Actually I'm kind of excited for this. A return to the series' roots is rather welcomed after having played the slew of Metroidvania titles on the DS. And if the DS' library is any indication, we'll likely see at least another Castlevania on the 3DS that will likely be (since Lords of Shadow 2 will be Mercury Steams' last Castlevania) in the vain of the Metroidvanias that many fans seem to enjoy so much.
Mario games are still special. They still hold as much significance now as they did a few years ago. He wil always sell millions upon millions of copies. He is appealing to the hardcore, the casual, and everyone in between and has garnered a massive fan base. Mario may not be completely crucial to making a system successful at launch, but it's a damn good idea. GCN, Wii, and 3DS launched without Mario, and two of the three had rocky starts. The Wii was so successful not because of Zelda, but because of the overwhelming hype built up for motion controls amongst the casual and Nintendo's masterful marketing strategies. Let there be a Mario at launch, and then one more during the system's life; just like Wii, which had SMG a year after launch, a 2D Mario 3 years after launch, and then a second 3D Mario 4 years after launch. And the Wii's a huge hit, as Mario (of course, with the combined effort of his fellow Ninty IP's such as Zelda and Kirby) has been able to carry its sales along, especially with Mario fans.
@alienfish Twilight Princess, including both versions, has sold about 6 million since its release in 2006. Super Mario Galaxy has sold about 11 million copies since its launch in 2007. No. No Zelda should be required to launch a console. If it is there for Zelda fans, it will definitely bring in many purchases, but Mario will sell a system faster than any other franchise. That's a fact. Plus, you seemed to overlook the massive hype for Wii Sports and the motion controls (as such a thing had never been heard of in gaming until 2005 or so) leading up to Wii's launch. The system was going to become the major success it went on to become with or without Zelda.
@warioswoods Friend, a new WarioWare or Wario Land is ALWAYS a good thing. Haha.
No, he's THE star. Let's face it, Nintendo's systems wouldn't be nearly as successful without their mascot giving them a lift to critical success. Sure, maybe a Mario at launch isn't integral if the system itself isn't handled correctly (price, features, specs, etc.) but if the console is done right, then a Mario game is key. Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 can easily be credited with getting 3DS out of its slump, and New Super Mario Bros. 2 will no doubt boost sales even further. The biggest question is how Nintendo will deal with Wii U's launch. There needs to be a Super Mario with a good system price point. That New Super Mario Bros. Mii nonsense isn't going to have lasting appeal and will no doubt enrage and annoy longtime fans of the series. Keep Miis out of a Mario game, keep the multiplayer, and get rid of the 'New' branding: Give us Super Mario Bros. 4, as was previously rumored. As for a proper Wii U Mario 3D game, if the devs want to see astronomical sales like NSMBWii, it needs to have at least Mario & Luigi co-op. Co-operation and multiplayer modes are arguably the biggest grab-in for modern gamers as of now. Plus, what Mario fan/gamer/person-with-a-soul wouldn't want to see both Mario Brothers running around in 3D-space. That would be so gratifying, and would attract exponentially higher sales. Give players back the sprawling worlds of 64 and Sunshine, or at least put in as many open world levels as linear levels to balance out the game's variety, and give us co-op. That will be the game that will help Wii U win against the likes of Xbox Durango and PS4 and claim the crown of Next Generation Gaming.
Says the man who is the inspiration for the 'Molyneux Cycle'. You know, the one where he hypes his next game, releases it to negative reviews, says the game was bad and promises the next one is better, rinse and repeat. That one. Yeah, Pete, you can shut it now.
I agree with billy-beauts. I'm only interested in Rayman Legends and Pikmin 3. Nintendo needs to let the whole "Mii" and "Wii" thing die, and especially not let it be the whole damn catch of the next fricking Mario platformer. And this is coming from a longtime fan who is easily excited by the prospect of a new Mario platformer: I do not want New Super Mario Mii at all. I want Super Mario Bros 4
3.52 million is rather decent, and honestly Nintendo shouldn't expect anything more than decent sales from the Zelda series. I mean, it doesn't have the mass appeal of a Mario or a Smash Bros. The Zelda games are really games just for their fans. Not many others are willing to pick up a hardcore single player game like Zelda. Mario is just so easy to pick up and play and you decide whether you play for 2 minutes or 2 hours; Zelda games make you commit, almost. And that's fine.
