Re: Review: Burning Fight (Virtual Console / Neo Geo)

No comments! I'll admit that I've got a major soft spot for this game. Certainly, "the gameplay is just what you’d expect from this kind of game", but it's done pretty well if you ask me. I wouldn't recommend that you download it before SoR or Final Fight...but worth a go nevertheless. I would say that though: I'm a sucker for the patented Neo Geo MASSIVE CHUNKY MEGA SPRITES.

Re: ChuChu Rocket!

Agree with the above posts. Hell, I could port this to WiiWare in my lunch hour!

Re: Review: Max & the Magic Marker (WiiWare)

@RobotLove

When I mentioned it was 'dismayingly repetitive', it wasn't to say how tedious the game might be, but rather how unambitous it is. It appears that the developers were far too happy to repeat the same four ideas over and over - I'm sure you'll agree that besides making floats, bridges, stairs and umbrellas, there isn't that much you need to doodle. It just should have been so much more than it is, even if memory is tight on WiiWare. Wouldn't really agree that it's unique either, as Drawn To Life largely did this same sort of thing a few years back.

It might seem a bit mean-spirited of me to put the boot in - especially considering how polished it is by the standards of WiiWare - but to me it isn't all that exciting.

Re: Review: Max & the Magic Marker (WiiWare)

Roo

Disagree.

Max & the Magic Marker isn't really up to that much. Don't get me wrong; it's definitely playable, but at the same time it's dismayingly repetitive and not nearly as revolutionary or intelligent as it thinks it is. I just expected a bit more after reading the previews. Still, there are worse prospects on WiiWare.

Despite it's techincal ingenuity and admirable presentation, a 5/10 would have been fairer if you ask me.

Re: Max & the Magic Marker

Roo

Downloaded it last night, and after about two hours of play, I can say that I'm not massively impressed. The platforming isn't all that exciting, and the scenarios in which they let you use the marker pen are quite samey. I can't help but think this is a game that's a couple of years late. Maybe I've been spoiled by Scribblenauts - and even Drawn To Life - on DS, but even without having played those I'd have said Magic Marker is a bit short on new ideas...

Re: Review: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (WiiWare)

Roo

What's with the argument about block size? Doesn't everyone who's interested in WiiWare have the SD Card Channel by now? It might have been a big deal in 2007 - but not today.

Also, no one has ever thought these games are educational. No one is ever going to think these games are educational. Pheonix Wright will never become the preeminent case study of the judicial system works, and as everyone almost certainly knows that, why did you waste time typing about the educational merit of the game?

Re: Review: Neo Turf Masters (Virtual Console / Neo Geo)

Roo

I left a comment here years ago illustrating how much I like this game. Clearly, that's been deleted - cheeky! - but I still feel the same way about Neo Turf Masters. Simply put, it's great. A worthy download for 900 points. Just to add: you've got to love SNK's MASSIVE SPRITES...the character models wouldn't look out of place in a WWE game.

Re: Feature: For Your Consideration - Little King's Story

Roo

I wanted to like this game so much, but it is very hard to ignore the imprecise controls and frustrating camera that you're lumped with throughout the game. Yes, LKS is imaginative, and it's exciting...but moreso than anything else, it's deeply annoying.

Re: Review: Axelay (SNES)

Roo

Well, they need to go back. It must be on the agenda - Axelay will come out in Europe at some point, surely.

Re: USA VC Update: Super Punch-Out!!

Roo

"Strangely enough, there are no new C64 or Arcade games today. Get on the ball, Nintendo!"

No! More SNES games, please! I don't want any of Namco's foosty old rubbish!

Re: Review: Space Invaders: The Original Game (SNES)

Roo

Eh? It's nothing like saying that - from what I've heard about it, SIGE is an expansion far beyond the game reviewed here.

I wouldn't bother with this either, as its been emulated on numerous websites over the years under different guises. You're bound to find it somewhere for free.

Re: World Games

Roo

This is on the cover of my copy of Issue 200 of EDGE. Absolutely gutted, I am.

Re: Review: Bubble Bobble (NES)

Roo

Another game I didn't know was on VC 'til now.

"...certainly one of the better games from the NES console." Can't disagree with that.

Re: Review: California Games (C64)

Roo

Always a favourite when I was wee - though why it clocks in at a massive 62 blocks is a mystery to me. That's the size of F-Zero and Punch-Out!

Despite that point, it's fun for a nostalgic burst, but like Golden Axe: not as good as you remember.

Re: Review: Dig Dug (NES)

Roo

I hadn't a clue that this was on Virtual Console! I've always had a soft spot for Dig Dug. The review isn't wrong when it emphasies the lack of variety, but nonetheless what is on offer for 500 points is good enough.

Good review.

Re: Review: Kirby's Adventure (NES)

Roo

Not at all, Bass X0. This is by-the-numbers 2D platforming; the second entry into a series that has continously failed to set the gaming world alight. Graphics are good, but the abilities are unimaginative and make the game too easy to be much fun. It makes for passble enjoyment, but Kirby's Adventure (and the rest of the post-Dream Land games, for that matter) is Nintendo's autopilot platformer. Time to rub that emotional residue off of those rose-tinted glasses.

Re: Review: Donkey Kong 3 (NES)

Roo

I was playing this in the pub last night! It wasn't too bad actually, but I wouldn't be up for paying £3.50 for a download when 30p proved to suffice in seeing everything on offer here.

Re: Review: F-Zero (SNES)

Roo

Love that soundtrack! This is absolutely brilliant - though F-Zero X is superior. Still, both are certainly worth downloading.
