "continue to decline" despite the fact that the 3DS is outpacing the DS. And he claims that developers aren't supporting the system in any meaningful way despite the fact that amazing studios like Shin'en, Level 5, WayForward, and Renegade Kid all have games planned or plan on developing for the system in the future. F***ing idiot. He's not doing his job when he's always forecasting gloom and doom for Nintendo and is always wrong about it.
As much as I'd like to see Star Fox or Metroid, I really want to see a new IP from this amazing development team. I want to see what they can do when they're not being restricted by the rules of an existing franchise.