A Super Mario Bros. 4 for Wii U would guarantee great launch sales, but they've got to do something different. Plus, a co-op 3D Mario would sell like hot cakes. I'm tellin' ya, guys!
Honestly, here's my sentiment: let NSMB2 be repetitive and retro for older fans, or anyone really. Revive the original 2D series in the form of a Super Mario Bros 4, and let that be creative and innovative for the 2D aspect. I know in my heart that Super Mario Wii U (3D) will be innovative just like Galaxy and 64 and sort of like Sunshine. It'll have bigger worlds to explore because Wii U can handle it. And I want M&L co-op for 3D Mario Wii U. It's what I've always wanted; to play Super Mario with a friend in a 3D space, adventuring together. The Wii U's controller is perfect for it, it'll bring in lots of purchases (because co-op is a huge seller, look at NSMBWii), and most importantly it will be innovative like Mario once was.
@aaronsullivan The Wii U game is supposed to be based somehow on the New Super demo from E3 '11, but I don't think Nintendo would release two games from the same series in the same year. With recent rumors of Nintendo's purchasing Supermario4.com in anticipation of a SMB4 game leaves me hopeful. Also, there are 2 teams that work on the core Mario games, one that works on the 3D ones since Galaxy (which is the Tokyo or Kyoto team I believe), and the 2D team (which I believe is EAD) since New Super DS. The 3D team is very imaginative. The 2D team plays it extremely safe and are the ones responsible for such unoriginal material lately.
@rosebud Man, Mario games are for all ages, doesn't matter how old or young you are. They're just plain fun. Honestly, Mario is an enduring icon and I can see him lasting with this kind of popularity (should Nintendo keep innovating with him and keep him from franchise fatigue) for well over another 30 years.
@Janett What does that even mean? How is it just like 3D Land? It's a 2D sidescroller. 3D Land is a 3D game. Just because they have something to do with the Tanooki suit or raccoon leaf, that doesn't mean they're the same. Also, you have to understand, 2D platformers don't take as much time as 3D games, especially since LM2 is a 3D action-adventure game. Totally different developments cycles. In addition to that, you need to have patience. Would you like a rushed game, or a polished, content-rich game?
@TimboBaggins I completely agree with you. SM64 and SMS were good games in their own right, and I could have fun playing them, but I feel like I only really started to enjoy Mario in 3D with the Galaxy games. They are seriously amazing games, they were the games that felt like Mario had actually transitioned to 3D.
Also, I agree with Mike1. Mario released a single core Mario game every, perhaps, 6 or 7 years? No. That's disgusting. I don't stand for that. I don't mind all the Mario games, unless it's stopping Nintendo from being creative and reinventing Mario each time a new game releases. Besides, Zelda fans SHOULD NOT be talking. They were friggin' spoiled for Zelda's 25th anniversary and Mario fans got nothing. Let us have our fun.
I sincerely hope they do something new and exciting for NSMB2. For the love of God, anything. Maybe some Wario Land-style 'jumping back n forth' action. Anything. I'm so tired of the New Super series, and this is coming from arguably one of the biggest Mario fans ever. I hope Super Mario 4 does something cool and exciting, and had an aesthetic more reminiscent of the classic titles. Please Nintendo, save Mario from falling into monotony. Also, stop all these spin-offs. That's enough. This game needs to have co-op for it to sell as well as New Super Mario Wii, I can guarantee. ALSO, co-op 3D Mario Wii U!
@Jamouse Reggie Fils-Aime a giant slab of meaty goodness, you leave him alone. If we have a Nintendo Direct, I can guarantee his chin will be 10 times shinier than your rough, gruff chins.
But seriously, Reggie's coo'. Want some news on Paper Mario 3DS.
I think it's possible to say that, if you knew me personally, I am the biggest Super Mario fan for miles and miles. And yet, I am incredibly unimpressed with this news, which is a difficult feat because I am excited by all Super Mario news. I hated the New Super Mario Bros Mii demo. And, frankly, I'm tired of the New Super series. I hope SMB4 is real and changes things up. Besides, we have a 2D Mario in the works for 3DS. Why would they make 2 at the same time, unless they were doing some sort of cool connectivity thing (which I doubt)?
I honestly believe a game changer will please the crowds more than a game that tries to please the crowds and doesn't innovate. A expansive, deep, huge HD Super Mario 3D experience will do the trick. It needs to be as epic as Galaxy was when we first laid our trembling little hands on it, and it needs to have one important thing that will ensure the Wii U is used to its fullest capacity and see sales that rival NSMBWii: Mario & Luigi co-op. IT. WILL. WORK. Nintendo NEEDS to do this. People love HD games, people love co-op games, and people love Mario & Luigi. THIS WILL ENSURE THE WII U HAD A SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH THAT WILL SPAN AT LEAST 4 MONTHS OF GREAT SALES.
Also, Nintendo should set up more teams to deal with more of their franchises and should equally worry about the resurrection of Star Fox or F-Zero. That would be great.
Yes and No for me. I've had enough of all the spin-offs and could frankly not care less about them. The core series still, despite the high frequency as of late, still has retained its magic for me. Also, the 2D and 3D series seem to coincide well, and I tend to count them almost as separate franchises. If you take the frequency of just the 2D games or just the 3D games, you'd be better off, for you should understand that not every single 3D Mario fan is also a 2D Mario fan (and vice versa). Nintendo seems to be championing Mario, not using him as a free pass. Look at all these possibly dead mascots like Mega Man or Sonic or Crash Bandicoot or Pac Man. Mario basically fought against all of them and won: He is an enduring character. Sure, I could use maybe an additional year between releases of each game, but Mario is as special to me today as he was 10 years ago (which is really, really, REALLY damn special). Although, I would suggest changing it up a little; ex: if the next 2D platformer has an art style more akin to a Super Mario Bros 4 rather than a New Super title, we'll be good. Also, with Super Mario Wii U a little ways off (we probably won't see it at E3), they'll have more than enough time to work the same magic we saw at E3 2006 with Mario Galaxy.
Aaaallllsssoooo, seeing as how they just announced that they would make a new 2D Mario for the 3DS, this story is HIGHLY plausible. And I support their direction. And for anyone that says that Super Mario World isn't the original Super Mario Bros 4, that was its name in Japan. Super Mario World was the subtitle.
@StarDust Yes, oh my God. I have been saying this exact thing since 3D Land was announced because it looked, to me at least, as the New Super Mario of the 3D series. Thank you. Wow. I completely agree with you. Thank you for that, you have no idea.
My favorite in the series would have to be Super Mario Bros. It's Mario in his most basic form, and the grandfather of all future Mario games. My modern favorite would have to be Super Mario Galaxy. In my opinion, New Super is what kicked off the Renaissance, but Galaxy made it official and came out with guns blazing. Galaxy was what every other 3D Mario so far wasn't: Mario being Mario. It was the closest any 3D game had gotten to being a Mario game, and was thoroughly fun at it, too. Plus, its narrative and optional deeper story brought me to tears at one point (that story book is no joke, man). 3D Land seems to be going strong and carrying the Renaissance along. If they make Super Mario Bros 4, then it's official. But the one thing I'm truly waiting on is Super Mario Wii U: it seriously, seriously needs to have Mario & Luigi co-op, just like how 64 and Sunshine and Galaxy were going to have but didn't. Please let it be true, Nintendo. This is what I, and millions of others, have been waiting for.
Holy crap, that sounds awesome. Although, I would enjoy if they kept in line with canon and didn't ignore Super Mario World being the original SMB4, despite it only being known as that in Japan. If they are doing this, however, then more power to them. All I know is that I am quite sick and tired of the NSMB art direction and all, and just want a proper, numbered 2D sequel. With co-op please!
Really? Really? A five year old game that was prettied up a bit won against Super Mario 3D Land? Seriously? BAFTA loses all actual integrity and validity in my book. They're clearly Nintendo haters and can't stand a good game when they see one. Granted, Portal 2 is great and I've spent countless hours with my buddy playing it. I could understand that, since Zelda (although really, really awesome) wouldn't win the creative award. But Mario's latest VS. Peggle... HD? No.
Hey, thanks for answering my question guys! That was pretty awesome, haha. In my opinion, playable characters could be a surprise. Koizumi stated in an interview with the site that he 'looks forward to us finding out'. So maybe we have a surprise or two in store. Luigi as a playable character is given, since everyone wanted him in 64 and then they were all so happy he was in Galaxy 1 and 2. Wario or Toad at least could possibly be playable. A slight possibility, nonetheless. I hope that's true though. I'd love to play either of them in 3D space (not counting Mario 64 DS, or Wario World).
I'm going insane waiting for this game. Give me already, Nintendo! Jeez!! I love the desert areas. They look so open and adventurous. This is 3D Mario game I've been waiting for: a journey throughout the Mushroom Kingdom. Not jumping through paintings or graffiti or some crap. Admittedly, Galaxy and Galaxy 2 were nice, but just not really what I was hoping for. I know Luigi will be playable, I just hope Toad or Wario can be, too. Koizumi made it seem like they had a surprise in the playable characters department. I also find the run button to be tantalizing, don't really know why. Plus, that SMB remix? Glorious. Is it November yet...
@sohail What do you mean by played? As far as controls go, it can be a bit awkward using the DS' D-pad or the touch screen. But, the 3DS' analog nub controls very well, giving it a perfect score for me. You'll feel right at home using the circle pad. The B-button represents punching and kicking like in the original. Everyone has a triple jump. Mario is the only one that can wall kick, while the others have special abilities. There's also a run button, due to the D-pad's use on the original DS. But I enjoy holding the run button a lot, it gives it a more retro feel. If you have a 3DS, I absolutely recommend you pick it up. It's a great precursor to Super Mario 3D Land.
Dear Nintendolife, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PUBLISH THAT ARTICLE OF THE HANDS-ON NAO. PLEEEEASR. ILL RELOAD THE PAGE LIKE A MILLION TIMES AND GIVE YOU AS MANY HITS AS YOU COULD POSSIBLY WANT. Also, answering the following would he nice: Is level 1-1 based near Princess Peach's Castle like in the trailer? Does Mario feel floatier compared to other 3D Marios? Can the regular long jump be performed alongside the new somersault long jump?
@WaveBoy Yeah, there is a run button. It makes Mario dash a lot faster, giving it a more retro feel. Which isn't a bad thing at all, as the other 3D Marios have been awesome but weren't able to really capture the feel of the 2D games and bring it into a 3D space. That's one of the most enticing things about 3D Land. November can not come soon enough.
7 levels for each world, 8 worlds in all: 56 levels. Then there's the matter of secret levels (come ooon, you know they'll be there), so I'm assuming there will be a 9th world for secrets. It that's the case, then there will be 63 levels. Can anyone say 'psyched out of my mind'? I can't wait to see how the "Capture the Flag" level works. Btw, I think the first level will take place in or at Peach's Castle. There's a part in the trailer that shows the map selection of the first level, and Peach's Castle is on the level preview. Now, if they'd just announce some new playable characters, then I'll die young and happy.
As long as it has a world map like Super Mario World or New Super Mario Bros Wii, I'm happy. I would very much like to see a system implemented where you revisit each level for a different purpose and some things are changed around a bit each time to open up new paths. That's probably not gonna happen but a gamer can dream. As for playable characters; Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Wario. I mean, why not. Wario. I'd love to see his fat a$$ waddle through the levels in 3D. If not Wario, then please put in Peach. This game is gonna be killer even if most of that stuff doesn't happen.
As for the complaints about it being slow, there's a run button like Mario 64 DS [X,Y]. As for the complaints about floaty level design, SM64 had nothing but levels floating all over the place. Everything floated. 2D games had floaty level design as well. Besides, most levels I've seen don't float. They rise high above the ground into the clouds.
It's really an awesome logo. I hope this is the final version. Also, I'm calling it: the box art will be tilted on its side like the logo. Can not wait. I thimk'll it be the 3DS' killer app.
Guys, the long jump and backflip are both still in this game. The only thing they removed is the triple jump to give it a more classic feel. The long jump is done when walking I believe and the forward somersault jump is done when running (yes, btw, X and Y are the run buttons, hallelujah! and he runs as fast or faster than in Galaxy) I've seen it in videos and played a demo post E3. It feels amazing and polished. The backflip is tweaked as well, and is done by charging power in your legs and THEN jumping. You won't move backwards, he'll just do a backflip in place so you can move Mario wherever you want. It's been made to feel like the power squat jump in Super Mario Bros. 2. Yes, I'm a huge effing Mario nerd. Hope this cleared things up.

Re: Castlevania: Mirror of Fate "Definitely Not Metroidvania"
Actually I'm kind of excited for this. A return to the series' roots is rather welcomed after having played the slew of Metroidvania titles on the DS. And if the DS' library is any indication, we'll likely see at least another Castlevania on the 3DS that will likely be (since Lords of Shadow 2 will be Mercury Steams' last Castlevania) in the vain of the Metroidvanias that many fans seem to enjoy so much.

P.S. SUPER MARIO WII U Co-Op MUST HAPPEN!
Re: Nintendo Buys Supermario4.com Web Domain
Aaaallllsssoooo, seeing as how they just announced that they would make a new 2D Mario for the 3DS, this story is HIGHLY plausible. And I support their direction. And for anyone that says that Super Mario World isn't the original Super Mario Bros 4, that was its name in Japan. Super Mario World was the subtitle.
Re: Feature: The Super Mario Renaissance
@StarDust Yes, oh my God. I have been saying this exact thing since 3D Land was announced because it looked, to me at least, as the New Super Mario of the 3D series. Thank you. Wow. I completely agree with you. Thank you for that, you have no idea.
Re: Feature: The Super Mario Renaissance
Re: Nintendo Buys Supermario4.com Web Domain
Holy crap, that sounds awesome. Although, I would enjoy if they kept in line with canon and didn't ignore Super Mario World being the original SMB4, despite it only being known as that in Japan. If they are doing this, however, then more power to them. All I know is that I am quite sick and tired of the NSMB art direction and all, and just want a proper, numbered 2D sequel. With co-op please!
Re: Nintendo Leaves BAFTA Empty-Handed
Really? Peggle... HD? No.
Re: Mario Tennis Opens Up with New Gameplay Video
An RPG mode would so work. You can use your Mii for it. Please Camelot, bring it back just one more time... Just one more time...
Re: FAQ: Your Super Mario 3D Land Questions
Re: Two More Super Mario 3D Land Trailers for You
I'm going insane waiting for this game.
Re: Review: Super Mario 64 DS (DS)
Re: New Super Mario 3D Land Artwork to Gaze At
Dear Nintendolife, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PUBLISH THAT ARTICLE OF THE HANDS-ON NAO.
Re: More Super Mario 3D Land Screenshots Warp Into View
Re: Koizumi Talks Super Mario 3D Hub, Caps and Replay Value
As long as it has a world map like Super Mario World or New Super Mario Bros Wii, I'm happy. I would very much like to see a system implemented where you revisit each level for a different purpose and some things are changed around a bit each time to open up new paths. That's probably not gonna happen but a gamer can dream. As for playable characters; Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Wario. I mean, why not. Wario. I'd love to see his fat a$$ waddle through the levels in 3D. If not Wario, then please put in Peach. This game is gonna be killer even if most of that stuff doesn't happen.
Re: Super Mario 3D Land's Logo Still Has a Raccoon Tail
As for the complaints about it being slow, there's a run button like Mario 64 DS [X,Y]. As for the complaints about floaty level design, SM64 had nothing but levels floating all over the place. Everything floated. 2D games had floaty level design as well. Besides, most levels I've seen don't float. They rise high above the ground into the clouds.
Re: Super Mario 3D Land's Logo Still Has a Raccoon Tail
It's really an awesome logo. I hope this is the final version. Also, I'm calling it: the box art will be tilted on its side like the logo. Can not wait. I thimk'll it be the 3DS' killer app.
Re: Preview: Super Mario (3DS)
